Recent updates

Hi. I have updated both book 1 (The Keepers Secret) and book 2 (Ruler of the Skies) on Kindle to correct minor errors and to add a new Animoid character.

The new character is Nazaaray. He is a male lion-headed Animoid, best friend of Prince Theodor, and a Captain in the Tamplina Rangers. Nazaaray has been added to the “Animoids” page on The Council of the Elements website.

Enjoy.

Book 3 – Name?

I have started working through the plot and storyline for Book 3 in The Council of the Elements series and trying to think of a name for the book. Book 3 is about the Earth Element, Ambrose and Jaymar have recovered Walto’s tooth which is the Earth gem.

In this book, the tooth transforms back into the gem for a new Earth Elemental Councillor. When the tooth transforms the “earth cracks”, so I am writing in an earthquake event to coincide with the transformation.

I welcome suggestions for a possible book title. You can email using the address below or add a comment to this post.

Thanks in advance. Cheers.

The Keepers Secret – Ambrose reveals he is an Elemental & Jaymar is heading for trouble

Hills outside Pinemarsh

Dunfarg and his raiding party were resting after another night’s raid. They had hit a couple of small villages and some farms. Burning, killing and terrorising as much as they could in a short time.

As yet they had not encountered any resistance from any local militiamen or from the main city Kaemoora. It was all too easy. Dunfarg was feeling very confident. He had sent one of his soldiers back to his general to report their good work.

Kaemoora

Centurion Fenzio and Captain Rawslee were standing in front of an assembly of troops from the Kaemoora militia. Fenzio was middle-aged, average height and build. She was an Air and Earth Elemental. Fenzio was the main advisor to Prince Xavier of Kaemoora.

Captain Rawslee was a strongly built tall man. He had a battle-scarred face and had been captain of the Kaemoora militia for many years.

“Captain, I want you to scout the surrounding hills behind Pinemarsh. That’s where reports have indicated the raiding party has recently been seen.” Fenzio ordered.

Captain Rawslee replied. “Yes Your Eminence. I have my orders from Prince Tolgarn. We will seek them out and put an end to these raids.”

“I hope so. Many of the locals are expressing their outrage at the lack of action against these raiders. Many believe Prince Xavier has been too slow to act.”

“Your Eminence. It has taken us time to assemble a sizable force and to get an accurate report on where these raiders are coming from.  Now we can strike a blow and end this.” The Captain turned and mounted his horse.  He signalled to his company and they proceeded to march out of the city.

Fenzio nodded her head towards a fire Elemental also mounted on a horse. She had arranged for Beaudeen, one of her aids, to accompany the troops. Beaudeen nodded back in response. She had passed on orders from Prince Tolgarn for him to ensure Captain Rawslee’s mission was not a total success. Beaudeen turned his horse and followed the Captain.

On the road to Daarook

As expected a message had arrived from Prince Melville. Isabella and Ava had continued on their journey as instructed.  Many travellers on the road stopped to talk to the royal couple and gave them as much news as they could. It was not good. Volkmire was destroyed and many refugees were fleeing the region.

The Centurions had sent and received many messages to Daarook as well and had kept the Princesses informed.  Recently they had been informed that a combined force of Tamplina Rangers and Middleton Marshals, under the command of Captain Garrett, had been sent to Falsbrook to bolster the city’s defences.

It was morning and the day was fine and sunny. Princess Ava and Centurion Rustilan had taken to riding together most days.  Rustilan was assisting Ava with her mind control and basic exercises to help with the dizziness. Ava was always asking questions about Daarook and High School for Elementals. Rustilan didn’t mind, it made the journey more bearable and it kept him away from Centurion Maklana.

“You mentioned that in the first year, Elementals learn animal communications.” Ava was once again querying Rustilan. “Do we get to communicate with all animals?”

“No.” Replied Rustilan. “Depending on your Elemental strengths you will be able to communicate with certain animals or birds. But even then some animals will not let you communicate with them. You will need to build a trust with them.”

“What animals do you communicate with?” Ava asked.

“Well, to be honest, I don’t do well with animals. I can understand some, birds are my thing. I have a beautiful falcon at Daarook, which is my closest friend. Her name is Fleur.” Rustilan looked above him and around, and then continued. “Out here, I can usually find a bird that will agree to communicate with me, if I ask politely.”

“Oh. Could you?” Ava was exited.

“Okay. I suppose it would be handy to know how far ahead the next village is. Let’s see if we can find out.” He looked around searching the skies and trees for any sign of birdlife. Ava also started looking around for some birds.

It wasn’t long before Rustilan noticed a pair of small black and white birds.  They had been hopping around on the ground eating seeds or insects. They had flown up into a nearby tree as the travelling party approached.

“Stay here and I will try and talk to those two over there.” Rustilan pointed at the two birds now sitting next to each other on a low branch.

Rustilan turned his horse off the road and slowly walked to the tree.  The bird looked agitated and seemed ready to take flight at any moment. Rustilan reined in his horse and stopped a few metres away. He leaned on his horse’s neck. Ava couldn’t hear what he was saying, but she did hear the birds both twittering and chirping. Rustilan held out his hand and one of the birds immediate flew across and landed on his hand. The bird hopped around on his hand and seemed to be merrily twittering about something. Then it flew back to its partner and Rustilan turned his horse and walked back to Ava.

“What did they say?” She couldn’t contain herself.

“Well, as you saw they are excitable little birds and it is a bit difficult to follow their fast chatter.” Rustilan was deliberately drawing this out as he knew Ava was very excited.

“Stop teasing and tell me.” She insisted.

“Okay.” Rustilan smiled. “Three bends in the road and then a small creek and we will be at the next village.”

“That’s all! What about other news?” Ava was disappointed.

“Ah, well you wouldn’t call it news, more gossip.” Rustilan was enjoying himself. “A couple of birds back in one of those trees.” He gestured over his shoulder. ”They have had a clutch of eggs just hatch. The two I spoke to have just built their nest in that tree over there.” He pointed to the trees behind where he had spoken to the pair. “And they think a thread from your nice cloak would go well in their nest.”

“What you got all that?” She was impressed.

“Yes. Would you like to give them some thread?” Rustilan asked.

“Yes, of course.” Ava reached down and grabbed the end of her cloak.  There was a small tear in the hem and some loose threads. She tore off a couple of threads.

Rustilan said. “Follow me.” He turned his horse once again towards the trees. The two small birds had been flitting from tree to tree, while the travellers had been moving along the road. Now they were perched on a low branch of a tree not far away.  Ava followed Rustilan off the road. Rustilan said. “Hold out your hand with the thread and they will come to you.”

Ava did as instructed and within moments, both the birds were sitting on her hand.  They were chirping and tweeting excitedly. Ava was giggling as the bird tickled her hand. Rustilan quietly said in a high pitched voice. “You are welcome. The thread is yours. Go with peace.”

The two birds seemed to understand and they bowed to Ava, quickly picked up the threads and were gone, back into the trees.

“Oh, that was wonderful.” Ava was flushed with excitement. “They seemed to understand. It’s amazing.”

“They did say thank you, even though it was quick. They will put the tread to good use.” Rustilan commented.

“How does it work?” Ava was intrigued.

“Well, it’s a combination of mental powers and acute hearing. Most of the communications are by inference. The animals or birds are pretty adept at understanding single words. It’s harder for us to understand their tweets, etc.”

“How long did it take for you to learn?” She asked.

“Not long. It really depends on you finding a good match to your Elemental powers first and then you can develop your skills over time.”

They saw that the travelling party had moved along the road, so they spurred their horses on to catch up. When they rejoined the others, Princess Isabella approached her daughter and asked. “What have you and the Centurion been up to?”

“I’ve been learning about animal communications.” Ava replied with a smile.

“Oh. What did you communicate with?”

“I didn’t, but Centurion Rustilan chatted to some birds and I gave them some thread from my cloak. They wanted it for their nest.”

“Really and Rustilan told you this.” Isabella sounded sceptical.

“Yes. It’s so exciting to think that I might be able to talk to animals or birds.”

Isabella looked sideways at her daughter and commented. “So are you now looking forward to being an Elemental?”

“There could be some advantages.” Ava smiled.

Her mother looked concerned and then commented. “Just remember, whatever happens. Your father and I will support you, but Daarook has many mysteries and I don’t want you to be fooled into thinking everything will be rosy. The Centurion Order is not something to treat lightly and your father has always considered them to be a threat to our Princedom and our way of life.”

“Mother, I am not blind. I know Centurion Rustilan is trying to win my trust, but I am really trying to learn as much as possible about Daarook before we get there. I want to know what we are walking into.”

Isabella smiled at her daughter. “I always knew you were a smart kid. Just remember, they are desperate to have a hold over your father. So be careful.”

Ava nodded her acknowledgement.

Further back in the group, Maklana had ridden up alongside Rustilan.

“You seem to be getting on well with the young Princess?” Maklana observed.

“Yes. She is very inquisitive about Daarook. I am trying to paint a favourable picture.” Responded Rustilan.

