When my dad, who was such a secure rock to his kids and grandkids died (quite a few years ago), I flew back to California for his funeral.

At one point in the early evening, I held my sweet one-year-old son on my hip as I stood in my parents’ front yard. My eyes were drawn to the sky as I tried to imagine how far away my dad suddenly was and what heaven might be like, I grieved my dad and the sense of security that he had provided to all of us.

Then as I looked up at the sky, I saw the first star appear. I snuggled my son, pointed it out to him, and said, “Look! One little night star!” He mimicked me and pointed too. Those connected moments of sifting through the feelings of missing my dad, wanting to pass that wonderful sense of security on to future generations, and noticing one little star appearing in an evening sky while holding my son. That was the inspiration.

Sometimes the simplest things, like snuggling to read a book and the pattern of a bedtime routine, can add to a child's sense of security.

“The more hurt I felt, the more I blamed the Lord for my pain. As my anger reached an irrational level, I hit one of the lowest points in my life. All of the waiting, disappointment, frustration, faith, hope, prayer, begging, pleading, doctors' visits, and medication seemed futile. God seemed so very far away.
Finally I had it out with God in a yelling, stomping, fist-shaking, tearful fit unlike any I had ever dared before. As a "good Christian" I had never fully admitted to Him, or to myself, just how angry I really was. But He had known the true nature of my heart all along.
I couldn't shock or surprise Him with my temper tantrum. He was big enough to handle all my rage. By confronting Him, I admitted to both of us
exactly how I perceived our relationship. But this didn't drive Him further away; He drew me close. Honesty”

“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.”

Rainer Maria Rilke
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
