As someone who grew up in the early 90's, reading books like Goosebumps, Choose Your Own Adventure, or Unreal (the absurd Australian anthology), and watching movies like Little Monsters, The Neverending Story, The Witches, Stay Tuned, and Drop Dead F As someone who grew up in the early 90's, reading books like Goosebumps, Choose Your Own Adventure, or Unreal (the absurd Australian anthology), and watching movies like Little Monsters, The Neverending Story, The Witches, Stay Tuned, and Drop Dead Fred, reading Lizard Music felt shockingly familiar for me, because it seems to almost exist as some sort of tonal blueprint for the majority of children's fantasy media that was produced between 1985 and 1995 (the first decade of my existence). This book is from 1976 so it was released far before the majority of these referenced works. I don't read as much as a lot of bookworms, but to my knowledge, this could be perceived as a work that is proto, thus making it somewhat "biblical" when it comes to that specific era of children's fantasy.

Lizard Music is a quick and enjoyable read at 136 pages with rather large print. It gets the inner dialogue of what it feels like to think and speak like an 11-year-old boy correct, and that aspect alone is endlessly amusing. Beyond that, it is the epitome of a book that lets its creative juice flow freely - there are literally no rules followed, and the world it creates feels like it genuinely comes from the mind of a child. You never really know which parts of the book are "real" or what is happening in the boy's imagination, but the seamless blend of possibility between the two works fantastically. The creativity progressively gets wilder as you get deeper into the story and the characters make their way further and further from the reality we know.

I hadn't heard of this book, but when I saw that unpredictable filmmaker Benny Safdie (one of the most exciting film directors currently working) had chosen this as his next project (starring Dwayne Johnson as The Chicken Man), my interest was immediately piqued. It has been my vocal opinion that American media has had a serious absence of this sort of magical, whimsical, often somewhat spooky children's fantasy stuff since the late 90's, and a new wave of inspired projects such as this could be a lot more than just refreshing. Considering my debut fiction novel Popping Cherries is something that I've always described as, "...like a long, perverted Goosebumps book", this was a very important read for me and my personal trajectory, as many parts of it felt directly spiritually connected to much of my own writing.

While the conclusion feels somewhat simple and sudden, I'm not really sure there would be any better ways to end this story. Reading this for the first time as a 40-year-old man, I personally desire a bit more of a conclusive aftermath in reality, but of course, I must accept that this book was written half a century ago for kids, not for 40-year-old men in the internet age. When it comes down to it, it's pretty perfect for being exactly what it is. I couldn't name any flaws if you asked me. I am very curious to see what maestro Benny Safdie does with the film adaptation, and I am curious to read a bit more Pinkwater. ...more

One of the most impressive parts about American Pastoral, overall, is how convincingly it remains impartial or neutralist throughout its entire length. It is an immensely "political" book, without ever leaning too hard into real-life political history - rather it focuses on a family and how opposing political views have the potential to tear a family apart in ways one could hardly imagine. Above all else, it is an impressive character study, and an immensely effective drama. As someone who is left-leaning myself, I found it interesting how when the story focused on what was going on with the anti-capitalist revolutionary daughter it got absolutely gripping, but whenever it focused on the values or history of the conservative father, the book became almost punishing with its banality for extensive periods of time. Doing 30+ pages about how to make leather gloves in great detail because that's what the family lineage focused on...like, nobody needs to read that unless you are trying to make leather gloves the old fashioned way for a living in reality - but, I wonder if that was the whole point of segments like that. Like, was this a quiet but conscious slam on conservative values from the author, or is it more so a reflection of my own "progressive" values and interests, or my general affinity for all the things that make god-fearing people perceive me as a sinner? Either way, the intrigue behind this question is a great representation of what makes this book so impressive and complex.

There are no good guys in this book. Everyone is too real and too complex to be "good". Everyone is a critic of everyone else, and everyone else's lifestyle, and you feel for everyone to an extent, and you also see everyone as pathetic in different ways. And, the whole time you're thinking, could this happen to me when I finally decide to have children? Will this happen to me when my children who are now babies grow up? It's quite scary. The level of powerlessness that all parents could potentially face is captured in a frighteningly believable and riveting way. And, the way that when something like this happens, there seems to be no right answer, and no correct solution. It's brutal.

Admittedly, though I mostly enjoyed the entire book, I'm not sure what the final segment of the book was supposed to be saying. The ending felt rather inconclusive to me. And, after so many riveting character progressions, and so many story arcs I wanted to see go further, I was a bit underwhelmed with the conclusion. A top of that, I found the book was quite a bit longer than it needed to be. I could have done without so many long-winded segments that seemed to focus on one simple thing for 25 pages or so. I feel like this book could have been even more hard-hitting and closer to flawless as a 300-350 page novel, but beneath this two criticisms, albeit them being pretty big ones, this book would otherwise be a gripping masterpiece.

Through the earliest segments of the book, I was somewhat shocked by how many parallels there seemed to be between the current political state in America right now in 2025, in contrast to 1997 when this book was written, and I was entirely oblivious to what was going on, as a 12 year old boy who only cared about Korn, Playstation, and wondering when I would get my dick sucked for the first time. It is pretty shocking to read this as someone who is my age (40 years old) and come to terms with the fact that a lot of shit apparently never really changes when it comes to the political plane in a democratic nation. Considering that this book so effectively spotlights both merit and utter failure on each side of the coin, I would highly recommend that anyone with the patience or interest give it a whirl. This was my first time reading anything by Philip Roth, and though I'm not sure I will be diving into another book of his any time soon, I am pretty blown away by him as a writer - extremely dynamic, and his ability to open such expansive umbrellas with such different, complex viewpoints is astonishing. THE CRYING OF LOT 49 came as the most recommended of his works, by far. At a succinct 126 pages, I figured it would be a quick jolt of easy, quirky reading... boy, was I fucking wrong.

Much like my experiences attempting to read NEUROMANCER, or Philip K. Dick's VALIS, nearly the entire book left me feeling like "What in the FUCK is he blabbing on about?" Perhaps there is some form of narrative buried in this writing somewhere, but it is beyond difficult to find in the mess. About halfway through the book, I decided to read the back of the book one more time, and it is absolutely one of those cases where I was like "THAT'S what's happening in this book? I have seen zero signs of ANY of that". I figured maybe that would change by the time I got all the way through it, but I will say...barely. Only in the final 30-40 pages did I start to see a blurry semblance of what the synopsis attempted to lay out. It reminded me quite a lot of the ultimate case of this in film format, which in my experience would be Peter Greenaway's PROSPERO'S BOOKS - though in that case I was able to find literally ZERO PERCENT of the synopsis within the film. There was also a strange parallel in there since TRISTERO was one of the primary names repeated in this book - for a second amidst my confused brain scrambling, I began to wonder if they were somehow connected.

Much of the praise for this book refers to it as golden "comedy", but outside of the character names, I barely found a speck of humor throughout the entire thing. Where was it hiding? With character names like Diocletian Blobb, Mike Fallopian, Mucho Maas, Randolph Driblette, Genghis Cohen, and...Doctor Hilarius.... you would think there would be more to laugh at, but I really couldn't see it. The majority of the book felt like reading the referential historical info paragraphs thrown in at the bottom of a lot of non-fiction books to clarify things, only in this case, they were not connected to anything at all, and since it's fiction, and the majority of it is all, I'm assuming, false history, none of it sticks, or, even manages to be remotely entertaining. On the subject of characters, I don't think there was a single character in this entire book that felt at all fleshed-out to me - they literally all felt like they were meant to be more of an archetype, though even from an archetypal standpoint, they still felt blurry and unrealized.

The entire book certainly did feel like an intended challenge for the mind. And I must credit the author for having an extremely unique voice, and approach, but I cannot for the life of me determine why anyone would want to write a book like this, or how anyone could find reading it enjoyable. While I had to abandon the undecipherable Neuromancer about 2/3 of the way through, I did manage to get all the way through this one. I will say that much of the final chapter was the closest thing to being memorable or enjoyable in the book, as is the case with many books I've read and only partially enjoyed. I do think that in the case of Inherent Vice, it was Paul Thomas Anderson's additional character developing and casting choices which helped mold that into a more digestible (though still extremely challenging) experience. I am going to give Dick's VALIS another try, sooner or later, as his A SCANNER DARKLY has since become one of my all-time favorite books. On that note, The Crying of Lot 49 seemed to turn into some sort of nightmarish drug tale at the tail end of the story, but I didn't know where it came from or how it related to the rest of the story, so it wasn't as effective as I think it should have been. As far as batshit crazy drug stories, A SCANNER DARKLY and especially NAKED LUNCH are the maniacal ones that have spoken to me deeply. You want funny? A SCANNER DARKLY is truly hilarious. Deeply, deeply funny. And, there's a narrative. Now NAKED LUNCH...that's closer to The Crying of Lot 49, but the absurd concepts awoke a part of my brain that had never been activated before. LOT 49 did not - it was honestly a slog, all the way through.

