C P Cabaniss lives in a small town in the southern United States where she teaches math, imagines—and sometimes writes—stories, and reads too many books at once. She is most inspired while with her horses, meditating in a historic cemetery, or exploring retired naval ships. She loves to travel and has long dreamed of adopting a nomadic lifestyle—though she has yet to determine what this would mean for her collection of books, which seems to grow by the day.

To be a writer you need to be a reader. The more you read, the better your own writing will become. Take notes as you go, highlighting what you think does or does not work in telling a story, and allow all of this to shape your writing. If you particularly like the way one writer develops characters, try to pinpoint what in their writing makes the characters so great. Same thing for world building or any other aspect of a book that you find particularly good. Dig in until you discover what, exactly, speaks to you in the way that writer develops their story.

But don't just read. You need to write as well. Get your ideas down on paper. An idea in your mind is great, but it can never truly develop. It's only through writing that you can really discover the story you want to tell. So write. And don't worry about what someone else might think about your writing. Nothing is perfect, not everyone likes the same things, and as long as you're happy it doesn't matter what someone else might think. Take advice from other writers and readers, but don't let that advice dictate the direction your writing takes. This is your story, tell it how you think it should be told. (less)

Horses have been a large part of my life for many years, so I tend to daydream about riding. I also watch a lot of videos from various competitions around the world. It can be quite addictive.

Writing is something that I never really stop thinking about. I loved writing long before I loved reading and that love has remained constant in my life. So I often think about writing and have gotten in the habit of actually doing the writing, which is a good thing.

The best thing about being a horse person and a writer is that the two are so intertwined for me. My horses have always sparked my creativity, whether I'm working on a horse related story or not, and I get most of my best ideas while at the barn. (less)

writing with scrivener

After completing NaNoWriMo in 2019, I decided to take advantage of the 50% off of scrivener that was being offered, having heard so many good things about the program. And honestly, I’m so glad I did.

You can make any word processing program work for you, I truly believe this, but certain easily accessible features are nice to have. I’m no expert on scrivener, very far from it, but I love having ev

“When you're already dead, why should you be afraid?”

“What are friends for if not to keep us humble and remind us of our roots?”
C.P. Cabaniss, Before and After

Topics Mentioning This Author

“If God is an author and the universe is the biggest novel ever written, I may feel as if I'm the lead character in the story, but like every man and woman on Earth, I am a suporting player in one of billions of subplots. You know what happens to supporting players. Too often they are killed off in chapter 3, or in chapter 10, or in chapter 35. A supporting player always has to be looking over his shoulder.”
Dean Koontz, Life Expectancy

“Every life is complicated, every mind a kingdom of unmapped mysteries.”
Dean Koontz, Forever Odd

“No one can grant you happiness. Happiness is a choice we all have the power to make.”
Dean Koontz, Life Expectancy

“The things we worry about the most are never the things that bite us. The sharpest teeth always take their nip of us when we are looking the other way.”
Dean Koontz, Forever Odd

“We yearn for tomorrow and the progress that it represents. But yesterday was once tomorrow, and where was progress in it? Or we yearn for yesterday, for what was or what might have been. But as we are yearning, the present is becoming the past, so the past is nothing but our yearning for second chances.”
Dean Koontz, Brother Odd
