Grief

I have not been on Goodreads or any social Media much. I have been editing my new book and been reflecting on and writing about grief. I just noticed that I bought a book by a Goodreads author on grief and only read a couple of chapters. But so much has happened since last year. It's Grief: The Dance of Self Discovery, by Edy Nathan is the book. The book is beautifully written, I couldn't finish it because I was in the midst of and overwhelmed with grief. Curious I had been grieving the loss of my husband for two years, and surgery and recovery is teaching me a new journey and new dance steps , I would love to hear from others who find some resonance with my own sense of this space. My last piece is called Grief Has a Way of Tapping you on the Shoulder www.DeloresLoweFriedman.com https://www.deloreslowefriedman.com/g... Lowe Friedman Thank you.

Wildflowers Wins North Street Book Prize

Wildflowers just won the 2021 North Street Prize for Literary Fiction, First Prize
I learned about Wildflowers winning this award about three weeks ago, and had to keep it a secret until it was publicly announced. The Press Release just went public so I can finally tell you. It is just sinking in, and the more I learn about the judges, the number of entrants, and the history of this contest, the prouder I feel. Wildflowers won a thousand dollars monetary prize, but far more important to me is the recognition for the work, and the hope that it will garner the attention of new readers. Thank you to the many readers from whom I have heard, who speak of Wildflowers’ characters Camille, Saundra, and Jewel as if they are living, breathing people. The greatest honor is when they say, ” I wonder what Camille is up to.”

Wildflowers Read by Book Club in Kenya

Hello,
I am still riding high on the news that my book Wildflowers is going to be read by a bookclub in Kenya. Last week I got the news . I have been so happy since then. I was mentioning it to my physical therapist who had read the book twice and then complaining about te balance exercise I had to do. When I finished it the young lady next to me said, " I just found you and your book, and i am getting it." I guess the excitement is contagious!

Discovering a Legacy

I had a wonderful experience this weekend and I wrote about it in my blog, www.deloreslowefriedman.com. I bumped into a stranger whose life intersected with mine. It's one of those stories that reminds you that when you throw a pebble into a pool you do not know where the ripples will lead. Do take a look at Discovering a Legacy on my blog which tells of a my college experience working to get a black history course at Hunter College. He took a course in black history in the year 2000.
The backdrop of my novel Wildflowers is the sixties, and Saturday brought some of the events in the book into high relief.

Wildflowers and Bay Ridge Book Club

Yesterday I visited the Bay Ridge Book Club and met nine wonderful women . Their love for the characters of Wildflowers lifted me up. One had read it twice. We talked about the fragility and vulnerability of women in the book and how that is again in the news. What heartens me most is how relatable the characters are to so many different women, and how they find their qualities universal. Thank you Bay Ridge Book Club. As I said last night, "My cheeks are warm, you have made me so happy."

Wildflowers Love my male characters!

Wildflowers I Love My Male Characters! Here is one.
Here's the beginning of Chapter 14 of Wildflowers
COLE
Dawn always wakes me. So much of the time it is gray. Today it was yellow. It filled the room, as we lay wrapped in sheets and each other. She looked so beautiful there in my bed, so many shades of cinnamon. I loved looking at her.
I had always felt secure in my aloneness. It was not that I never wanted the encumbrances of a woman. I had had that. Women had moved into my world; brought their plants, suitcases, and pillows; stayed; and then moved on, leaving photos, makeup, assorted undergarments, and memories in drawers where I least expected to find them. I had loved a few, one deeply; felt sorry for some; nursed their wounds; and sent them on. But Camille—I wanted her all the
time and into the future. My passion for her made my skin warm...

Jane's review Jan 16, 2018
really liked it

An excellent read! All characters are well-described and very believable. 'Wildflowers' is a story that covers all emotions. This novel will linger on in my mind for some time because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I received 'Wildflowers' as a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you. P.S. The cover is gorgeous!

Thanks Jane. I am so happy you enjoyed it.

Hearing from a person who enjoyed your book is a feeling that is indescribable, and I am a writer. It leaves you with a warm feeling inside and a bit of a glow. I know how that sounds, but that's as close as I can get to the sensation.
