"I wrote The Untethered because I couldn't find many novels in a contemporary, non-fantasy setting which had protagonists who I considered heroic. And I find nothing to be more heroic than someone chasing their own dream against all odds."

I loved seeing two fiercely independent individuals interacting so intensely. Dominique's philosophical contradiction created a scenario for the most unique romance I've ever seen in fiction. At the end of the novel, once Dominique stopped being afraid of the world, it became a more 'typical' romance, but then again, the story was over. I wish Rand would've written a sequel so I could have seen them doing great things together.(less)

But don't expect it anytime soon; The Untethered took me four years to complete.(less)

“I find nothing to be more heroic than someone chasing their own dream against all odds.”
S.W. Southwick, The Untethered

“Have you ever seen a world so amazing you wanted to inhale it, like air sucking into a jet engine? And the more you inhaled, the faster you flew, until you knew, without having to ask anyone else, that you were living?”
S.W. Southwick, The Untethered

“Want me to say it? Want me to confess what makes me an actual felon and reserves me a choice spot in hell?”

“Please, Alexandria Patra,” Preton said, “tell me all your regrets.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I taught children to surrender their developing minds to concepts like the greater good or the good of society which can’t exist in any form in this world without actual kids being trampled underneath their untouchable banners.”

Pointing at her own chest, she added, “I taught children that in order to live up to those ‘higher’ ideals they must be obedient—to others, must sacrifice their dreams—to the needs of others. I taught them it was more important to be a part of a group than to stand on their own judgment. I told the non-conforming kids they should feel guilty for wanting to live on their own terms.”

Alexa swept a hand forward, pointing it at Preton. “I then delivered every ego-stripped, dream-crushed child to the power mongers of the world like you, who will use this universally accepted mirage of morality to control them.”
S.W. Southwick, The Untethered

“Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”
Aristotle

“Do not confuse "duty" with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect.
But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible.”
Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

“The Argument from Intimidation is a confession of intellectual impotence.”
Ayn Rand, The Virtue of Selfishness: A New Concept of Egoism

“When he stops swinging fists and starts talking about love and sacrificing for others, that’s when you should pucker up for the real punch, because you can’t avoid your own fist if you’ve been convinced you deserve it.”
S.W. Southwick, The Untethered

“When the message is demanding you give up the only things you care about, what’s more offensive? A punch to the face or the kindest sounding words in the dictionary?”
S.W. Southwick, The Untethered
