Marie Patlan (aka Amanda) has been writing stories since the third grade, when she turned in a five-page story about talking dogs to a local youth arts contest. She works on a computer all day, along with most of the night as well. Amanda is a proud Latina who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Hope College and her Master’s degree in Technical Communication from Minnesota State University. You can find her on the internet at amandareviewsthings.substack.com. If you see her in the wild, she probably has a book in her purse.

In fact, when I was in high school, I wrote some of my first fan fiction in a notebook during random free minutes in my classes and would sometimes make myself cry... that's a story for another time. ;) So how do I work through the tears? I let them out, and then I let the scene sit for a while, and then I return to it. Usually, when I'm reading it back, I'm able to see it a lot more logically than when I first wrote it. Having an analytical brain helps with this a lot. But if it's stuck in my head, if I'm protective of my characters and of what is happening to them, that's when I know I'm onto something. As an example of this, Declan and Cordelia were stuck in my head for YEARS. And now they're about to be out in the world. :)(less)

My only idea when I started NaNo (I used to be such a pantser) was that I wanted it to start at a rally that went wrong. As the book went through phases of self-editing and beta-reads, I realized that I didn't want to play my cards so early. So I split the opening scene into three parts, which are now the beginnings of the three parts of the book, and I went from there. :)(less)

“I'm engulfed in her. I've never felt more right in my whole life as in this moment. And I know it's going to hurt me in the end. I can already feel it. But I can't help getting lost in her.
I can't help it.”
Amanda Gernentz Hanson, Something Beautiful

“No mourners. No funerals. Among them, it passed for 'good luck.”
Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows

“I tended to spend too much time with my favorite things, loved them too hard until I wore them down. After a while, they became more like a shorthand for who I was and less like things I actually enjoyed.”
Brittany Cavallaro, The Last of August

“He watches her the way Harshaw watches fire. Like he’ll never have enough of her. Like he’s trying to capture what he can before she’s gone.”
Leigh Bardugo, Ruin and Rising

“I wanted the two of us to be complicated together, to be difficult and engrossing and blindingly brilliant.”
Brittany Cavallaro, A Study in Charlotte

“I run for I don't know how long. Hours, maybe, or days. Alex told me to run. So I run. You have to understand. I am no one special. I am just a single girl. I am five feet two inches tall and I am in-between in every way. But I have a secret. You can build walls all the way to the sky and I will find a way to fly above them. You can try to pin me down with a hundred thousand arms, but I will find a way to resist. And there are many of us out there, more than you think. People who refuse to stop believing. People who refuse to come to earth. People who love in a world without walls, people who love into hate, into refusal, against hope, and without fear. I love you. Remember. They cannot take it.”
Lauren Oliver, Delirium
