Christopher Smith was born on the blood-red clay of North Alabama and raised on the concrete sprawl of South Jersey. He has a master’s degree in English from Auburn University, where he met his future wife, Kate, at the college newspaper. Smith lives in Clarksville, Tenn., and works as an editor at The Tennessean in Nashville. This is his debut novel.

If you always wait for inspiration, you won't do it nearly as often as you'd like. You have to make it part of your schedule. To get inspired to write, I like to I like to clear my mind by getting away from my email and social media and TV and all the other intrusions. All it takes is 15 minutes by myself doing laundry or unloading the dishwasher, or maybe mowing the lawn or wandering in the yard. This keeps the body busy and lets the mind wander in silence. Usually it's enough to give me the head space to get creative. (less)
