In answer to what inspired The Woman From The River, it was a case from early in my ER career that haunts me to this day--a young woman who's naked body was found floating in the Saint Lawrence. I had to pronounce her dead, but never discovered her name nor learned her story. Now, forty years later, I felt compelled to give her one.