“Keep it up. The more you gain her trust the better. We have a few more days before we get there. I have sent word to Daarook, to expect us soon and that we want the test performed as quickly as possible.”

Rustilan nodded his head in acknowledgement and then spurred his horse ahead.  He didn’t want to spend too much time with Maklana.

Falsbrook

Centurion Rookardi was approaching the city gate which was heavily guarded. It was mid-afternoon and he had been riding hard all the way from Kyeamba. The head guard stepped out to greet the Centurion and Rookardi reined in his horse.

“Your Eminence. Where have you come from and what is your purpose?”

“Get out of my way. I have come a long way to see your Prince. Now let me pass or I will run you over.” Rookardi’s horse reared and the guard jumped back out of the way.

“Your Eminence. We are under martial law and I cannot let you enter without proper authority.” He called to his men. “Stop him!”

Several soldiers rushed out with their spears pointed at Rookardi and they blocked his path into the city.

Rookardi calmed his horse and said. “I apologise. I was unaware you are under martial law. Centurion Issatoro is my friend. Send word to him that Centurion Rookardi is here and he will vouch for me.”

The head guard had joined his men in front of Rookardi. He called over his shoulder to another. “Inform His Eminence, Centurion Issatoro that Centurion Rookardi is waiting at the gate.”

Rookardi bowed his head slightly in thanks.

“Your Eminence. You must still tell me your purpose.” Commanded the guard.

“With the fall of Volkmire, Centurions everywhere have been ordered to assist where possible. I am here to offer my assistance to His Highness Prince Jarl.” This seemed to answer the guard’s question. He and his men, however, remained positioned between Rookardi and the gate.

After a long wait, the soldier to return with an Elemental.

“His Eminence, Centurion Issatoro has commanded that Centurion Rookardi be allowed to enter. He is to go with this Elemental immediately.”

The head guard turned to Rookardi. “Seems like you are known to His Eminence. You can enter. This Elemental will show you the way.”

The head guard and his men moved aside and Rookardi urged his horse forward. The Elemental ran on ahead of Rookardi as he made his way through the streets of Falsbrook.  He noted that the city was very quiet. The streets mostly empty. Soon he was dismounting and an attendant was leading his horse away. The Elemental then escorted Rookardi into a grand house where Centurion Issatoro was waiting.

“Rookardi. Good to see you.” Issatoro stepped forward and they embraced.

“I came as soon as I heard. Unusual for the Dark Terror to strike outside the Dark period of winter.”

“Yes, come there is much to discuss.” Issatoro directed Rookardi to a seat next to his desk and then he sat on the opposite side.

“Prince Jarl, must be worried to declare martial law.” Commented Rookardi.

“Not really. He had been considering it for a while.  He really wants to rid his realm of Animoids once and for all.” Issatoro shifted some papers on his desk.

Rookardi asked. “Have any other Centurions arrived?”

“Only one, Centurion Pryborg. Not sure if you know him. Horrible weasel of a man. Anyway, he didn’t stay. Didn’t like the idea of taking orders from me.”

“Well, as a matter of fact, I do know him.  He and I have crossed paths recently.” Rookardi had a wry smile.

Issatoro continued. “He left for Volkmire yesterday morning. Didn’t even ask Prince Jarl for permission. He was most annoyed.”

“Yes. Pryborg doesn’t take much notice of others. He is a bit of a loner. Probably better that he wasn’t here when I arrived.” Rookardi paused then asked. “What are the Prince’s intentions?”

“He has ordered blockages be put in place to all south roads. I have good Elementals stationed at each. He has extended the curfew and the city is locked down tight.”

“I had noticed it very quiet.  Has Jarl sent any troops to Volkmire?”

“No. He is not interested in helping the city.”

Rookardi asked. “Is there a Centurion in Volkmire?”

“Yes. Centurion Rolland has been there for a couple of years.” Replied Issatoro.

“Of course. I should have remembered. He was due to get an important role in Daarook, but he did something to upset our leader Graguut. The next thing he was banished to a backwater like Volkmire.”

“Yes, I had heard something similar. However, by all accounts, he has been doing a good job with Mayor Tumana. He will have his work cut out now though.”

Rookardi asked. “What will you have me do? I am here at your disposal.”

“Firstly, you must present yourself to Prince Jarl, immediately. Don’t tell him about our little meeting or that you and I are friends. He may consider that a threat to his authority. He has been very touchy lately. Then let’s see what the Prince has in mind for you.”

Rookardi stood up and shook hands with Issatoro. “I will no doubt return shortly.”

“The Elemental that brought you here will take you to the palace and he will keep quiet about our meeting.” Issatoro moved across the room and opened the door to see Rookardi out.

A short while later, Rookardi was standing in front of Prince Jarl in the palace.

“Your Highness. I present His Eminence, Centurion Rookardi.  He has just arrived from Kyeamba.” A guard bowed low and stepped back after presenting Rookardi.

Rookardi bowed his head slightly. “Your Highness Prince Jarl. I bring greetings from His Excellency the High Centurion and express my condolences about the state of affairs that have prevailed upon your realm.”

“Centurion Rookardi, I accept your condolences. We are on high alert after the tragedy of Volkmire. There is little we can do for them now. We must ready ourselves for a possible attack at any moment. I see that you have Fire as an element. That will be a welcome support to our defences. Plus Earth. Are you a healer?” The Prince inquired.

“No, Your Highness. I never mastered the art of healing. However, I am ready to offer my services in any way possible. I am here to help.” Rookardi this time bowed a little further to emphasise his goodwill.

“Good.” The Prince seemed pleased. “My local Centurion is Issatoro, I don’t know if you know him.” The Prince stared at Rookardi trying to see any hint of recognition, and then he continued. “He is a good fellow and has served me well.”

“Your Highness. I have been travelling about a lot for the last few years and have not kept up with where all the Centurions are stationed.” He paused and then added. “I certainly know of Centurion Issatoro.”

The Prince waved his hand as if to think nothing of it. He then asked. “So, what is the latest from Daarook?”

“I attended the Festival of Light in Conaldra and had the opportunity to take council recently with His Excellency the High Centurion himself.”

The Prince interrupted. “Keep going, but walk with me. Tell me about the assassination attempt on the High Prince Anastas.”

Rookardi was a little surprised by Jarl’s questions, but followed the Prince and spent the next hour or so in deep discussions.  The Prince was eager to know as much as possible about what was happening outside his realm and in particular about Daarook.

Pukavan

The Golden Swan had docked and unloaded her cargo. Raum had managed to find some very interested buyers. The ship was now anchored again in the harbour and they were waiting for news about Ambrose. The sun was starting to set as evening approached.

Jalen had been flying back and forth trying to keep everyone updated on Ambrose’s approach to the city. He had even dropped into the palace and given Command Prahid an update. He was now flying back over the harbour and glided down onto the deck of the Golden Swan.

Jaymar ran up to him. “What’s the latest?” He asked eagerly.

“Aark. Ambrose has arrived. He and the rest are at an Inn in town.”

Raum walked over to join them. “Is he coming out to the ship?”

“Aark. No. He wants to see the Princess first.” Jalen blinked his large eyes.

“Well, we must wait then.” Raum was a little disappointed.

“But Dad. Can’t we go and see him?” Urged Jaymar.

“By the time we get to the Inn, Ambrose would have left for the Palace. We can wait.”

Jaymar looked very disappointed. Some of the others joined them and Raum informed them of what was happening. They were all eager to know what was going on and hear the latest from Ambrose.

Ambrose had decided to go to the Palace on his own. He left Udolf and Fineen behind. Telling them that if there was time tonight, they would go out to the Golden Swan, on his return.

He now approached the main entrance to the walled Palace.  The guards were now used to seeing him and allowed him to enter. Command Prahid was not far away and quickly joined Ambrose as they both headed for one of the main chambers to see the Princess.

Ambrose didn’t talk much to Prahid. He was holding off until he was with Sienna. Finally, they both stood in front of the Princess and her son. Several Elementals were in attendance and some of Sienna’s other advisors.

“Welcome Master Ambrose. Interesting times abound. What have you to report this time?”

“Your Highness.” Ambrose bowed his head in respect and continued. “After you left, I found out that the Dark Terror is likely to attack a coastal city very soon.”

A gasp went around the room.

He continued. “I believe it will be Gymbala, as Falsbrook is too heavily protected.”

“What do you propose, Ambrose?” Asked Princess Sienna.

“I plan to send word to Kamboro at Lockmort and ask him to send a squad of Lizard soldiers to help defend the city.”

“What! Are you mad?” Prahid blurted out. He stared at Ambrose in disbelief, then turned to his Princess. “This is madness, Your Highness.”

“Silence Commander. I want to hear him out.” She insisted.

Ambrose continued. “I know it seems unlikely that he will help. But, I truly believe there is a change happening in Lockmort and what better way to test their endeavour for a truce with you, than to see how Kamboro reacts to the request.” The Princess considered his proposal.

