SWEET LITTLE NOTHING EXCERPT

I’ve seen Emmalyn a few times on campus now. She always looks so meek and mild and innocent. She’s convincing too, with her eyes always on the ground and her soft, stuttered words .

Hell, I was almost ready to call the whole thing off, my friendship with Rob be dammed.

Until I remembered it’s all a ruse; I know the kind of girl she really is.

Treacherous. Traitorous. A liar who had a serious case of buyer’s remorse.

I wavered for a split second when I saw her venturing out of the walking trail, with an unreadable expression on her face.

At first, I misread it as fear, but I quickly saw it for what it truly was—guilt.

The absolute unfettered guilt in her gaze when she saw me was all the confirmation I needed.

And when she ran? I shake my head at her idiocy.

Innocent people don’t run. Why would they when they have nothing to hide?

If she thinks running away somehow absolves her of her sins…

She’s wrong.

JANUARY WRAP-UP

Let me start this first ever wrap-up post by saying THANKS! Thank you for wanting to know what I’m reading, for caring. Thank you for loving books, romance, and the written word with the same ferocity as me. It makes my heart happy and my soul warm to know my suggestions will land among kindred spirits. Seriously, book lovers, y’all are my people . . . the best of the best & I am thankful for y’all every single day.

And now that the sappy shit is out of the way, here comes the good stuff . . . BOOK RECS!

1. UNTOUCHABLE BY SAM MARIANO https://amzn.to/2SU6Mrv [Free in KU]

Y’all. I’m not even gonna lie. This book 110% pushed my boundaries with what I thought I was comfortable with in a romance. But, sometimes, a little boundary pushing isn’t such a bad thing. All in all, I really enjoyed this book & immediately devoured two more by her!

2. BECAUSE OF YOU & AFTER YOU – https://amzn.to/2CjzaMw [Free in KU]

These two books brought the freaking feels and held nothing back. I legit ugly cried while reading.

3. IF | A NOVEL BY RANDI COOLEY WILSON – https://amzn.to/2AVZ611 [Free in KU]

Not gonna lie, it was the cover of this baby that drew me in & luckily, the content housed inside it did not disappoint. This is a story than spans the course of several years and will put you through the emotional ringer.

4. HEARTLESS BY KRISTY LOVEhttps://amzn.to/2SSIEFt [Free in KU]

This book, shocking-not-shocking, was also an angst-fest. *Are y’all sensing a trend with my reading yet?* I went into this one not knowing what to expect since Miss Love is a new-to-me-author. Well, let me tell y’all. She has a way with words & brought the effing feels. HOLY WHOASUS! If YA-to-Adulthood/rockstar/second chance romances with all the feels and plenty of steam are your jam, you’ll def love this.

5. COME AGAIN BY JIFFY KATE – https://amzn.to/2VWd5fM [Free in KU]

I really enjoyed this book, but that’s not so surprising, seeing as I enjoy pretty much anything the dynamic duo known as Jiffy Kate pens. Come Again was just the palate cleanser I needed after so many emotionally heavy books. Now, don’t get me wrong . . . Shaw & Avery’s story is plenty emotional, but it was overall lighter than my previous reads. The fact that it’s set in NOLA is simply a bonus!

6. THE KISS THIEF BY L.J. SHEN – https://amzn.to/2VNIFwt [Free in KU]

TKT was classic L.J., complete with an anti-hero you love to hate. Fake relationships/arranged marriages are my jelly-jam, so reading this one was a no-brainer. Not to mention, it was Francesca and Wolfe who kept me company during migraine-a-geddon.

7. Hold me Today by Maria Luis – https://amzn.to/2t28bkg [Free in KU]

HOLY-FRIGGIN-BAKLAVA THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! Nick and Mina’s chemistry absolutely jumped off of the page & consumed me. Legit, this book was so damn delicious that I’m already hounding Maria for the next book in the series.

8. Lass by Harloe Rae – https://amzn.to/2TozQYe [Free in KU]

Oh. My. Goodness. Y’all. Roomates-to-lovers is such a yummy trope. I love the way the sexual tension ebbs and flows & let me tell y’all…Harloe freaking brings it. Add in that the hero is a virgin, and yeah, I’m sunk.

