Introductions

10/3/2016
Hi folks, I am David Day, a new author, and wanted to introduce myself. I have been a fan of fantasy since I read, The Nine Princes of Amber, by Roger Zelazny so many years ago. My first work is The Punished. Well, truth be told, it is not my first written, but the first I had the urge to publish.

I have had far too many jobs: theater projectionist, pizza maker, beach store sales, research assistant, used car sales man, ecologist, environmental consultant, physician, even land lord. However, the important ones, the professions that influenced my book were ecologist and physician.

In ecology nothing is static. It is the biological equivalent of Heraclitis’s philosophy that change is fundamental and it is impossible to ever step in the same river twice. What would happen if magic had the same challenge? In ecology, the best example is the ongoing battle between insects and plants. It has produced the beautiful blooms of orchids and the deadly poisons of curare, mustard too.

As a physician I have been witness to far more suffering than I would have imagined when I began my training. I know it seems naïve and perhaps I was. Yet, it is that recognition of suffering, so much of which we can neither resolve nor hide, that became the punished in my tale.

The third inspiration was the importance of friends. Not once have I accomplished something alone (yes I took my boards alone). But even in medicine, I could not have accomplished my studies alone. I helped friends and they helped me. In ecology and consulting I usually had a partner. It is dangerous to be in the middle of nowhere alone. A simple ankle sprain, or your car sinking to the axle in an unseen clay flat, can ruin your day. Right about that time, it is good to have a friend nearby, the company frequently helps too.

Thank you for taking a read of my introduction, and hopefully of my book, The Punished. Please post a review both here and at Amazon if you enjoyed my tale. I feel a touch guilty asking you for such effort (I do acknowledge the effort). Yet I am learning that many judge a book based on the number of reviews. I rarely look at them when I buy a book so this is a recent revelation to me. Thank you for listening, I wish you well.