He continued. “I also would request, Your Highness that you allow some of your best archers to go onboard the Golden Swan and sail with me immediately to Gymbala. Together, the joint forces may be enough to stop a disaster from happening in Gymbala.”

Silence fell over the chamber. All eyes were on the Princess. Then Prince Aravin spoke to his mother. “Mother, I think we should try.”  She looked down at her son and smiled. “I think we should too.”

Princess Sienna then looked around at the people in the chamber. “We will try to stop the slaughter of the people of Gymbala. Master Ambrose you can have your archers. Command Prahid make it happen. But I have a question for you. How will you get there in time and how will you get a message to Kamboro quickly enough?”

Ambrose smiled. “I have considerable resources ready to assist. However, I do have to ask another favour.” He paused then asked. “Your Highness, I will need to take Rosalina with me.”

“Why?”

“She is an Air Elemental. Together we can make the Golden Swan speed across the waters to Gymbala.”

The whole chamber was in shock.  Ambrose had just suggested that he was an Elemental.

Sienna immediately issued an order to those in the room. “Please, everyone in this room. I now ask you all, to pledge your silence to what Master Ambrose has just revealed to us.”

Everyone nodded their heads in acknowledgement. Some even spoke out saying. “I pledge my word, Your Highness.”

Sienna then asked. “Rosalina and Ambrose I request that you both join me and my son now in my private chambers.”

She dismissed the others and took her son by the hand and led them into her private chamber. “Ambrose. Tell me truthfully. Are you an Elemental?”

He looked directly into Sienna’s eyes. “I have kept this a secret for an eternity. Yes. I am an Elemental and a member of the secret group call the ‘Keepers of the Elements’”.

Rosalina interrupted. “What element do you control?”

“I am actually a class two Elemental and I control Fire and Air.”

Rosalina was shocked. “As powerful as a Centurion?”

“Yes.”

Sienna observed. “Somehow I knew. You always had something about you that my father and my husband couldn’t work out. Why reveal yourself now? You could have told me years ago.”

“Only a very small group, close to me know, it is safer that way. Now back to the pressing issue at hand, Gymbala. With Rosalina’s help, together we can use our Air skills to move the Golden Swan faster across the sea and be in Gymbala tomorrow. If you will let us.” Ambrose looked pleadingly at Sienna. “What do you say?”

Sienna looks at Rosalina. “What do you think?”

“I am prepared to help. But nothing of this must ever reach the Centurion Order, because they would surely kill me.”

“Sienna, it’s now up to you. Will you give me the archers?”

“Yes. I will issue the command tonight and tomorrow you can sail.”

They all looked relieved now that a course of action had been set. They said their goodbyes and departed to finalise arrangements.

Ambrose went back via the Inn and collected both Fineen and Udolf. They already had an idea of his plan and as they made their way to the Golden Swan, Ambrose filled them in on the final details.

Once onboard the Golden Swan, Ambrose had everyone assemble in the captain’s cabin. After explaining his plan he finally asked for questions.

Raum asked. “You really told Sienna that you were an Elemental?”

“Yes. I had no option in the end.”

Fineen also asked “And Rosalina was there. She knows?”

“Yes.”

Rafeeq interrupted. “How do you plan to get Kamboro to cooperate and who is going to ask him to send troops to Gymbala?”

Ambrose turned to Fineen. “I was hoping that Fineen would go. You are the fastest.” They all nodded in agreement. “But I need Jalen to fly there first.”

Ambrose looked at Jalen. “I need you to fly first thing tomorrow. Find Nasrald and tell him everything. Tell him that Fineen is on her way. I am hoping Fineen can be there by nightfall if she leaves tonight.  With the help of Nasrald, if you can convince Kamboro to act, he may have a force ready to leave the next morning. If they travel light and fast, the Lizard soldiers could be there sometime the day after.”

Fineen stood up and said. “Well, I had better be going.”

“Do you need anything? Are you clear on the plan?” Ambrose queried her. “Yes. I am ready. Just give me some extra food and water and someone to take me ashore.”

Udolf stepped forward. “I will take you.”

Grimhilda quickly gathered some food and water while Fineen packed a small pack. She paused and looked around the room. “See you in Gymbala.”

Ambrose went outside with them to see her off. “By the Elements. Go with speed.”

“See you again soon old friend.” Fineen and Udolf slipped over the side and were gone. Ambrose returned to the cabin.

“I am hoping by dawn Rosalina and the archers will be ready to board and we can sail immediately. Jalen you must leave at first light. Once you have given your message to Nasrald. I then need you to fly to Gymbala. I have a contact there. His name is Arkana and he is head of the ‘Keepers’ in the town. Tell him everything and I am hoping he will know what to do. Make sure he understands that the Lizard soldiers, if and when they arrive, are not the enemy.”

The rest of the evening was spent going over the plans and Ambrose answering the others questions as best he could. It was late when they broke up and tried to get some sleep.

Jaymar was so excited he couldn’t sleep. They were going to fight the Dark Terror. That was amazing. He wondered why Ambrose had said nothing to him. How he could help? He was eager to try out his new skills.

Everyone rose early the next day. The sun was not yet up when Jaymar heard people talking and shouting orders. When he got out onto the deck the archers were already boarding. There were lots of them. Topol and his father were directing them to different parts of the ship. Ambrose and Rosalina were standing together at the helm on the raised deck.

Jaymar surveyed the rest of the ship and notice Rafeeq swinging from the rigging as usual and he was chattering to anyone that would listen. Udolf was a statue of a figure standing at the bow. Jalen was nowhere to be seen. He thought he must have gone already.

Grimhilda came up from below deck and hurried over to Jaymar.

“Jaymar. You need to get your things. Pack a small bag and meet me back here.” She was very matter of fact.

Jaymar was confused. “Get my things! But I’m going with the ship. Aren’t I?”

“No. Ambrose has decided that both you and I must go ashore.” She didn’t stay to argue but hurried off towards Raum.

Jaymar was distraught and confused. He was not going to miss out on this adventure. He ran to the back of the ship to confront Ambrose.

Ambrose and Rosalina were deep in discussions when he interrupted them.

“I want to go. I’m not staying here.” Jaymar blurted out.

Ambrose turned to him. “This is going to be very dangerous. I won’t risk you being hurt or killed. Your father and I have agreed. You are staying.” Ambrose was very serious and Jaymar knew he was not going to change his mind. However, he was going to try.

“I can help. My powers are improving.”

“No” Came back the short answer. “Go and get your things and join your mother.” Ambrose was not going to have any more fuss. He turned to Rosalina and continued their conversation.

Jaymar was nearly in tears, but he held himself together. He turned and ran to his cabin. Once inside the cabin, he sat on the floor. He heard the ship’s bell ringing and wondered what that was for. His mind was racing. Slowly, he got up and started packing some of his clothes into a pack.

He began to think. ‘How can I stay on the ship without them knowing? I could hide.’

No. They wouldn’t sail until they found him. It all seemed hopeless. He would have to go with his mother. He finished packing and then left the cabin.

Grimhilda was waiting for him by the railing. Still, more archers were arriving and boarding the ship. His mother grabbed him by the shoulders and asked. “You ready? Follow me down into the boat.” She gave him a small smile. Jaymar nodded his head in acknowledgement and watched as his mother climbed over the railing, down into a waiting boat.

Below, one of the boats that brought archers over from the wharf, was now empty and waiting for them to return. Not only was Jaymar and his mother leaving a couple of the crew also stood at the railing carrying their packs. They signalled for Jaymar to go over.

Soon Jaymar was sitting next to his mother in the boat as one of the other crewmen climbed down the ladder. Once he was in the boat and the others joined them, they took an oar each and started rowing to shore.

Jaymar and his mother looked up at the Golden Swan as they pulled away. Ambrose had now joined Raum at the railing and they both waved goodbye. Jaymar said under his breath. “It’s not fair.” His mother didn’t hear.

They passed another boat going to the ship full of archers. Jaymar looked at the wharf and saw that there was still a group of archers waiting to be taken to the ship.  Plus, there was a large crowd jostling to see what was happening or saying farewell to the archers.  Was this his chance?

The boat pulled alongside the wharf and Grimhilda climbed up the ladder.  She looked down at the boat, urging Jaymar to follow. Before he started his climb, he turned to one of the crewmen.

“When we get off, cover for me. Tell my mother that I have run ahead. I was upset. Got it?”

The crewman shrugged his shoulders and asked. “Why?”

“I’m returning to the ship. She mustn’t know until it’s too late.” Jaymar pleaded with his eyes and said. “Please.”

The crewman looked at the other man and then nodded his head in acknowledgement. “Don’t get yourself killed.”

Jaymar smiled and then quickly climbed up the ladder onto the wharf joining his mother. Jaymar heard one of the archers saying. “Quickly they are starting to raise the sails. If we don’t hurry we will not catch her.”

The two crewmen had now climbed onto the wharf and the remaining archers were all clambering down into the boat.

Grimhilda watched for a moment, then said. “Come Jaymar, let’s go.”

