Rebranding, relaunching

logo no taglineDid you notice the difference?

When I first built this website, I was in a hurry. I had just started writing my first romance novel, and I was about to attend my first writers’ conference. I needed something, fast!

For the first and only time in my web development career, I used a theme straight out of the box, and customized it only enough to build in the display of all the bits and pieces I wanted it to contain.

Over the years, I would look at it periodically and think about rebuilding it. But...

Plottr, my latest writing tool

Plottr logoI’ve been writing professionally for a long time. I moved from working in engineering to freelancing as a technical writer in 1992. Over the years I’d developed a pretty strong process for writing non-fiction, and it included creating very detailed outlines.

Along comes 2013, and I decide to try my hand at writing a novel. Imagine my surprise when creating those well-developed outlines, doing that detailed plotting, shut down my ability to finish the book. It’s as if my brain would say, “oh, you...

Finally, travel again!

Is this the new normal? Have we made enough progress with vaccines and masks to allow us to be out and about with people again?

Entrata (Entrance, in Italian)My husband and I recently returned from a trip to Italy with some friends. We flew from Calgary to Montreal where we met up with the other couple who had driven across the border from Upstate New York. And then we flew together from Montreal to Rome.

At the time of our departure, Canadian airlines still required passengers to wear masks on board the plane except when ac...

Goodbye, CaRWA.

Today I resigned from CaRWA, the Calgary Association of Romance Writers of America. I can no longer belong to an organization whose racist and homophobic actions contradict its professed values of diversity and inclusion. Before I continue, I want to apologize to the CaRWA members who are part of any marginalized community, or who write ...

Doorways into reading — and writing

I came across this article a few weeks ago, and it got me thinking: https://www.tor.com/2018/08/13/in-sea.... I can’t remember not reading. I do remember curling up in the kneehole of my grandmother’s vanity dresser with a book, and since it was such a small place I couldn’t have been more than three or four. I read ...

Websites for writers (and other folk)

Like a lot of authors, I have a day job: I run a web development company called Creative Implementations, and I build WordPress websites for writers. And other folk.

I’ve been asked a couple of times lately what I do for clients. This post gets a little detailed, so bear with me!

PSA: Protect your devices from phishing

I belong to several email loops. Every once in a while, one will see a flurry of posts that only contain a weird looking link. I don’t click on them, because I know without a shadow of a doubt that the person whose email apparently sent the message is not the person who intended to ...

Look, look, I’m in a podcast!

(Actually, I guess that should be Listen, listen!) On June 24, 2018 I participated in Sultry and Sweet Summer Reads, Calgary’s first romance reader festival: https://www.facebook.com/events/64528.... It was organized by a fellow member of CaRWA (Calgary Association of Romance Writers of America), M Jane Colette. I was there primarily to represent CaRWA, but I also ...

WordPress Technical Maintenance

If you have a self-hosted WordPress website (one not hosted at wordpress.com), it’s really important to keep it up to date. I’m not talking about adding new content. That’s important, of course, but even if you don’t add anything new for a while, your site won’t break. Think of adding new content like putting gas ...

PSA for WordPress site owners

For those of you who manage your own self-hosted WordPress websites: WordPress 4.9.6 is set to release today (Thursday), and the version number is misleading. WordPress 4.9.6 is much more than just a simple/minor maintenance release. There are brand new features in this release: GDPR tools, Gutenberg Nag screen, and even a massive bump in ...
