Book Review: Off the Map

Looking for a fun road trip romance with all the feels? Trish Doller’s Off the Map might be for you!

Off the Map by Trish Doller is a fun frolic through Ireland with an independent American woman who’s been living on the road for a decade afraid to go home, and a sweet Irishman who’s been afraid to pursue his dreams. Recommended to me by one of my amazing author friends (Laurel Greer) who never recommends a dud, this book pulled me out of a hard reading slump.

In fact, she recommended it because she said she felt like she could’ve been reading one of my books. So, of course I had to check it out. And boy did it strike a chord…

Uber-competent, independent, sexual heroine? Check. Golden Retriever hero ready and willing to learn from the heroine, who falls for her because of her independence not in spite of it? Check again. A nice amount of spice? Check three. And of course, delightful writing and characters with deep, dark secrets to work thorough together and alone.

Off the Map starts when our heroine, Carla, heads to Ireland for her best friend’s wedding, and is met by the groom’s brother, Eamon—who is slated to give her ride to the wedding about six hours away. But the attraction is palpable and what starts as a quick fling turns into a weekend-long road trip around Ireland and a whole bunch of adventures. Along the way the learn a lot about themselves and each other.

I am a huge fan of competence porn and badass women who don’t need a man, but discover they’d like a partner who supports them. This book delivers all that along with all the feels. I highly recommend you grab a copy of Off the Map right now. It’s a perfect summer read.

About Off the Map

Trish Doller’s idyllic romance Off the Map proves sometimes a wrong turn can lead to the exact right destination.

On the road to love, you don’t need a GPS…

Carla Black’s life motto is “here for a good time, not for a long time.” She’s been traveling the world on her own in her vintage Jeep Wrangler for nearly a decade, stopping only long enough to replenish her adventure fund. She doesn’t do love and she doesn’t ever go home.

Eamon Sullivan is a modern-day cartographer who creates digital maps. His work helps people find their way, but he’s the one who’s lost his sense of direction. He’s unhappy at work, recently dumped, and his one big dream is stalled out―literally.

Fate throws them together when Carla arrives in Dublin for her best friend’s wedding and Eamon is tasked with picking her up from the airport. But what should be a simple drive across Ireland quickly becomes complicated with chemistry-filled detours, unexpected feelings, and a chance at love – if only they choose it.

Themes and Tropes in My Romance Novels

Recurring themes and tropes in my romance novels.

I write steamy contemporary outdoor adventure romance stories. While setting them in the outdoors means some themes and tropes in my romance novels are going to be constants, it’s funny how many other themes and tropes recur in my work—though I think that’s true of all authors.

Some are intentional, but many of them somehow find their way into my books through my subconscious. Now that I’ve penned six and published four, I’m beginning to see the trends.

Intentional themes and tropes in my romance novels:Women rescuing men in the outdoors. As a woman who’s rescued plenty of men while working as a whitewater raft guide, I love flipping the script and changing the narrative this way. So, I write Alpha females who are deserving of love not despite their more masculine qualities or interests, but because of them (see competence porn below). The beauty and value of wild places. My degree is in Environmental Education, I spent years as a Naturalist, and I studied nature writing in college. It’s important to me to expose people to nature in all its beauty and power and grandeur because you don’t save places you don’t know or care about.Beta male/Cinnamon roll heroes. The heroes in my stories are always amalgamations of all the men I’ve known and loved in my life. They are real, dimensional men with feelings. Some might struggle more to express themselves, but they always find a way. And they are men who are more than willing to admit that a woman can be brilliant, competent, beautiful, strong, sexy and more skilled or knowledgeable than them.Competence porn. People who are good at something, and know it but aren’t cocky about it, are sexy. Whether it’s setting up camp, woodworking, ballet, or anything else. In particular, I enjoy showing women who are good at things normally associated with men.Finding your own path to happiness and “success”. Between society, parents, and the basic tenants of capitalism, we’re all told what we should do with our lives. I took a path that was decidedly not what I was supposed to do and have created a happy and fulfilling life. I also took a few detours into well-paying jobs that should’ve led me to success but only made me unhappy. Since I spend far too much time thinking about this sort of thing, I decided to explore it in my writing.Unintentional themes and tropes. Can’t judge a book by its cover. Many of us, especially women and minorities, have dealt with being pigeonholed based on how we present ourselves outwardly—whether it’s at a job or while dating. It’s happened to me so many times in so many situations I almost expect it. Which is why it seems to seep into so many of stories.Friends with benefits. I had a few fantastic FWB relationships in my twenties. Only one turned into something more, but regardless, they always seem like a good idea at the time…Apparently, some of my characters feel the same. Food porn. I love to cook and eat good food, and we all gotta eat. So, many conversations and scenes in my books are set around meals. This means I must also describe what the characters are tasting and experiencing and try to make my readers drool (or get turned on, depending.).Found family and female friendships. I didn’t intend to write about these topics as much as I do, but whatever is important to me tends to bleed into my writing. When I decided to focus the Wild Love series around three girlfriends it was mainly in response to how many series are focused around brothers or male teammates. I didn’t realize where it would lead. But it will definitely be a focus of mine from now on.