They started along the wharf. It was crowded and there was a lot of pushing and shoving.

Jaymar took his chance and moved ahead of his mother, but then he turned back towards the boat. Grimhilda didn’t notice at first. It was a struggle to walk against the crowd.

Jaymar quickly got back to the ladder, just as the last archer had climbed into the boat. Jaymar slipped over the side and was down the ladder and in the boat. He yelled to one of the men. “Push off, that’s everyone.”

The man didn’t hesitate. They were in a hurry and the ship was preparing to sail.

The rowers pulled hard and soon the boat was well on its way to the ship. Jaymar immediately sat down on the deck, between some archers to keep as low as possible, so as not to be seen.

Grimhilda suddenly realised that Jaymar was not at her side. She turned and looked all around. She couldn’t see him. She then saw one of the crewmen just ahead of her pushing his way through the crowd. She reached out and grabbed his arm. “Have you seen Jaymar?”  He just shrugged his shoulders and continued.

Grimhilda turned around and started back towards the boat. She hoped her worst fears were not true. Then she bumped into the other crewman.

“Have you seen my son? Jaymar.”

He tried to push past her, but she was insistent. “The lad was upset at not sailing. I saw him run up ahead.” He didn’t look at her directly. He pushed past, leaving her wondering.

Grimhilda looked back in the direction of the boat. There were too many people, she had no hope of seeing Jaymar. She turned and looked after the crewman as he pushed his way through the crowd. ‘Was he telling me the truth?’ She thought.

She walked to the edge of the wharf and looked at the last boat heading to the ship. She strained her eyes to see if she could recognise her son. Nothing, the boat was now too far away. She turned and started along the wharf again. Jaymar must be somewhere up ahead.

The rowers were pulling hard and the boat was making good speed. Now there was only a short distance to the Golden Swan. Jaymar just needed for his father and Ambrose to be busy and not notice him as he climbed aboard.

The boat nudged up against the Golden Swan and quickly men were climbing the ladder up her side. Jaymar didn’t want to be last. So he jumped up and pushed his way to the ladder. A couple of archers were a bit cross and complained, but Jaymar was there and he had his foot on the first rung. Before he knew it, he was swinging his legs over the railing. The deck was crowded. Some of the new arrivals were pushing to get through the others and find a spot to sit or put their pack.

Jaymar quickly slipped in between a group and headed for his cabin. He was just opening the door to go below when a hand grasped his shoulder and stopped him. Jaymar turned to see the big toothy grin of Rafeeq.

“Didn’t you go ashore?”

“Rafeeq, please don’t tell anyone. I really want to go to Gymbala.” He pleaded with his eyes and Rafeeq just released his grip.

“Ambrose will be pissed and your father. Eeek. Well, I hope you don’t get a hiding.”

Rafeeq then waved his hand to signal that Jaymar could go below. He didn’t hesitate. To his disappointment, his cabin was full. He squeezed in and found a corner to sit. The archers in his cabin didn’t seem to take any notice of him.

The sun had finally broken over the horizon. Ambrose and Rosalina had positioned themselves at the rear of the ship and now everyone was on-board they started to command the wind.

All the crew and some of the archers were on the lines and in the rigging with full sails at the ready. Raum was at the helm, yelling orders to all that were in earshot.

The breeze grew and soon a strong wind could be seen on the water. Then it hit the Golden Swan and she lurched forward. The sails filled and the shipped started to move.

Captain Courtney, leader of the archers, approached Raum and stood watching the sails for a while, then he asked. “What speed can she manage?”

“Normally with good seas and a fair wind. 12 knots. Today who knows?”

“Is there a point at which the sails won’t hold?” The captain inquired.

“Yes. Master Ambrose and the Elemental will not do this all the time. Once we get to a good cruising speed they just need to nudge us along every so often.” Raum indicated with his head toward Ambrose and Rosalina.

“How many archers did you bring?” Raum surveyed the deck of men.

“I have two hundred of our best.” The captain replied proudly.

“Great. The Golden Swan is bursting at the seams. It’s going to be a tight journey. I hope we don’t hit any storms on the way over.”

“My men will cope.” The captain turned and walked towards Ambrose.

“Captain. How are your men settling in?” Ambrose asked as the captain approached.

“They are Pukavan archers. They will not complain.” He paused and acknowledged Rosalina with a slight nod of his head.

“What is your plan, once we arrive in Gymbala?” The captain inquired.

“I think the attack will come from the foothills to the South-east. Best to have all your archers on the walls and towers facing that direction.” Ambrose replied.

“What of the Golden Swan? We could use it as a platform.”

“I don’t want to risk it. The Dark Ones are known for their use of fire. Raum will take the ship well out of harm’s way. Plus, we will fill the ship with women and children, to get them out of the city.” The captain nodded his agreement. The wind was now coming from the right quarter and the ship was sailing under its own power. Both Ambrose and Rosalina relaxed and would save their strength.

The captain then asked. “And what of the Lizard soldiers? How will you deploy them?”

“That I cannot say. Captain. They may not come. If they do, then I think it will be up to their commander to assess where they will be of best use.” The captain didn’t reply, he just looked at Ambrose and then walked away to be with his men.

Grimhilda was frantic. Jaymar was nowhere to be found. She had arrived at the Inn and he was not there.  No one had seen him. She had sent a message to the Palace, asking for help to search for him. She was now looking urgently for the crewmen from the boat. She had tried several Inns and other locations that the crew often frequented, but nothing. They also had disappeared.

Watson an Elemental advisor to the Princess found her. He had a couple of Lancers with him.

“Grimhilda. Princess Sienna has sent me to assist in your search. What will you have us do?”

“Oh, thank you for coming. I don’t know where he could have gone. I originally thought of the Inn, where we had been staying. But now I am at a loss.” Grimhilda was sounding desperate and tired.

“Can you please go to the wharf and ask anyone if they saw him and then work your way back to the Inn.  I will continue searching places along the waterfront.” Watson nodded his understanding. Grimhilda added. “Thank you so much for helping.” She then turned and hurried away.

The Keepers Secret – Ambrose meets an Ancient and enters the Maze

Sailing to Pukavan

A new day had dawned and the Golden Swan was making good headway towards Pukavan.  Due to Jaymar’s efforts, they had sailed away from Gymbala without any other issue. Raum was on deck reflecting with Topol. “We were lucky to load that cargo so quickly and get away.”

Topol didn’t answer, he just nodded.

“We’ll not be going back there for a while.  The next trip we might have to go as far as Falsbrook.”

Topol commented. “Is that wise, considering there are Centurions there. They will be on the lookout for the Golden Swan.”

“Yes, I know, but we may have to risk it to remain viable. We would not be able to take Jaymar, that’s for certain.”  Topol nodded again in agreement.

At that moment, Jaymar appeared on deck and came over to his father. “Dad, when do we get to Pukavan?  Ambrose will want to know what happened.”

“Tomorrow, I know you cannot wait to tell him how you moved the ship. I’m sure that word of the Volkmire disaster would have reached Pukavan by now. Plus, I am sure he will welcome any first-hand news.”

Jaymar turned and ran to the foredeck picking up his cudgel. He would practice his combat moves for a while.

Falsbrook

In the end, Pryborg had decided not to stay in Falsbrook. There was nothing for him to do there. He wanted to get firsthand information as to what happened at Volkmire.

After listening to Centurion Issatoro describe his understanding of the situation and being told that he would be used to patrol one of the South roads, Pryborg had agreed to assist and go South that day, but he had no intention of doing Prince Jarl’s bidding or being ordered around by Issatoro. Once on his way he had decided to keep going directly to Volkmire.

Outside Pukavan

The Lancers and the Princess had stopped for a break. Commander Prahid had ordered a scouting party to go ahead to the cave dwellings. Udolf and Fineen had agreed to go as well. Nasrald kept his distance from the rest.  The Princess and Ambrose had found a tree that offered good shade to sit under and chat.

After some small talk, Ambrose asked. “What do you want out of these talks?”

She looked at him sideways. “Peace, of course.”

“It will be a hard sell to your people.”

“We don’t have to have them living amongst us.  We just need to stop killing each other.” She stated.

“Are you prepared to concede any territory?” He probed.

“What, give up land we have fought hard for generations to secure?  Not likely.”

Ambrose pressed the point. “But you have taken their homeland. The best land, I might add and pushed them into marginal territory.”

The Princess counted with. “My ancestors tried to build a settlement in peace and all they got was hostility. No negotiations or attempts to come to some arrangement.  They just attacked us and have continued to do so.”

“So, why do you think they now want to negotiate?”

“I don’t know, but I am willing to find out and see what eventuates.”

Command Prahid approached the couple. “A scout has returned. It looks to be clear at the moment. No sign of any Lizards.”

Ambrose asked. “Did Udolf or Fineen have anything to report?”

“The scouts did mention that they were more than helpful, but no specific message from them.”

Ambrose searched Prahid face for any clue. Prahid continued. “Your Highness, it is time to go.”

