I've visited him and family several times near Munich, but no one talks about those years. Even his grandchildren know very little, except his sacrifice of losing a leg in the battle, which sent him home; thus undoubtedly saving his life. As one of the many 'good' Germans, was he forced to join the Nazi party, or forced into the Wehrmacht without joining? What was their life like before and after the war? How did the battle change him? Understandably, he wants to keep that door closed, but I've wanted to write his story, adding fictionalized characters.(less)

However, the story dragged on with tiresome details about each main character, Katherine and Tess.

I enjoyed this book, and really liked Jessica, the protagonist. I plan to read more
in the series. Of course, I fell in love with Luke, her sweet dog.

"I found the first half of this book to be more interesting. I loved the character of Edna and the complexity of her relationship with her husband. I felt like the second half spiraled a bit and got far fetched.

“...we often mistake love for fireworks - for drama and dysfunction. But real love is very quiet, very still. It's boring, if seen from the perspective of high drama. Love is deep and calm - and constant.”