Wild at Heart is a Multi-Award Winner!

Wild at Heart wins the long contemporary romance category of the New England Reader’s Choice Award, making it a multi-award winner!

Wild at Heart has done it again…It’s been chosen as the winner of the long contemporary romance category of the 2022 New England Reader’s Choice Award, put on by the New England Romance Writers. I’m over the moon that this book is now a multi-award winner (They like me. They really like me!).

When I wrote this book, I was writing the book I wanted to read. A romance about a badass outdoorswoman finding love and adventure, and rescuing the man along the way. I didn’t know if anyone else would want to read it. It fills my heart with joy that this book is finding an audience.

What Readers are Saying about Wild at Heart

“WILD AT HEART is a fun romp in the wilderness with stunning vistas and witty dialogue. I look forward to reading the next book in the series!” – JoAnne/Novels Alive

“…as I started diving into the story I was hooked. I love the development between Jules and Even and how this isn’t a typical’ guy rescues girl ‘… Also the spice in this book is great, just the right amount and is written beautifully. Overall this book was an amazing read.” – Izzy S Bookshelf on IG

“A modern-day flip on a damsel in distress romance where the heroine saves the hero in the heart of the Pacific Northwest. Her narration is so full of life, you’ll be yearning to explore outside just by reading Wild at Heart. A brilliant romance, Wild at Heart is your next bucket list read.” – N.N. Light’s Book Heaven

“I found it difficult to stop reading, and I love how the book transitions between Jules and Evan. I recommend Wild At Heart to readers who enjoy a suspenseful romance filled with the imagery of tackling the unknown.” – Stephanie Chapman for Readers’ Favorite

“Author Stacy Gold hits the mark in this unique and exciting romance novel full of outdoor adventure, a sexy trail romance, self-doubt and the bravery behind loving again after past heartbreak.” – NetGalley Reviewer

“I really enjoyed this book, it had a lot of good things going for it. Badass, independent woman? Check! Golden-retriever vibes man? Also check! Their chemistry was great, their meet-cute was adorable, and the whole hiking adventure was wonderful.” – NetGalley Reviewer

“My contemporary choices lately have not been hits. So, I was a bit weary when I open the eBook and then I fell into the wonderful, sweet, sexy, funny world of Stacy Gold. Jules was just having one day after another but that doesn’t compare to Evan’s luck. Add that to them both being stuck out in the wilderness and let the fun begin. Or rather, the action, romance, flirting and humor. Seriously, this book had it all.” – TBR Pile

Wild at Heart has Won the 2023 Firebird Award

My sassy, sexy, contemporary romance, Wild at Heart, has won the romance division of the 2023 Firebird Awards!

I am thrilled to announce Wild at Heart has won the Firebird Book Award for romance! For a while, it’s seemed like this book–which kept making it to the finals–was destined to be always the bridesmaid, never the bride. It’s wonderful to see this special story is finding it’s readers.

When I wrote Wild at Heart, I was trying to do something a little different–a romance set in the outdoors with a badass heroine who rescues the “mansel in distress”. I had  no idea how it would be received. Turns out, based on almost eighty, four and five star reviews and these contest results it seems pretty damn well.

Here’s hoping readers love book two in the Wild Love Series, Drive Me Wild, just as much if not more.

Stacy Gold’s Wild Love Romance Series Explained

Stacy Gold’s Wild Love Series of Steamy, Adventure Romance Novels Features Badass Women, ‘Mansels in Distress’, and Mother Nature.

