I've read many, many accounts, wondering all the while how a level-headed, logic-oriented woman like myself (most days!) would deal with having a small child suddenly claim to have been murdered.

It's this nightmare scenario the begins my new book, THE OFF SEASON (link in the comments)--and story that early reviewers say will keep you turning pages until you finally figure out what's going on.

Do you believe it's possible for people to "remember" past lives or to channel the dead? Or do you, like Dr. Christina Paxton from the book, tend to think there's always a rational explanation?(less)

“ME’s bound to rule your sister’s death a suicide, Ms. Miller. I know how hard it is to accept—” Anger roaring in her ears, Lauren slapped her palms hard against the cushions as she pushed herself to her feet. “You’re with the FBI, right? So why are you even here, if all you’re going to do is feed me the cops’ regurgitated bullshit?” “I was called”
Colleen Thompson, The Best Victim

“In the desert I saw a creature, naked, bestial, Who, squatting upon the ground, Held his heart in his hands, And ate of it. I said, "Is it good, friend?" "It is bitter-bitter," he answered; "But I like it "Because it is bitter, `And because it is my heart."

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

“As for literary criticism in general: I have long felt that any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel or a play or a poem is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae or a banana split.”
kurt Vonnegut, Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage
