Years of ideas

This is my first blog.

I'm not quite sure what to say, really. I guess I'll just jump straight into it, and if I'm breaking any blog formatting or structuring 'rules' (if any) I apologize.

I've just self-published my first novel. It's a science-fiction mystery, and it took me three months to write. I know, that doesn't sound very promising. How can it be good if it only took three months to write? Well, truthfully, I'm not sure what people think of it yet, as it hasn't really been out there for that long, and I haven't received enough reviews to gauge levels of interest in it.

Despite it taking only three months to write, it was in editing for over two years. It transformed immensely over time, and if I'm being completely honest, I was only able to write the book in three months because I'd completely mapped the story and character arcs in my head over years and years, combining ideas and treatments I had for over ten separate stories. If you look at this way, then this story has been in development for around eight years.

It's a scary thing, when you have these ideas in your head for so long and then finally put them out there for the world to see. All that work, you expect to make something out of it. You form expectations in your head, imagine the most ideal, perfect scenario, and then hope it will play out like that.

Unfortunately, life doesn't always work like that, and not just with publishing, with pretty much everything. I'm starting to accept that, and my expectations with the launch of my book have become a bit more realistic.

Right now, my book is selling around 1-2 copies a day. Far from the million-copy best seller, but still, it's progress.

Despite what happens with it, I will continue to write the sequel, as it's something I genuinely love doing, and who knows... maybe one week the series will find an audience who enjoy the story, world and characters as much as I do.
