J.F. Monroe, your everyday human with a not-so-everyday imagination, decided reality wasn't cutting it and built her own alternate universe to live in. The "Legacy of the Four" trilogy is her official invitation for readers to join her in this wild adventure—and with Book 3, she's bringing the story home.

A lifelong lover of all things fantasy, Monroe finds inspiration in stories that captivate with unforgettable characters and powerful redemption arcs. Influenced by works like "The Lord of the Rings," "The Hunger Games," and "Harry Potter," she's also drawn to the cinematic genius of Christopher Nolan and will watch anything with his name on it. She believes the heart of every story lies in its characters—their struggles, growth, and triump ...more

They briefly introduced the Four Horsemen, and I thought, 'Wouldn’t it be cool to read a book about them?' I hadn’t seen too many fantasy books exploring the Horsemen in depth, and I really loved the concept. Funny enough, that thought turned into me writing it as a screenplay, and that’s where the characters first started to come alive.

When mixing the Four Horsemen with sprinkles of Greek mythology, set in a world where humans undergo trials to become vessels for the Horsemen in the event of war breaking out amongst the lands—I thought it would be fitting to make it an epic, wild, and unhinged screenplay. I mean, who wouldn’t want to potentially one day see Horsemen battling angels and demons on screen, right?

Little did I know that my characters and world would grow far beyond the confines of a 90-page screenplay. Each character slowly began taking on a life of their own, refusing to be condensed or cut short. And so, that screenplay evolved into something more—a 400+ page novel and the first of a three-part series. Who knew?!

If you ever find yourself reading my book, you might catch some 'screenplay-esque' writing in the chapters—I tend to see everything play out cinematically in my mind and try to capture that on the page. It’s part of my process, and I’m so excited to share it with you.(less)

How I Accidentally Created a Fantasy Romance Trilogy: The Four Horsemen Reimagined as Guardians

From maternity leave to mythology—how one misread Bible verse sparked a world where the Four Horsemen protect instead of destroy.

It all started seven-ish years ago, during maternity leave with my son. Picture this: sleep-deprived, coffee in hand, rocking a newborn while half-watching a TV show that happened to reference the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But this version had a twist.