9. Boys of Brayshaw High by Meagan Brandy – https://amzn.to/2t2NBR2 [Free in KU]

OH. MY. MERCIFUL. JESUS. This book is the holy grail of ★Mature YA★, which is one of my most favorite tropes in all of the world. With this book, Meagan Brandy has created a sexy and enthralling plot line with characters so compelling I felt like I knew them. This book was angsty and raw and sexy and just a ginormous bucket of OH-HELL-YES! Seriously, read it.

10. Fumbled Hearts by Meagan Brandy – https://amzn.to/2t2le5t

While my initial reaction is to shout “DAMN! SHE’S DONE IT AGAIN!”, I can’t. Why? Because this book was Meagan Brandy’s debut. If I wouldn’t have known that going into it, I wouldn’t have believed it. It is well written and well plotted and I 110% FLOVED it.

11. Defenseless Hearts by Meagan Brandy –  https://amzn.to/2WxEFk5

Angst. Oh, holy effing angst. And heartbreak. And swoons. And tears. Big, fat, ugly sopping tears. Maybe even some ranting messages alerting Meagan to the fact that I’m a fan girl supreme. But, I’m 98% positive she’s already taken out a restraining order on me. She is forever on my auto-one-click list.

12. Reckless Love by Kelly Elliott – https://amzn.to/2TsYCql

Talk about bittersweet; the 7th and final book Cowboys and Angels series. Honestly, I almost didn’t want to read it. Not because it wasn’t amazing, but because I didn’t want it to end. There’s just something about swoony, alpha male cowboys and I love a good family saga. If you’re in the mood for some serious swoon and a whole lot of sexy, give this series a chance. I will say, these books need to be read in order. Grab the first book here: https://amzn.to/2t4YZf7

Well, that’s all for this month book lovers. Hopefully you enjoyed this list & maybe even found some books to read. Be sure and let me know if you loved any of the same books as me! <3

REBEL HEART EXCERPT

Have I mentioned how excited I am for this book? I’m sure I have. Multiple times. But just in case, I’ll say it again.

I AM SO FREAKING PUMPED UP FOR THIS FREAKING BOOK!

Phew. Now that that’s out of the way, how about an excerpt?

From the moment I peeled open my eyes this morning, I knew it was going to be a shit-tastic day. Why? Because it’s Thursday—which means tutoring with Brock day—which is comparable to hell on earth. I would literally rather get a root canal with no numbing than deal with his immature ass.

Dramatic? Maybe.

Accurate? Fuck yes.

I tripped and face-planted getting out of bed this morning. My flat iron crapped out on me. The tip of my favorite eyeliner snapped off, with no sharpener in sight. The load of clothes I’d tossed in the dryer last night was still fucking damp and smelled like a dirty sock. And to top it all off, I knocked over my coffee can, spilling the grinds to the floor, thus rendering me coffee-less on today of all days. So, here I am, dressed in a pair of ripped-the-fuck-up leggings, a lace bralette, and a shirt with the sleeves and sides cut out, rushing out the door loaded down with my crossbody backpack, keys, and empty Thermos.

I trudge out to my sweet-as-shit matte black ’69 Chevelle. No lie, this car is my baby. It was a gift from my grandpa—along with a generous trust—much to my parents’ chagrin. When they realized I wasn’t ever going to fit into the neat, well-mannered box they wanted to shove me into, they all but disowned me, going as far as shutting off my cell, canceling my credit card, kicking me out, and refusing to pay my tuition.

No lie. All because I wanted to go to Prewit U and double major in business and education, with a concentration in literacy, instead of following in the footsteps of the always-perfect Elenore Adams with an MRS degree. God, most people are proud of their children for having fucking goals. But my parents? They wanted me to become a luncheon-planning, tea-drinking housewife whose only ambition was to be able to fold a fucking fitted sheet.

Yeah, no thanks.

For obvious reasons, I was never daddy’s little girl. Nah, the only thing that asshole and I have in common is our deep, coffee-colored eyes.

My grandpa—my dad’s dad, mind you—is a whole ’nother story. I’ve always been a “grandpa’s girl.” From a young age, he’s been my person. The one human on this earth who loved me unconditionally. So, when dear old mom and dad cut me off, Gramps stepped up something fierce. Knowing how much it pissed off the parental units? Simply a bonus.