The Princess and Ambrose both went to their horses and all the remaining Lancers mounted up.  Nasrald was also ready and he walked up to be at Ambrose’s side. Commander Prahid gave the order to move and the group set off for the cave dwelling.

Outside Lockmort

Kamboro and a small party of Lizard soldiers were on their way to the meeting.  They each rode on a lizard beast.  The lizard beasts ran on four legs and had a long tail.  The beasts also had a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth.  These animals were battle trained and fought alongside their rider.

Brax was amongst the party and was riding alongside his leader.

“Our party is too small. The Lancers will bring a large force to protect their Princess.”

Kamboro replied. “The Princess would be foolish to bring a large force. The message was clear, but I have taken some precautions.”

Brax didn’t push for an explanation and remained silent. They rode on for several hours when a scout came riding towards the group.

The scout pulled up alongside Kamboro. “Master. The Lancers have been scouting the area.  There is no sign yet of the Princess.”

Kamboro asked. “Are the others in place and well hidden?”

“Yes, Master.” The scout licked his lips.

Kamboro then issued him an order. “Return to your men and stay hidden. I want no mistakes. This is a meeting, not a battle. You only come out if you see the agreed signal from me. Go.”

The scout snarled in response and then rode off.

Kamboro turned to the rest of his party. “This is a meeting to start negotiations. I don’t want any of you being drawn into a fight.  Even if the Lancers taunt us.  We are better than that. I chose you individually for this mission. Don’t let me down.” He then urged his beast forward.

Cave Dwelling

Commander Prahid had set up guards all over the caves, but he didn’t have enough men.  Princess Sienna and Ambrose were in place waiting for the Lizard leader to arrive.

Fineen, with her keen eyesight, spotted movement long before anyone else.  She had also noticed some other Lizardmen up behind the caves and had informed Ambrose quietly.  He knew that Kamboro would take some precautions and just hoped it wasn’t a trap.

Fineen eventually informed Prahid. “Commander; The Lizardmen approach.” She pointed in their direction.

Prahid tensed and shouted to his men. “Heads up. They are coming.”

Kamboro and his men pulled up in front of the cave dwelling. He ordered his men. “You stay here and wait.” He dismounted and signalled to Brax to follow.

They walked up the slope to the main cave.  Nasrald was there and he walked forward to greet his uncle.

“Uncle, the Princess has come in good faith.  I hope you have done the same.” Kamboro nodded and walked up into the cave. He was met by Commander Prahid and a couple of Lancers.

“Hand over your weapons.” Prahid commanded.

The Princess came forward from the back of the cave and interrupted. “That won’t be necessary. We have our weapons and I trust him.”

Ambrose was also at her side. “Welcome Kamboro. It has been a long time.”  The two shook hands and then Kamboro spoke to Sienna.

“Your Highness, I am surprised to see you here. I had hoped against all hope that this day would come. My people and yours are sworn enemies, but I hope that you and I are here to change that.”

Princess Sienna gestured to Kamboro to come further into the cave. A table and some benches had been pulled together, so they could be seated. The Princess sat on one side and Kamboro took his place opposite. Commander Prahid stood behind his Princess and Brax behind his leader. Ambrose stood to one side with Nasrald. Udolf and Fineen stood near the door just in case.

They all knew the negotiations would take time and would not be straightforward.  These were two sworn enemies that had been killing each other for generations. So the talks began. For an hour, neither would budge on give up territory to the other.

Finally, after many hours discussing many topics, Kamboro raised the issue of trade. “We could open a trade route for you. This would allow travel by land to Gymbala and beyond.” He suggested. The Princess countered by saying. “We can trade by sea.”

Kamboro stood up and said. “Well, that will be the point at which we must end today’s meeting. In future, Brax my advisor will negotiate on my behalf until we have something worth agreeing on.” He nodded towards Brax who bowed slightly.

“I have enjoyed our meeting and frank discussions, Your Highness, but for now it is goodbye.”

Princess Sienna also stood and offered her hand in friendship.  Commander Prahid tensed as the Lizard leader reached out with his hand and shook the Princess’s hand firmly. He then bowed his head slightly, turned and left the cave.  Brax hurried after him.

Princess Sienna ordered Prahid. “Make sure he leaves safely.  No mistakes.”

The Commander bowed and quickly left the cave following Brax.

Nasrald approached the Princess. “Your Highness, it may seem as nothing has progressed today, but the fact that you met with Kamboro is significant.  I too must now leave. I will join my uncle and try to win over our people to the notion of a truce with the Lancers.”

“Thank you Nasrald, I hope we meet again.”

Nasrald bowed his head and then looked at Ambrose and gave him a slight nod. Ambrose responded with. “By the Elements. Go well, my friend.”

Nasrald turned and left the cave to follow Kamboro back to Lockmort.

Commander Prahid re-entered the cave shortly after. “Your Highness, we must leave quickly it is getting dark and I don’t know what the Lizards will do if we stay here.”

The Princess made her way to the door and turned to see if Ambrose was coming. “Ambrose?” She enquired.

“Your Highness, I will stay with my two friends a while. There is something I want to check in one of the caves. Plus, we can watch your back, on your return to Pukavan. We shall follow shortly.”

“As you wish. Commander, lead the way.” Both Sienna and Prahid, with all the other Lancers left to return to Pukavan.

Fineen asked. “Did I miss something or was that a waste of time?”

“Not at all, Fineen, it was a good start.”

“But they agreed on nothing.”

“Correct. They both now know the others position and can go away and think about what they might be willing to concede.”

Udolf gave a low groan and commented. “The Lizards are negotiating from a position of weakness and the Princess knows it.”

“We shall see my good friend.” Said Ambrose. “Now let’s go and investigate the crack in the back of these caves.” He strode out of the door and turned into a corridor that led into the back caves.

The three of them stood in front of a crack in the back of the deepest cave dwelling. It ran from the roof to the floor and was widest near the floor. At its widest point, it was no wider than Ambrose upper arm. So he could not get his head inside to have a look.

Ambrose knelt down to peer into the crack, but it was just a dark hole. Cool air blew out of the crack, Ambrose could feel it on his face.

“I wonder where the wind is coming from, it’s quite strong.” Ambrose stood up and stepped back looking up and down the crack.

“What is your interest in this crack?” Growled Udolf. “I would prefer for us to be gone from here.”

Ambrose commented. “It’s not the crack, but the wind and I thought I heard something last time that sounded unusual.”

Just then they all three jumped to alert as there was a sound. Udolf and Fineen drew their weapons. It was a low moan that made the cave rumble and resonate.

“What is that?” Whispered Fineen.

Ambrose shook his head sideways indicating he didn’t know.

Ambrose then knelt down slowly again to peer into the crack. Suddenly a massive hand, which looked like the rock itself, smashed through the crack and grabbed Ambrose by the arm. The crack had grown big enough for Ambrose to fit through and the hand pulled him in just as quickly as it had smashed through.

Fineen, as nimble as she was, could not grab Ambrose in time. He was gone. She was however small enough to fit easily through the crack and leapt after him. Udolf, on the other hand, was too big. He smashed his shoulder against the rock, trying to break away some rock, to make the hole bigger, but it was in vain.

Udolf heard scuffling noises and he thought he heard Fineen call out for Ambrose.  Then there was silence. He picked up some of the fallen pieces of rock and started smashing them against the wall.  He worked furiously, but made slow progress.

Fineen found herself in a large tunnel, once through the crack. Her keen eyesight adjusted quickly and allowed her to see quite well in the dark. She saw a large figure lopping away with Ambrose held under one enormous arm. She called out. “Ambrose.” Then sprinted after them.

She was very quick, but she was not making any ground on the creature. Its big strides propelled it very fast along the tunnel. Suddenly, it stopped and turned to face her. It threw Ambrose against the wall and stood ready to fight. Fineen slowed to halt several metres from the creature and stood still, her bow was drawn ready to shoot.  She then realised her arrows would be no match for this rock-like creature.

Ambrose stirred and sat up. The creature was about to lunge at Fineen when Ambrose shouted. “STOP! I am Ambrose and we are friends. We mean you no harm.”

The creature seemed to slouch its shoulders and relax.  It then slowly turned and sat down against the opposite wall to where Ambrose sat. The three remained silent for what seemed to be a long while. Fineen didn’t dare move and Ambrose looked a bit winded or even wounded.

Finally, the creature spoke. It was a low rumble of a voice which shook the tunnel.

“You, Ambrose. I know the name. The older ones. The old father had mentioned your name.”

Fineen couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She sat down where she was and listened.

“Long past the old father met you. You asked about an animal friend. He sent you away.”

Ambrose replied. “Yes, that was me.” Fineen was astounded at what she heard.

“My friend was a wolf and he had been running with a pack near your old father’s cave.” He paused. “I had thought your kind had gone, left these places.”

The rock man looked at Fineen and then at Ambrose.

“The old fathers moved us deep into the Maze.  We are few and soon to be no more.”

