“Clothes that belonged to a small child or an Italian widow, nothing in between.”

“It would be a few weeks of awkwardness, of words being restricted to just hellos in the corridor or thank-yous when taking out the trash. But then—a cup of coffee in the kitchen could spark something. Aliya making toast while I started the kettle, a stray word about classes, a hummed line of a song the other liked could turn into a full conversation between us, an unraveling that was difficult to hold back from. When it was good between us, the words flowed like a river, a rushing gasping quickness, a need to communicate everything we could possibly think of. The kitchen a space of reconciliation, of noodles getting cold because we had to debate the merits of something too urgently to eat.”
