And then blow up the box. My subject matter was how trauma and surviving violence disrupts, dismantles and destroys set categories, clear narratives, and coherency. To try and write with a simple, straightforward storytelling style would be to violate the very subject matter I was trying to convey. Lean into poetics. (less)

It expands on Nobody Cries by honoring one's ancestors. It also draws on a variety of fields - education, tech, and the arts - for data exploring how important conditions are in creating thriving cultures and communities. (less)

“For my community, our vocations start with survival. The world was not built for us, though it was built on the backs of our ancestors, the colonized, the oppressed, the enslaved, and other marginalized people.”
Patrick B. Reyes, Nobody Cries When We Die: God, Community, and Surviving to Adulthood

“But could there still be justice in another way? Could there be forgiveness? Spirits often leave this world, but rarely do they leave our communities.”
Patrick B. Reyes, Nobody Cries When We Die: God, Community, and Surviving to Adulthood