Udolf, had finally smashed a hole large enough for his shoulders to fit through and he now squeezed through the crack and ran down the tunnel. It didn’t take him long to reach Fineen, who quickly stood up and stopped him.

“Wait. He is not hurt.” Meaning Ambrose. She motioned for Udolf to sit down next to her and listen.

The rock creature had seen and heard Udolf approaching, but had taken no interest. It just sat slumped against the wall.

Ambrose asked. “You speak of being no more. What does that mean?”

“We have no new ones amongst us.  I am the last to come from the earth’s womb.” The creature paused. “I am Cargan and I am looking for the last old father, Halvor. He has been tormented for an age and now has left us.” He uttered a low moan which shook the walls. The creature then fell silent and looked down at its feet. The silence was eerie sitting in the tunnel with hardly any light. There was some dim lighting coming from further along the tunnel.

Ambrose’s eyes had come accustomed to the dark and he looked at Fineen and Udolf sitting just a short distance away. Ambrose asked Cargan. “Can we help you find Halvor?”

After another lengthy pause, Cargan looked up and then stood up. His head almost hitting the ceiling.

“I have walked the entire Maze. He is gone. I must return to the others.” He turned and started walking away.

Ambrose stood up and called out to Cargan. “Did Halvor have a tooth necklace?” Cargan stopped in his tracks and turned. “Yes. He said it troubled him. He wanted to be rid of it.”

“Where would he go to rid himself of such a thing?”

“I don’t know.” Cargan shrugged his enormous shoulders.

“Is there a place Halvor would only go if he was desperate or as you say tormented?”

“I have been there. We do not speak of it. There was no sign of him.”

“Could you take me there? You may have missed something. We could look for you.” Ambrose insisted.

Cargan seemed to be wrestling with the idea and finally said. “I will look once more and you can follow.” Cargan turned to set off along the tunnel.

Ambrose called out after him. “Can my friends join us?”

“If you wish. Stay close and don’t take any turns.  The Maze will swallow you.”

Ambrose quickly signalled to his two friends to follow, as he took off after Cargan.  They had to run to keep up with the rock creature. Cargan seemed to know the Maze like someone would know their own town. He turned down different tunnels without hesitation and never wavered in his stride.

For what seemed like hours they followed Cargan with no rest.  There seemed to always be a dim light or glow in the tunnels. This allowed them to see well enough.  They passed many intersections with other tunnels. At times they climbed and at other times they descended. Finally, Cargan came to a halt and turned to face the three followers. They all stopped just in front of Cargan. Ambrose was puffing, but Fineen and Udolf were breathing normally. Both run with such ease and seem to be able to run all day without tiring.

Cargan said. “The tunnel leads to a chamber with steps. I have gone up the steps to the opening, but I will not go down.” He then turned and walked slowly ahead.  Ambrose and the other two followed at a brisk walk.  They then noticed, up ahead a large opening in the tunnel where Cargan had stopped at the entrance.

Ambrose stepped up alongside Cargan and peered into the chamber. Udolf and Fineen stepped up on the other side of Cargan. Ambrose whispered to the group. “I think this is the Well of Darkness.”

Cargan emitted a low rumble that made the walls shudder.

Ambrose said to Cargan. “You can stay here and we will venture down to see what we can find. Maybe Halvor went that way.” Cargan didn’t answer. He stepped back and sat down against the tunnel wall.

Ambrose signalled for Fineen to go first. “Your eyes are better than ours.” Fineen nodded and she lightly started down the stepped.

As they proceeded down, they notice a reddish glow growing stronger from below. Suddenly Fineen signalled to stop. Ambrose stepped down onto the step beside her and asked. “What can you see?”

“The floor of the Well is about 400 metres below. There are things moving around on the floor, plus, I can see a couple of shapes, which look like they are flying.”

“The Dark Terror.  This is their home.” Ambrose commented.  Just then a dark shape flew up past them and all three fell back against the wall. Udolf had his sword out in a flash. Ambrose raised his arm in caution as they waited.  Nothing happened, the creature had disappeared up towards the Well’s opening.

Ambrose whispered. “It’s too dangerous out here on the steps.  Fineen, you go on alone and find out anything you can.  Udolf and I will return to the tunnel and Cargan. We will wait for your return.”

She nodded her understanding. Just as she started to descend Ambrose added. “Two hours and I will come looking for you.”

She was gone in a flash and so quiet. Ambrose quickly turned and started back up the steps. Udolf was right behind him.

They sat in the entrance to the tunnel waiting for her return. Several times a dark shape flashed by the entrance.  Udolf was on full alert. Ambrose, who had been sitting next to Cargan, got up and stood beside Udolf at the entrance. “She should have been back by now.”

Udolf moaned and then said softly. “She comes.”

Sure enough, within seconds Ambrose could see a shadowy figure leaping up the steps. Fineen slipped into the tunnel and they all sat down next to Cargan. Fineen took her time before speaking.

She whispered softly. “Don’t make me go down there ever again. It saps my soul.”

Ambrose replied. “I am sorry Fineen. What can you tell us?”

“There is a horde of them down there.  There is another huge cavern and they have caves on all sides.  The caves must be their homes.  There are a lot of dead animals and a few people’s dead bodies littered all over the floor.”  She paused to regain her composure. “There was a buzz amongst them. Like they were all happy and celebrating something.”

“I imagine that would be because of their triumph at Volkmire.” Ambrose commented.

Fineen nodded and continued. “I couldn’t get close enough to anyone, but I did overhear a group talking in one of the caves.”

Udolf stood up and looked at the chamber entrance as if he felt a presence.  They all tensed up, but then Udolf crouched down again and seemed to relax a bit.  Fineen continued. “The group were talking about how they now had food for many moons. They commented about the raid on Volkmire and how easy it seemed.  Then one said something about another attack.  This time it would be a smaller raiding party. They didn’t need more food, they just wanted to spread more fear.”

Ambrose asked. “Anything about Halvor?”

Fineen looked a Cargan. “In another cave, I heard someone say something about the lava pool not being the same after the fall. That’s all. Sorry, Cargan.”

Ambrose looked at Cargan and said. “Maybe Halvor fell, but we cannot be sure.  Let’s move back away from the entrance and consider what to do next.”

They all stood and walked what seems to be a good distance back before Cargan stopped and once again slumped down against the side of the tunnel. Ambrose had been thinking, what to do next?

He now proposed a plan. “To really find out something concrete we need to speak to one of them.”

Udolf cautioned him, in his normal low, gravelly voice. “That is very risky.”

Fineen asked. “How?”

“We catch one.  I noticed several times, while waiting for your return, that they fly up and down the Well.” He paused then added. “We just have to work out how to catch one as it flies past.”

They all looked puzzled as Ambrose tried to explain. “I can use Air to lift Fineen out into the Well and she could catch one.”

“But won’t our combined weight be an issue?” Fineen exclaimed.

Ambrose continued. “The steps circle around the Well.  I propose that Fineen climb up so that she is on the opposite side to the entrance of this tunnel.  You will be higher up. When I see one flying up I can signal you.  You then jump out and catch it and I will use Air to help guide you across to us and then Udolf can catch you both.”

“I can tell you have put a lot of thought into this.  Are you crazy?” Fineen was not convinced.

“Fineen, you have the best eyes for seeing in the dark. You are nimble and light. Jumping from above us gives me a chance to help you glide down and across the Well.”

Udolf decided to comment. “Dangerous, but not bad.”

Fineen was reluctant and they spent the next hour arguing back and forth about the dangers and possible alternatives. In the end, Fineen finally agreed. “I must be mad to listen to you, but I think you’re right.  It’s our best chance of catching one. If that’s what you want us to do.”

They now discussed the plan again in more detail.

Demarco’s Family Cave

Demarco and his family were uneasy after the return of Calzar and his army.  Food was plentiful and any dissenters or opposition to Calzar continuing the raids had quickly disappeared. Umbooka had reported back to Demarco. He had described the carnage and the ease with which Calzar’s army had crushed the defenders and destroyed the city.

Demarco’s direct family group consisted of his partner and their son. Plus, his partner’s older brother and his partner and their son and daughter. All seven now lived in Demarco’s cave and seldom went out. It was night, Ishant was Demarco’s nephew and he now asked Ishant to fly up to the top of the Well to see if the Day Walkers were still there.

Demarco’s brother in law, Alikara and he had already discussed and agreed that Ishant would draw less attention than if either of them flew up the Well. After some final encouraging words, Ishant left the cave and made his way along a ledge, which ran from their cave to the main cavern. No one was taking any notice of his movements, but he paused every so often to look around the Well to make sure.

He was nervous, but he was a warrior and knew that his father and uncle were depending on him.  When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he took one last look around and then leapt into the air. With a couple of quick flaps of his wings, he moved quickly upwards towards the top of the Well.

Fineen, was in position and she was watching keenly down into the Well. They had decided that Cargan would be a better option to catch Fineen and her prey. Ambrose and Cargan had positioned themselves just inside the tunnel, keeping out of sight from the Well. Udolf was crouched a few steps below. He also was keeping a keen eye down into the Well.

