His answer was that he was in a hotel on one occasion and as he walked through one of its corridors he heard voices coming from one of the rooms. My response to the same question put to me about JOURNEY TO COLONUS is similar. I think its germ lay in once traveling through the night on a Greyhound or Trailways bus and seeing an old man. He was traveling alone as I was. He was African-American. He was obviously of very modest means as most people are who travel far by bus. I don't remember his physical features except in one respect: I was struck by the easy and self-composed dignity of his person. I did not speak to him and he did not speak to me but I could easily imagine in him someone who'd lived through much, suffered much and knew much. (less)