Happy couple hugging on a mountaintop at sunsetI’m finishing edits on the second book in my Wild Love romance series, Drive Me Wild, and it’s got me thinking about the themes and ideas recurring throughout this series. What I’m writing and why I’m writing it, and what ties all three books together.

I’ve spent a lifetime working and playing hard in the still male-dominated outdoors. Starting out as a raft guide and then as a backcountry ranger, I was at best greeted with skepticism, and at worst ridiculed, scoffed at, and told to go back to the mall. I was also informed, in no uncertain terms, that I’d never have a successful life or career, and damn sure never attract a man, if I didn’t adhere to society’s standards of feminity.

So, when I decided to write romance novels, I knew I wanted to write books featuring women like me in the outdoors finding all the success and happiness they deserve. Women who are independent, smart, determined, and worthy of love even if everyone tells them they’re not. The result is a funny, sexy, feminist adventure romance series set in the great outdoors.

The three books in the Wild Love series

Each book in the series is a standalone, and tells the story of one of three best friends, Jules Martinez, Aly Teller, and Bryn Jones, finding greater fulfillment in their lives and love along the way.

Wild at Heart book cover image of two sock covered feet in the open doorway of an orange tent, with mountains in the distanceBook One – Wild at Heart

This first book is Jules’s story of solo hiking most of the Pacific Crest Trail through Washington State solo—at least she’s solo until she meets Evan, an inexperienced hiker out for a solo because he’s struggling to find joy and meaning in his life, and who keeps getting in over his head. Wild at Heart was a  2022 Publishers Weekly Booklife Prize finalist.

Learn more and grab your copy here.

Book Two – Drive Me Wild (Coming July 2023)

Aly’s a successful, career-driven real estate agent who doesn’t have time for a man—definitely not one who doesn’t check every box on her list. When she agrees to go backpacking as part of a fundraiser for Jules’s new summer camp, she has no idea she’s going to end up hiking solo with a man she doesn’t even know. One who checks none of her boxes but turns out to be far more attractive than he has any damn right to be.

Book Three – Wild About You (Coming in 2024)

Bryn’s book is a second chance story about her first love from college. He’s the man who set the bar for everyone else she’s ever dated, and the man who left her with no warning years ago and shattered her heart. When he turns up at the nonprofit backpacking program she volunteers for, despite the combustible chemistry between them, a simple apology isn’t going to be enough. They’ve got issues to work through (like everyone in the series) to find their happily ever after.

What’s inside these fun, sexy romance novels?

What we read, and what we see in movies and on TV, changes our perception of the world and ourselves. I’m working to change the narrative about strong women in the outdoor. That’s why my books include…

Snarky, badass heroines. The women in my books are like so many badass outdoor women I’ve known—perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, in the outdoors and out. Jules, Aly, and Bryn run successful businesses, lead kids in the outdoors, and are comfortable alone in the wilderness. These women don’t need a man or children to make their lives complete, but they discover they enjoy having partners who love, support, and respect them—and give them amazing orgasms.

Speaking of orgasms… All of my books are smexy as hell. We’re talking steamy, spicy, graphic descriptions of sex—along with how that shared intimacy transforms people’s relationships with each other and themselves. Why include graphic sex? Because conversations about women’s pleasure still aren’t front and center in our society, and they need to be. And because it’s fun to get a little turned on reading about other people having sex.

Found family and the power of deep friendships between women. We aren’t all blessed with wonderful parents who love and support us unconditionally. And too often women are portrayed as mean girls who’d cut each other out in an instant for their own benefit. Luckily, blood isn’t what makes someone family. Bryn, Aly, and Jules have formed a family unit dedicated to each other’s happiness, success, and well-being.

Mansels in distress being rescued by the woman in the wilderness. I remember my first outdoor job as
a river raft guide, and men being shocked a woman like me could do the job. And even more, shocked when they fell out of the raft and I rescued them. Flipping the script on the usual damsel in distress romance trope is realistic, and can be funny, awkward, heartwarming, or parts of all three. It definitely shifts the power balance of the typical romance novel relationship in interesting ways.

Adventures through the remote wilderness with stunning scenery. If I can’t be in the great outdoors, I’d just as soon be thinking and writing about it. So, each of these books is designed to transport you to the high crags and lush temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. And I’ve learned firsthand how being out in the wilderness brings out the best and worst in people. Which is a ton of fun in a romance. Whether you enjoy hiking or backpacking, or you’re more of an armchair adventurer, I hope you get swept away.