Suddenly, he saw the shape. It was moving quickly. Udolf sounded a short, low whistle as a signal to Fineen. Her great hearing picked up the signal, however, she had already seen the shape flying up towards her.

Without a second thought, she leapt out into the dark. Ambrose immediate started his invocation to draw Air up the Well. Ishant was totally surprised when a shape came out of nowhere and grabbed him around the shoulders. Their combined weight knocked him off balance and his wings collapsed. He couldn’t fly.  He immediately struck at the creature, trying to get it off him.

Fineen, had a firm grip around Ishant’s shoulders and she had now managed to lock her legs around his lower body. The air rushed past them as they were falling fast, but the wind was rising with a force that seemed to slow their fall.  The momentum with which Fineen had struck Ishant had pushed them across the Well, closer to the steps on the other side.

Cargan was waiting and he reached out with his huge arms and caught the two of them. He clamped a vice-like grip around both of them and quickly stepped back into the tunnel.

Fineen, had managed to get one of her hands over Ishant’s mouth to try and stop him from calling out. He squealed a bit, but the sound was muffled. Quickly they gathered around Cargan.  Ambrose helped Fineen extract herself from Cargan’s grip without giving Ishant any chance of escape. Udolf stood guard at the tunnel entrance.

Ambrose spoke to the Dark One. “Don’t struggle or he will hurt you. We only want to question you and get some answers. Then we will let you go unharmed.”

Ishant was struggling, biting and scratching, anything he could do to break free, but he found that he was biting and scratching at stone. He nearly broke a tooth on the Cargan’s huge hand, which was now covering his mouth.

He slowly realised there was no escape and he calmed down.

Ambrose repeated himself. “Do you understand me? Don’t struggle. We just want some answers. Don’t call out or he will hurt you. He will release his hand if you will answer my questions. Will you cooperate?”

Finally, Ishant nodded his head in agreement and Ambrose signalled Cargan to remove his hand. Cargan slowly release his hand from Ishant’s mouth and the Dark One immediate spat at Ambrose and bared his teeth.

“I will not tell you anything Day Walker.”

“Why are you flying to the top of the Well?” Ambrose ignored him.

“We are always flying up and down.  It is our home.”

“You seem to have a purpose. You were flying faster than some of the others.”

“I am a superior flyer than most and I am a warrior. I will kill you if you release me.” Ishant was proud of himself.

“I’m sure you are better than most. So that’s why you were chosen for a task.  What was that task?” Ambrose bantered with him.

“My uncle chose me because he would have drawn attention from the guard, then Calzar would want answers.”

Immediately Ishant knew he had said too much. “I will tell you no more.”

“Who is Calzar? Is he your leader?” Ambrose continued to probe.

Ishant just shook his head and indicated that he would not talk anymore.

Fineen snarled and suggested. “Break his wing.  See how brave he is when he cannot fly.” Ishant looked alarmed as Ambrose was starting to nod in agreement.

Ishant felt the vice-like grip tighten on his body and the other rock like hand took hold of one of his wings. Fear racked his body. He needed to fly. “Stop. What can I tell you?”

“When is the next raid?” Pressed Ambrose, they didn’t have a lot of time.

“I don’t know.” Ishant snarled. Cargan tightened his grip on the wing.

“Stop.” He called out again. “Soon I think. I am not part of the raiding party so I don’t know.”

“I thought you were a warrior and would be part of the raid.” Countered Ambrose.

“My uncle and my Father would not let us go. We stayed in our cave.”

“Why?”

“My uncle Demarco, is Calzar’s brother and they are in disagreement.” Ishant paused. “Demarco doesn’t like these raids organised by the Day Walkers.”

“Are the Day Walkers Elementals?” Ambrose was surprised and kept pressing now he had the Dark One talking.

“Yes. I think so. They bring the dark thunderstorm clouds and we can then raid during the Day.”

Ambrose commented to Fineen. “That makes sense as the reports mention a thunderstorm and I sensed Elemental power.”

Ambrose turned back to Ishant. “Why does your Uncle disagree with your leader?”

“I am not sure.  They have always been angry with each other. Demarco believes that we shouldn’t attack the Day Walkers just for killing.  We have only ever defended ourselves as we try and collect food to bring back to our homes. The easiest food to take, are the animals kept by the Day Walkers.”

This revelation made everything clear to Ambrose. He always had this idea that the Dark Terror could inflict much more death than they do.  They were out to capture food not kill.

“So your leader, Calzar now wants to attack and kill Day Walkers. Do you know why?”

“I am just a young warrior, I don’t get told anything about raids or plans.”

“But your uncle is the brother of your leader. Surely he talks about what is happening.”

“I hear things, but I don’t know everything that is going on. My uncle and father are planning to leave the Well and get away from Calzar before he kills us.”

“Which city is the target for the next raid?” Fineen interrupted.

“I am not sure. I think they said a small city by the sea.”

Ambrose thought for a while, then changed his questioning. “Have you seen a creature like this before?” He pointed at Cargan.

There was a long pause, then finally Ishant nodded his head in the affirmative.

“When? What happened?” Ambrose was insistent and Cargan’s grip tightened again.

“Stop.” Ishant implored. “A moon cycle ago. It fell from above.”

“Tell us what happened? Why did he fall?” Urged Ambrose.

“I was on the floor of the Well. We saw nothing other than its fall from above and landed in the lava pool.”

Ambrose looked up at Cargan. “Please don’t hurt him. We can do nothing now for the old father.”

Cargan uttered a low growling noise, but relaxed his grip. Ishant thought of escape, but knew that the grip was still too strong.

“What happened when it fell into the lava?” Ambrose continued.

“It was engulfed. Lava went everywhere. Some others were killed. Then it was gone. Let me go. I will be noticed if I don’t get back soon.”

Fineen noticed a change in Ambrose. He looked lost or disheartened at the news. Ambrose regained his composure. “My name is Ambrose. Tell your Uncle, that Ambrose will help if he wishes. Tell any animal you find that you have a message for Ambrose and I will get it. Udolf, move back from the entrance.”

He turned back again to Ishant and said to Cargan. “You can release him now and we shall go. The old father has gone. We must return from where we came.”

Cargan nodded his head and slowly release his grip.  Udolf and Fineen stood at the ready with their weapons drawn.

As soon as Ishant felt the grip weaken to a certain point, he broke free and dashed for the entrance. Leapt into the Well and flew straight down.

“Quickly, we have to move from here. Cargan lead the way.”

Cargan turned and headed away from the entrance. Ambrose and his friends followed at a run.

Ishant landed on the steps a couple of hundred metres below the tunnel and regained his breath. What had just happened? He had never come that close to Day Walkers before. What was he to tell his father and Uncle?

He then remembered his original task. Fly up to see if the Day Walkers were still there. What was he to do? Go up or back down. He only had a short time before the guard would be doing the normal patrol up and down the Well. He regained his composure and took off up the Well towards the top. He flew as far across the Well from the side of the tunnel and was soon landing on the lip of the Well.

The night air was very cold compared to the Well. He quickly looked all around.  Nothing, but he had to make sure.  So he leapt into the sky and did one loop, surveying the area around the top of the Well.  There was nothing. He turned and swooped down quickly and entered the Well at speed.  He hoped he didn’t meet the guard coming the other way.

Ishant landed on the steps near the floor of the Well and quickly looked around to see if anyone noticed his decent. He took one last look, then leapt into the air to fly over to the ledge near his father’s cave. Suddenly, he was hit from above and he crashed down onto the floor.

A guard landed next to him. “What are you doing? Why aren’t you in your cave with your weak father?” Snarled the guard.

“I was just stretching my wings, as we have been in the cave for a long time. I need to flex my wings on a regular basis as I am still young and growing.”

The guard snorted. “You are like your father and Uncle. Weakling. Get out of my sight and don’t fly out here again, while I am on guard.”

The guard gave Ishant a kick and then leapt into the air flying up into the Well. Ishant recoiled from the kick, but was quickly on his feet and into the air. Landing on the ledge near his Uncle’s cave.  He quickly moved along the ledge and in through the entrance.

His Uncle and father greeted him and they quickly directed him further into the cave to hear his report.

Demarco was angry. “You were away for a long time. What took you so long? Were you seen?”

“A guard knocked me down as I was returning, but he suspected nothing.”

“Are you sure?” His father was not convinced.

“I told him I was just flexing my wings.  That we have been crammed up in here for too long.”

“Ok.” Demarco wanted answers. “What of the Day Walkers?”

“There are none at the top. I scanned around the edge and saw nothing.” Ishant dared not tell his father about his encounter, at least not yet.

“Good. We must go now.” Ordered Demarco.

The others in the cave had all gathered around to hear Ishant.  Now they all looked at each other with mixed feelings. Alikara spoke to everyone. “We have planned this for a long time. We cannot stay. Calzar will have us killed if your Uncle and I continue to defy him.”