A smile replaces my frown as I crank the ignition, the deafening roar of engine sending a jolt of happiness through my body. There’s nothing better than the sound of good, old-fashioned, American muscle. Mmm, yes. Please.

Even though I’m short on time, I make a pit stop at the campus coffee shop and order two large lattes: a hot one for now, and an iced one for later. Because something—mainly my impending tutoring session with Jockstrap—tells me it’s gonna be a two-coffee kind of day.

Two classes later, and I’m free. Well, free until five o’clock, when I have to meet He Who Shall Not be Named. That leaves me with a measly forty-five minutes to kill…just enough time to grab a bite to eat before heading to hell.

****

With a full belly and armed with my third coffee of the day, I whip my Chevelle into an open spot in the library parking lot, shocked as shit to see Brock pulling into the spot next to me.

We exit our vehicles—his a big, shiny, jacked-up truck…probably overcompensating for his small dick. I take him in as he swaggers toward me; his dark hair is pushed back from his face and his baby blue polo shirt—free of any wrinkles—pops against his tanned skin and makes his blue eyes impossibly bluer. I can’t help but smirk when I see he’s paired said polo with charcoal-colored sweatpants and leather slip-on boat shoes.

“Get dressed in the dark?” I ask, unable to help myself.

My body heats as he drags his eyes all over me—until his mouth opens, ruining the moment. “Pot, meet kettle.”

Dammit. I totally opened myself up for that one, but still. His eyes lingered on the exposed skin from the cut-out sleeves of my shirt—what the hell AJ? Since when do you want Brock Larson checking you out? Snap out of it!

Brock moves in closer, running his knuckles over the hood of my car. “This looks just like your Gramps’s old ride.”

“That’s because it is,” I snap, marching toward the library.

Brock wastes no time and jogs to catch up. “Damn. You don’t gotta be so snippy, Abby Jane.”

Abruptly, I stop and spin to face him. “AJ,” I clip out. “AJ. That’s what I go by now. Two letters. Surely you can handle that.”

His chiseled face splits into a wide grin. This asshole is grinning at my reprimand. “You’ll always be Abby Jane to me.”

Author Spotlight: JAMI ALBRIGHT

OH. MY. DEADLINES. Y’all. Getting book three to my editor was something else, but it’s safely with her, so…back to our regularly scheduled programming. Starting with an Author Spotlight. Today I’m featuring the lovely & talented…

To kick things off, lemme tell you a little about Jami!

Jami Albright is a born and raised Texas girl and is the multiple award-winning author of The Brides on the Run series—a fun, sexy, snarky, laugh-out-loud good time.

If you don’t snort with laughter, then she hasn’t done her job.

She is also a wife, mother, and an actress/comedian. She used to think she could sing until someone paid her to stop.

She took their money and kept on singing.

Jami loves her family, all things Outlander, and puppies make her stupid happy. She can be found on Sundays during football season watching her beloved Houston Texans and trying not to let them break her heart.

Jami loves to hear from readers.

Now, let’s get into what we’re all here for…

Her books!

So, first things first. Y’all. This book is LOL-pee-your-pants-funny. Like, no lie. Scarlett and Gavin will have you ROFL. Don’t believe me? Check out the blurb:

She’s a good-girl control freak. He’s a bad boy in need of a clean image. Will these opposites attract or self-destruct?

Scarlett Kelly is the poster child for responsible living. Growing up as the daughter of the town floozy, she’s made it her mission to be the exact opposite of her mother. So when she wakes up naked and hung over in bed with a bad-boy rock star, she bolts immediately. There’s just one problem: Scarlett’s bedmate is her new husband.

Gavin needs to repair his image or his music career will go down the tubes. He’s also just learned he has a son he never knew existed. He needs to settle down, and bribing his new wife to stay married may just fit everything into place.

Scarlett agrees to the ruse to help her family’s financial troubles even though she can hardly control herself around the rock star. As they search for Gavin’s son, will their unlikely matrimony give them exactly what they’ve been missing or send them packing?

Running From a Rock Star is the first book in a series of comedic contemporary romance novels. If you like zany characters, razor-sharp wit, and unlikely love stories, then you’ll love the first book in Jami Albright’s Brides On the Run series.

