I've loved both books and science fiction from an early age so for me it was inevitable I began writing. My influences include Philip K Dick, Dan Simmons, Arthur C Clarke, Ursula Le Guin, Frank Herbert and so many more - storytellers and world-builders. But other, more unconventional sources inspire my writing too, such as anime, music and cult TV shows like the BBC classic Blake’s 7 and the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I enjoy creating complex characters and then putting them through it - I don't believe in characters getting an easy time. My first novel, Black Milk, was released in 2016 and I published my second, Delphine Descends, in 2019. I'm currently working on my next. ...more

Hi Gadlaw. Thanks for your question.

All writing is obviously subjective as to whether a reader will enjoy it or not. So, what one person may not find enjoyable, someone, somewhere certainly will.

I do think we've seen a surge recently in young female sci-fi writers who (like many writers) write about what they know – making their protagonists young and female.

I personally enjoy reading about all types of characters that take me out of myself and I don't necessarily need to relate to a character in order to enjoy reading about them. Sometimes, the best characters can be completely unlike ourselves.

But, like everything I read, the characters have to be multi-layered, and the writing and story has to captivate me. If it doesn't, then it has failed (in my opinion), regardless of the protagonist.

My latest book, Delphine Descends, features a female protagonist at different stages of her life and while I'm obviously not a woman, I really enjoyed writing this character.

It's important to say that, while my latest protagonist is a woman, my target audience for this book isn't (just) women – which may be the case with some of the books you've been thumbing.

It could also be the books you’re trying to read have bigger problems regarding the writing and the story.

I do think there are lots of great sci-fi books out there (modern and classic), so I'd encourage you to not give up on the genre. I think BookTube and other reviews are a great way to find out about the books that you might enjoy.

I hope this helps.

Delphine Descends: Chapter 1 excerpt

Delphine Descends by Darrel William Moore

1
High Commander Delphine von Dallas strode along the bridge of Zeus’s Rage, watching the planet engorge in the view of the pellucid hull like a sickly yellow cancer. She leaned, placing a hand on the cold alloy so it covered the yolky sphere entirely and imagined how the system would look if the planet weren’t there at all.

They’d been sent to defend this allied world, but Delphine had differen Read more of this blog post »

"Tao Solandis is a heart moving six story tale cleverly woven into a single story. Each short self contained story has a completely different style, all of them made me think. I highly recommend. It’s everything sci-fi can and should be. I’ll remember" Read more of this review »
