The Window, the Notebook, and the Duck

What perception does and what it doesnt Have you ever been sure that something was broken, and so broken that you couldnt figure out how to fix it? Or lost something, only to find it exactly where it was supposed to be? Whats the lesson in that? Was it really broken, really lost? Or […]

The Story You Tell About Them

Let's be careful about what we allow to land in our thinking. Yes—tell the truth about a situation. But recognize that the story about it, the story that caused it, can be shifted. It can be rewritten. It must be.

Age Is a Number, Not a Fact

The story we tell ourselves is the story we liveand it can be rewritten. Recently, in an aerobics class, dancing with forty other peoplemostly womenI flashed back to the 1980s and dancing with my friend in nightclubs. I lived in San Diego then, and wed meet early, dance for a few hours, and leave right […]

A Different Branch on the Same Tree

How a childhood dream becomes the gift you’re living now. I always wanted to be a dancer. But after a few dance classes as a child I still remember the little black tuxedo my mom sewed for my tap recital my parents decided that what I really wanted was piano and art lessons. They […]

The Turtle, The Frog, and The Open Door

When the Infinite Sends You a Messenger The day after we moved into our house, a turtle came to visit. I was in bed. Exhausted. Wrung out from everything it had taken to buy and move into this house. But when Del told me that there was a turtle at the front door, I pulled […]

The Spiritual Practice I Found at the Mall

Research is confirming what mystics and contemplatives have known forever: presence isn't just a spiritual nicety. It's fundamental to happiness, to health, to feeling truly alive.

And curiosity — that wide-open, wondering attention we had as children before it was quietly educated out of us — turns out to be one of the things that actually keeps us alive, in every sense of the word.

Are You Coming or Not

Each of us can find a way forward by choosing, again and again, to be willing. Willing to look for the good contained in change. Willing to ask better questions. Willing to believe that a solution exists before we can see it. There is always a solution. If we begin every problem from that premise, we move into this new age differently — with steadiness, with grace, with our eyes open.

Why Are You Here?

And What Are You Going to Do About It? Somewhere beneath the noise, the screens, and the endless doing — there is a life waiting to be lived. What do we do with our time? We fill it with emotion — worry, fear, regret, shame. We reach for the phone, lose ourselves in screens of […]

What Grows Beneath the Snow

A few days ago, the weather turned warm—for January in Ohio, anyway. The eight inches of snow that had blanketed the ground melted away, and we seized the moment. We cleaned up the yard, scrubbed the bird baths, and picked up fallen tree limbs. A lovely spring-like gift in the middle of winter. Of course, […]

One Step at a Time: Living Your Divine Purpose

As I near the completion of yet another book, I’m reminded again how important it is to take one step at a time. We are not humans on a spiritual journey—we are the infinite expressing itself, temporarily focused through this remarkable lens we call a lifetime. And here’s what I’ve learned: what you perceive to […]