You know when you read a really good book, and it’s the first time you’ve read an author, how you get nervous about the 2nd book? You worry maybe it won’t be as good, or as witty, or as well-written… WELL! Let me go on and assure y’all, Jami knocks it out of the damn park with Running with a Sweet Talker. Jack and Luanne are five stars all the way! Check out the blurb:

She’s a take-no-prisoners fireball. He’s a sweet-talking charmer. It could be love…if they don’t kill each other first.

Hotshot lawyer Luanne Price may not believe in happily ever after, but she’d do just about anything to earn her absentee father’s love. So when he waltzes back into her life with a plan for her to marry his business associate, she foolishly agrees. But on the wedding day, things go south. Fast. Luanne’s desperate to get away, even if that means hitching a cross-country ride with the infuriating Jack Avery.

Jack needs to get Luanne out of his system. He’ll watch her tie the knot and forget about her. Once she’s married to another man, then she’ll be off-limits forever. Solid plan. Until he spots her army-crawling through the bushes to escape the Wedding of the Season.

He knows he should let someone else deal with the runaway bride. But if there’s one thing Jack has never been able to do, it’s resist Luanne. Will their romance rev up on the open road, or will Jack and Luanne crash and burn?

Running With a Sweet Talker is the second book in a series of comedic contemporary romance novels. If you like zany characters, razor-sharp wit, and unlikely love stories, then you’ll love the second book in Jami Albright’s Brides on the Run series.

{Author Spotlight} Jodie Larson

Author Spotlight
Jodie Larson

Y’all, if you know me, even a tiny, then you know I luuurve supporting my fellow authors. For a while I was posting Author Spotlights on the reg, but I fell behind thanks to … deadlines. However, fear not, for I am back and I have an AHH-MAZING author to tell y’all about!

Jodie lives along the shores of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota with her husband and four beautiful daughters. Writing has always been something she enjoys and uses it as an escape, in addition to getting lost in her numerous books. Her family is highly supportive of both her love for reading and writing. A lover of all things happily ever after, she writes romantic novels because the world could use a little more love.

But what Jodie forgot to mention in her bio, is that she is so incredibly kind and selfless. She is thoughtful and funny. And oh-so-talented. I’m so beyond honored to call her my friend.

Now, let me tell you about her books! Jodie currently has six books published with a 7th on the way!

First up, her Fated Duet, including the titles Fated to be Yours (currently on sale) & Fated to be Mine.  This duet centers around a shy girl travels to London for a week-long business trip and sits next to a handsome stranger on the plane, who she ends up working with for the week. A vacation fling ensues, but does fate have more planned for them? Read the Fated Duet to find out!

Buy them here:

Fated to be Yours: http://amzn.to/2DG5HiC

Fated to be Mine: http://amzn.to/2GckJL9

Up next we have Lessons of the Heart — a student/teacher romance!

Check out the blurb:

The first time we met, James Dumont knocked me off my feet.

He’s sexy and smart, the classic good guy… Exactly what I want, and everything I’ve ever dreamed of. The most perfect guy at Somerset High School.

He even makes sixth-period Geography interesting.

Everyone says high school is tough. Fighting my attraction to James? That’s the hardest part, because this guy, my perfect match, the one who makes my heart overrule my head…

He’s my teacher.

What if the greatest lesson you could learn in school couldn’t be found in a book?

Buy it here:

Moving on to another AMAZING Jodie book, let’s talk about I Don’t Regret You. In IDRY we meet Jocelyn, who is unhappy in her marriage. When she’s finally had enough, she gets the courage to stand up for herself and her kids and leave her mentally abusive husband. Now on her own, she has to figure out her new life and rely on help from others, including her new boss who turns into something more. Hubba, hubba, y’all! And, OH-EM-GEE, THE COVER!

Buy it here:

Now, for the series that STOLE MY HEART, Jodie’s LIGHTNING STRIKES series. It’s Rockstars, y’all!

I’m pretty sure these covers speak for themselves, y’all, but in case they don’t, lemme tell you more!

Serenading the Shadows: Adrienne’s entire childhood revolved around the piano: going to recitals, playing nonstop in order to further her career. But at 16, she didn’t want any of it. Then a tragic accident changed her life, leaving her scarred and broken. 10 years later, she can’t move past the events that changed her life. Now she works as a bartender, a far cry from the life her parent’s envisioned for her. One night, her best friend drags her out, determined to change her mind about living like a hermit. That’s when she sees him on stage, the lead singer of the Lightning Strikes. Adrienne has never felt she was worthy of happiness, but Kade is determined to prove her wrong.

