Paul Amirault is a television producer, writer, and weekend photographer. During the first twenty-eight years of his career, he has produced, written, or developed more than a hundred hours of TV programming for broadcast and cable networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, the History Channel, A&E, TLC, Lifetime, Bio, and ID (Investigation Discovery). His credits include "Murder Book," "Deadly Wives," "The Amazing Race," "Kids Say the Darndest Things," "Behind Closed Doors with Joan Lunden," and the long-running HGTV home renovation series, "Over Your Head."

His first book, "The Man Who Sent the SOS," chronicles an unusual personal experience.

He's currently working on a second book that continues his spiritual journey.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Writing, editing and publishing a book is hard work, and th…moreI think the simplest answer is you have to be passionate about the story you want to tell. Writing, editing and publishing a book is hard work, and there are many times in the process you might get frustrated and want to quit. From my experience, the only thing that can potentially stop you is the passion you have for your project.

I'd like to share something the great character actress, Anne Meara (mother of Ben Stiller), told me when I was a freshman back in college. Since I'd always been a fan of her work (especially in the sitcom, "All in the Family"), I went to see her speak at my school. During the audience Q&A afterwards, the 18-year-old me asked her basically the same question being posed here: "What advice do you have for a young person trying to break into the entertainment industry?" Her answer was not what I expected: "I always try to discourage young people from going into the entertainment business," she said, "because only those who **can't** be discouraged have any shot at making it."

Although this might be considered tough advice, I subsequently found it 100% truth during my forays in the notoriously insular entertainment industry. And that same take-away exists for publishing, too. Receiving rejection letters from agents and/or publishers (if you choose to go the traditional route) is far from enjoyable.

And even before you start putting your work out there, you need to be open-minded about beta-reader criticism, and yet, thick-skinned enough not to be discouraged if someone misconstrues (and/or trashes) your work. And, in the end, the only thing that'll pull you through is a belief in yourself—or, if you haven't achieved that rarified headspace yet—your passion for the story itself.(less)