"It was full of words ending in e's, s's that looked like f's, capitalized nouns, y's where i's should have been. 'I can't read this,' Oedipa said.

I wonder if this quote was actually Pynchon being self-aware that what he was writing was annoying as fuck. Maybe that was the whole point. Maybe he was a troll. Most trolls speak to me, though. This did not. ...more

I'm just so happy that Britney was able to get to the point in her life where she was able to recognize, write, and release this. It must feel like such a massive weight lifted off of her shoulders, which also must correlate fittingly and fantastically with the defeat of her atrocious conservatorship.

The first part of this book showcases how through all of Britney's breakthrough years, she was still just a naive child who loved to sing and dance, going through the motions without actually having a single adult thought about what she should be looking out for, as everyone continued to take advantage of her situation and control every aspect of her life and career. This was fascinating to observe.
The second part showcases how the breakup with Justin Timberlake was the first thing that truly opened her eyes and transformed her into an adult, with actual feelings and opinions - after that, all of a sudden she wanted to start making her own decisions in life for the first time, all seemingly stemming from her first real bout with heartbreak, pain, and deceit committed by someone other than her own family. This was also fascinating to observe.
Finally, the rest of the book is where the psychological horror takes over. As if out of nowhere, Britney becomes a literal prisoner within her own world, unable to make any decisions for herself. A grown-ass woman, who can't go to the bathroom without being monitored, for WELL OVER A DECADE. Her children...taken away from her. Her dad telling her "I AM BRITNEY SPEARS NOW".
It's astonishing accepting how much of an absolute hell her world has been, right under our noses, for like 15 years. I can't believe that anyone was able to get away with it - taking the most successful musician in the world, an innocent angel, and legally trapping her in a scenario where they fully took advantage of her fame and fortune while she sat there being mentally and spiritually drained on the most immense level. It's absolutely terrible.

The book is written at a "grade school reading level". It's an easy, sometimes "dumb" read, but this isn't about prose. It's about having your eyes opened to what's potentially happening with cherished icons, and innocent women, right under our noses. I just hope that this book helps to open many eyes, and that Britney's story helps assure this never happens again. I have been a Britney lover my entire life, since her breakthrough, and this was honestly shocking to read.

As fa I am generally drawn to fiction but something about Julia Fox's "controversial" rise and the energy I picked up on through her performance in Uncut Gems and, well, in her eyes in every single photograph, made want to give her bio book a chance. As far as I can recall, this is the only biography I've ever read, and, well, it reads just like a lot of my favorite fiction does, so obviously I loved it.

Julia's writing is honey-smooth, and her honesty is the kind that deserves worship. We, as a society have praised writers who "create" blunt, controversial "characters" (like Chuck Pahlaniuk or Charles Bukowski), when everyone knows those characters are just reflections of the writers. Well, in this case, Julia Fox willingly exploits many dark corners of her mind, simultaneously humanizing and, apparently for some people, demonizing herself, for our entertainment. Julia is exactly what we need more of "in celebrity", unrestrained realness approaching levels of martyrdom. There is a reason her story is fascinating - it's because she's not afraid to be just one thing, follow just one path, or be anything other than herself, and her book itself is just furthering that concept.

Though the actual chronology of the book feels what I would imagine is pretty typical for biographies, it is to no detriment. From the early chapters reveling in a chaotic childhood between Italy and New York City, through the heroin-drenched segments so drugged out they randomly meander to other seemingly random places like Louisiana, the book is endlessly entertaining on a colossal level. Fox's life has very clearly been a rollercoaster from start to finish, one which she has ridden with her arms up, screaming. Fearless, and fucking.

While I did feel that the last couple chapters felt more like blurted blog entries as they covered events that seemed to have occurred very recently before the book was written, it wasn't enough to take away from my 5 star review. The book closes on the Kanye West experience, which was clearly the last major thing that happened with Julia in the press before she announced she would be putting out a book, and though it's even more matter of fact than most of the prior material, it's still not a bad way to close. It's a finale of sorts in its own right, and, for all we know, this is just Julia's FIRST biography. It's a fitting ending for now, but in a way, this is also a beginning. The rest of the book was written with enough time to reflect on the details that matter, giving the majority of the book a sort of romantic nostalgia to go along with all of its drama and filth.

Julia knows she's a little bit of a monster and always has been, but she's not afraid to show you. Never a bad person, but always ready to advance or do the most daring thing she can. No risk, no reward. It's a way of life and Julia is currently culture's mascot. For some people, it works better than others, and for Julia it's worked very well. It's an enchanting ride to take.