Notes of the Past: Myles has a chip on his shoulder. He’s also deemed the playboy of the country’s hottest band; always seen with a different girl after every show. The problem is none of them are the girl who left him, the one who still owned his heart. Then one night, he looks out at the crowd and sees her familiar face. The spark is still there, but the walls he’s built to protect his broken heart keep Tatum at an arm’s length. When she joins the tour, their lingering affection is put to the test and find themselves falling into old habits.

Forbidden Lyrics: Brecken has been in love with his best friend’s sister since the night they kissed in the front seat of her car in her parent’s driveway. One promise to stay away quickly diminished any hope he had so pursuing it further. Nine years later, he’s back in town on a break from his whirlwind tour around the country. And all he can think about is Lizzie. No longer the teen of his memories, she’s a woman and just as beautiful as he remembers. He has three months to convince her that their attraction is something more and worth the fight.

Now, I’m gonna give Forbidden Lyrics a bit of special attention. I’ve had the honor and the pleasure to have already read this book even though it isn’t out until February 29th. Blurb:

Azalea Barnes has hated Drake Collins since the day he broke her teenaged heart.

Fast forward almost seven years later and her libido still hasn’t gotten the memo.

Now they’re frenemies… with benefits.

Which suits Azalea just fine. She gets what her body craves while keeping her heart safe.

Kind of.

Mostly.

Drake has loved Azalea since the day they met. He knows that she’s his forever. Too bad she only sees him as a good time. He wants more. Needs more.

If only he could convince her that it’s real this time. He’s more determined than ever to prove to Azalea that chemistry like theirs doesn’t exist only in the bedroom.

The odds may be against Drake, but he’s prepared for an uphill battle.

Excerpt:

“Drake, you better go check your girl,” Simon interrupts. “I’ll keep this one company.”

I whip my eyes back to where Azalea was dancing, and sure enough, some prick is all up behind her, with his hands in places liable to get them broke.

Not sparing Magnolia and Simon a second glance, I take off for Azalea like a man on a mission. “Mind if I cut in?” I ask, my voice deathly low, nothing more than a growl.

“Yeah, bud, I do, so back off,” the prick replies.

“Not gonna happen. Get your hands off her. Now.” I give him a few seconds to comply, because I’m a nice guy like that, but when he makes no effort to step back, I’m done.

“Little Bit,” I grit out, “tell your friend here to get lost, yeah?”

“We’re just dancin,’ D,” she slurs back. Drunk. Great. She’s drunk.

Ya know how some people are funny drunks, and others mean or sad? Well, Azalea is a rollercoaster drunk. Her mood climbs, like the car does on the track, and just as quickly, it plummets, and before you even have a chance to adjust, she takes you on a loop-de-loop.

“Dancing?” I spit back at her. “Y’all aren’t dancing. You’re grinding all over this schmuck while he just stands here like a pole. You wanna dance, let’s dance.”

And just like that, loser number one is forgotten and replaced. By me. I wrap an arm around her waist and draw her body into mine. I match every roll of her hips verbatim, and together, we get lost in what has to be, hands down, the most erotic foreplay of my life.

Too bad this won’t lead anywhere. She’s testy enough every time we sleep together, so I’m not about to lure her into my bed drunk. Her anger I can handle, because the way I see it, that’s her denying her feelings. But regret? Yeah, I couldn’t stomach that.

Six songs later, Azalea isn’t losing any steam. No, if anything, she’s getting more fired up. Twirling herself around, she brings herself face-to-face with me. Her emerald eyes are glassy, and her smile is wide. She drags her eyes down my body and licks her lips as if she likes what she sees.

“Wanna take a breather?” I ask her.

“No,” she whispers, circling her arms around my neck. “I want to stay right here. I want to keep feeling you with me, Drake.”

“Anything you want, Little Bit, always.” I pull her body into mine, leaving no space between us. The crowd around us dances on, but we’re hardly moving. Barely even swaying. Her pull is too strong, so magnetic, and I’m helpless to fight it.

Bringing my lips to her ear, I gently sing the lyrics of the Thomas Rhett song we’re swaying to, telling her through his words exactly how I crave her, because damn, if those aren’t the most perfect lyrics. Sums shit up just right.