All the feels. I believe every great romance novel should make you laugh, cry, think, and get a little turned on. So, I do my best to make that happen in every one of my books.

My Word of the Year is Balance

My Word for 2023 is “Balance”Stacy Gold and husband maintaining balance in their tandem whitewater kayak

Stacy Gold and husband maintain balance paddling their tandem whitewater kayak

Well, here we are at the start of another new year. I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions. What I do enjoy is choosing a word to be my theme for the year. For 2023, my word is “balance”.

Balance between work life and Home Life. Balance between spending time with friends and family and spending time alone. Between exercising enough and playing hard outdoors, and making time for resting and recharging.

I set goals and make plans all the time (like the amount of editing I need to complete each week to publish my next adventure romance novel, Drive Me Wild, this spring). So I don’t need to put extra pressure on myself with resolution starting arbitrarily on January 1st.

Which is part of my trying to find and maintain balance. I’ve been searching for this elusive balance my entire adult life, and I feel like I’ve only even got close in the past few years. For a couple reasons…

The balance point in life is always moving.

One of the hard parts, of course, is the balance point is constantly moving and changing. I, or someone close to me, gets sick or injured, and the balance shifts. I have writing deadlines to meet, and the balance shifts again. Both happen at the same time, and I trip and fall over flat on my face (metaphorically speaking).

It’s actually a lot like Whitewater kayaking. When I’m a kayaking, the water is constantly moving and changing along with my boat’s position on the river, and my body’s position in my boat. All in an effort to stay upright through whatever the river throws my way.

Waves often come at me from both sides. Sometimes the waves and holes and drops are stacked right behind each other. So, I have to change my lean and/or my boat position repeatedly and superfast to get through each one upright.

When I’m unsuccessful, I get flipped over. Most times, thankfully, I’m able to roll right back up in my kayak. It’s often not as easy in life. But there’s another reason finding balance is so hard…

We live in a capitalistic society that values working hard and making money over anything else.

Back in the stone age of the pre-Internet days, I found it much easier to make time for myself. While I didn’t make much money, I had the kind of job where I could leave work behind when I went home. I definitely didn’t have all this pressure to constantly be online and creating content.

In the romance genre, it’s not uncommon to hear about other authors releasing four or even far more books a year. Plus, we’re supposed to make posts and videos for social media. And run our own Facebook group. And organize a street team to help promote our books. And be our own publishers and publicists. And… And…

At a certain point, I had to recognize that I will likely never put out more than a couple books a year, and that’s only if they’re on the shorter side). My health and well-being suffer if I spend too much time on a keyboard these days. And the only content I really wanna produce are my books. At a speed that lets me still enjoy my life. Definitely at a pace that doesn’t injure my body.

So, for 2023 (and beyond, I’m sure) I’m searching for that elusive balance. And rolling up quickly when I inevitably lose that balance. I’ll keep writing books I love at a pace that feels good to me. And I’ll honor the times when I need to exercise, get outdoors, or just sit around and read a good book— without guilt.

What’s your word (or goal or resolution) for 2023?

Wild at Heart Is a Booklife Prize Finalist

Wild at Heart, by Stacy Gold, Named One of Five 2022 Booklife Prize Finalists!

My contemporary backpacking romance novel Wild at Heart made it past the semi-finals and is now one of five books chosen from five different genres as a 2022 BookLife Prize finalist. Even if I make it no further in this contest, I am incredibly honored and excited!!

As part of making the finals, I’m currently featured in an interview on the Booklife website. And I got an amazing review from the romance category judge, USA Today bestselling author Pippa Grant.

Review of Wild at Heart by Stacy Gold

Wild at Heart is a beautiful, slow-burn love story about where we come from and how we view the world. Jules wants to immerse herself in nature on a weeks-long backpacking trip across Washington State. Evan comes from money and knows there’s more to life, so he’s on the same trail, looking for purpose beyond family expectations. I loved the role reversal of this romance, where Evan has the money to afford all the gear but none of the practical experience, and so Jules is regularly saving him from himself. Their relationship grows from a friendship forged of their different perspectives of nature, to a deeper understanding of who they each are and what they want. This book made me want to strap on a backpack and go have an adventure of my own!”  – Pippa Grant
