The Power of the Librarian

[This post originally ran on Jungle Red Writers]

Mysteries, no matter the genre, are about curious people asking questions, and to me, librarians are among the most curious people I know – solving big and small mysteries for their patrons every day. My novel, Little Comfort, is about a librarian named Hester Thursby who finds serial killers, which has given me the opportunity to talk with librarians all over as I’ve researched, and to remember one librarian in particular who played an important role in my life and many others....

Who loves a bad review? I do!

Befriending My Harshest Critics: Making the Best of Bad Reviews

Some career authors avoid reading reviews but I’m not one of them. For example, I came across this 1-star critique of my novel from a Goodreads reviewer: “This book is a mess.”

That was my first bad review. I remember reading it and being hit by the intensity of the language, the almost visceral dislike that seemed to spew from the reviewer’s words... (this post originally ran on Career Authors: http://bit.ly/2P7P84H)

Little Comfort (Hester Thursby Mystery, #1) by Edwin Hill

As promised, here is the prequel to LITTLE COMFORT, which originally ran on Dru's Book Musings.

***

“You’re the one who’s acting like a three-year-old,” Morgan said as he got dressed in Hester’s bedroom. “Daphne is Kate’s mother.”

Tonight was Morgan’s thirty-sixth birthday, and since he and Daphne were twins, technically it was her birthday too.

“Shut up,” Hester said. “Daphne promised to get a babysitter and didn’t.”

In her heart, Hester knew that Morgan – her more-than-boyfriend, not-quite-husband – was right, but the whole situation still annoyed her. She hadn’t gotten used to having Daphne’s three-year-old kid around all the time...

The Evolution of Hester Thursby

Originally posted on the Wickeds!

The Evolution of Hester Thursby

Authors often reflect on the challenge of writing a second novel, and how much more challenging it can be to meet the expectations of others versus your own expectations. After all, for most writers a first novel comes right from the heart, and you wind up serving as chief coach, critic, and motivator for the many months (or years) it takes to finish. If you are fortunate enough to write a second novel, it likely comes with the expectations of readers, an editor, and a publicity team...

How to Call Yourself a Writer

“What do you do?”

“I’m a writer.”

It can be hard to say, and even harder to believe. I’ve tried the title on—writer—a handful of times, and then returned it, like a sweater that didn’t quite fit. I’ve asked myself what it meant to be something when that something didn’t pay the rent (or, for that matter, for a pack of gum)....
