John Grabowski has long been fascinated by the complexities and contradictions in human beings. After stints in advertising, public relations, and TV news, he decided he wanted to take some time out to try his hand at writing stories steeped in the zeitgeist of today that are often complex and boast neither heroes nor anti-heroes.

His first novel, Entertaining Welsey Shaw, was praised by Kirkus Reviews for being witty, fast-paced, and “filled with flirtatious banter.” A collection of short fiction, Violet Rothko and Other Stories, was released in September 2019. He is currently writing a novel about the dotcom mania in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Even in school I always thought an assignment to write something was the bone the teacher threw us after we finished our math homework. It wasn't till later I realized some people hated to write, had difficulty writing. I just hear a voice go off in my head and I write. Sometimes I have an off day, so I just read. Reading might be the best cure there is for writer's blok. My favorite contemporary authors are Deborah Eisenberg, Alice Munro, Joseph O'Neill, Richard Ford, Tom McCarthy, Milan Kundera. I like fiction that's basically realistic and not escapist, though the magical realism of the likes of Jose Saramago is also enjoyable. (less)