Demarco added. “It will be daybreak soon above. We only have a short time in which to make our escape to a cave not far from the Well. We must time it so that we arrive right on sunrise.  This will give us the best chance of not being followed. The guard will be returning from his round. Are we all ready?”

Everyone in the group nodded agreement. Umbooka had joined the group in the cave.

Demarco turned to him. “Are you sure you will not come?”

“No, Demarco. I can be of some use to you, by staying and then I can keep you informed of what Calzar is planning.” Demarco just nodded and addressed the others.

“So, we leave one at a time. Fly up to just below the lip of the Well and wait. I will be the last. If I don’t come within the time agreed you must not wait.” He looked at Alikara for confirmation. His brother in law nodded.

Demarco turned to his partner Delamere. “Be brave and help our child to escape.” She nodded agreement and they embraced.

Ishant interrupted. “I want to go first. If necessary I will distract the guard.”

Alikara grasped his son on the shoulder. “You have done well son, but no. I will see you at the top.”

Alikara left the cave followed by his partner.  Alikara was to stand watch to allow the others to get away. His partner flew up first. Their daughter left next.  Ishant then followed.

Finally, all had left the cave except Demarco and Umbooka. They embraced, then Demarco picked up a sack with his provisions and left the cave. He crept along the ledge leading to the steps. He stopped occasionally to listen and look about for anyone that might be watching. He joined Alikara on the steps and told him to go. He waited for a short while, then he too jumped into the air and started his ascent up the Well. He kept to one side of the Well which was the furthest from the guard post.

Demarco landed on the steps just below the lip of the Well. The others were all crouched against the wall waiting for him. Demarco asked Alikara. “Anyone above us?”

“Not that we have seen.”

“The guard should be doing a sweep of the top any moment now.” Commented Demarco. Everyone sat patiently hoping not to be seen.

The guard was meant to fly up and down the Well on a regular basis. At the top, they had to fly out over the lip and do a quick sweep of the area to ensure nothing was approaching then return down the Well. The guard, which Ishant had encountered earlier, was now flying up past the waiting group. He had his eyes on the top and flashed past them without looking. Demarco hoped the guard did not linger too long above, as the time was running out. Daybreak was not far away.

It seemed like an age, waiting for the guard to return on his way back down the Well. The group was getting restless. Suddenly Demarco signalled to the other to be still.  The guard was on his way back down.  He was circling slowly around the Well as he glided down. Both Alikara and Demarco reached for their weapons. The guards’ circling would bring him close to the steps and surely he would see them.

As the guard was nearing, Demarco tensed his body ready to strike, but to all their relief the guard glided past seemingly without noticing them. Quickly, Demarco went to the edge of the steps and looked down. The guard was well below them now and still gliding slowly down.

He turned and signalled to the rest. As one they all jumped into the air. A couple of flaps of their wings and they all cleared the lip of the Well. The group climbed quickly into the dawn sky.  The night was quickly becoming day, as the dawn spread across the land. They had to hurry.

Demarco raced out in front of the group, leading the way. Alikara was at the back of the group making sure they all kept flying as fast as possible. It was hard going for their youngest, as everyone had to carry some provisions. Ishant flew alongside his sister and gave her encouragement.

Demarco finally signalled the group to start heading down toward the ground. The night sky was now lit up with the dawn sunrise. Time was running out quickly. Then they saw it a dark opening in the side of a mountain. Demarco urged them all to fly faster.  Working his wings hard, he raced toward the cave.

He didn’t hesitate at the opening, but flew straight in and toward the back of the cave.  The opening was large enough for several to fly across together, but it quickly narrowed to only wide enough for one before once again opening up into a large cavern. Demarco’s eye quickly adjusted to the lack of light. He swung around and did a quick swoop of the cavern before heading back to the narrow section near the opening.  He landed and waited for the others.

One by one they flew in over his head. Ishant and the youngest flew through almost holding each other.  Where was Alikara? Demarco was about to fly back to the main entrance when Alikara came crashing down near his feet. Demarco and the others quickly rushed to his side.

“Alikara are you ok?” Demarco turned Alikara over to see his bright eyes greet him.

“Just made it.” Alikara whispered.  Smoke was coming from the tips of his wings and there looked to be a small hole in the membrane of one of his wings.

Alikara’s partner was by his side quickly and she reached into the pack she had carried and brought out a small sack of something.  She opened it and used her hand to scoop up a small amount of a gooey substance. She then tenderly applied it to his damaged wing.

She looked up at Demarco. “He will recover.”

“Good.  We have all made it.” He turned to the others. “We will rest at the back of the cave. Ishant you can be the first watch.”

Ishant hesitated before speaking to the group. “I have something to tell you.”

They all stopped and listened. “The reason I was away for longer than expected, was because I was captured.”

“What? Explain.” Roared Demarco.

“A giant rock creature, a cat likely creature, a massive wolf-like creature and a Day Walker trapped me on my way up to the lip.” He paused to gauge Demarco’s reaction. He just snarled. “Go on.”

“They trapped me and held me. The rock creature was so strong and it had enormous hands. He held me so I could not move.”

His father asked. “What did they want?”

“They asked about the raid and when was the next one. They wanted to know which town. I couldn’t tell them as I don’t know.”

“What else?” Demanded Demarco.

“They wanted to know about the rock creature that fell into the lava pool. The creature holding me would have broken my wings, if I had not told them.”

“What did you tell them?” Demarco pressed him.

“Just that it fell from above and died.”

“What else?”

“I told them that you were Calzar’s brother and that you and my father were planning on leaving the Well.”

Demarco yelled out in frustration. “You fool. You have endangered all of us. They could have been waiting for us.”

Alikara interrupted. “But they weren’t. We have made our escape.”

Ishant continued. “They didn’t go back to the lip of the Well. They were in one of the tunnels that appear along the steps and they left that way. Also, the Day Walker called himself Ambrose and said that he would help us.”

“What a Day Walker helping the Dark Ones? You fool, he was just making you feel at ease so they could get information from you.”

“But it was after I had told them about us. Just before they let me go, he said ‘Tell any animal you find that you have a message for Ambrose and I will get it.’ I believe him.”

“You should have told us immediately on your return.” Barked Demarco.

Alikara interrupted again. “If he had, we would not have made our escape. We would have hesitated too long or even decided not to leave.” Most of the others nodded in agreement.

Demarco just growled. “We need to rest. Tomorrow we must fly again all night to get as far from the Well as possible.  They will no doubt be out searching for us by then.”

They all moved further into the cave to wait and rest, except Ishant who took up his position as the first watch.

Maze behind the Cave Dwelling

It hadn’t taken them long to return to the Cave Dwelling. Cargan had led the way while the others had to run along behind.  Once again, Ambrose was finding it hard going and was breathing heavily when they came to a stop. Both Fineen and Udolf seemed none the worse for the run.

Cargan slowly lowered his large frame down and sat by the wall. He was expressionless. The others stood around waiting for Ambrose to regain his breath.

Finally, Fineen spoke. “That was interesting. Never spoken to a Dark One before.” Ambrose was looking more worried than his normal self.

“Interesting. Yes. Why would the brother to their leader want to leave? They are very much a collection of family groups and I have never heard of a group separating.” Ambrose observed.

Ambrose turned to Cargan. “Sorry, Cargan it seems that the old father fell into the lava pool at the bottom of the Well.” He then reflected. “It seems like the necklace may also be lost with Halvor.”

“What was the necklace to you?” Asked Fineen.

“That’s a long story. All I will say at this stage, is that one of the old Elemental gems may have been lost forever.” Ambrose looked solemn.

Fineen also observed. “You said you had met the old father. How can that be? How old are you?”

“I’m feeling very old at the moment. Sorry, Fineen I’d rather not talk about it right now.”

The group fell silent as Ambrose’s comments sunk in. His hopes for the reformation of the Council had been dealt a major blow.

Pukavan

The dawn was spreading across the land as Princess Sienna and the Lancers returned to Pukavan. Out in the harbour, the Golden Swan had also arrived.  The crew was lowering the sails and she was already dropping anchor. Raum, Grimhilda and Jaymar stood together at the rail looking at the city as the rising sun shone on its buildings and towers.

“Well, we made good time coming back and we have a good cargo to trade. Let’s see what has been happening while we have been away.” Raum smiled at the two of them and turned to give his crew more orders.

“What happens next?” Asked Jaymar.

“Well, your father will go ashore and arrange to dock at the wharf so we can unload. Also, he will go and see a few merchants and drum up some interest in our cargo.”

Rafeeq came swinging down from the higher rigging and landed on the railing next to Jaymar. “Eeek. What’s happening?”

“Nothing yet. Will Ambrose be coming to greet us?” Jaymar asked his mother.

“I don’t know. I’m sure he will happy to see us back, but coming to greet us. Well, we have to wait and see.”

Jalen flew low overhead through the rigging and called out. “I am going to find Ambrose. Aark. See you later.” He whistled again and started to rise up into the sky heading for the city.

Princess Sienna went straight to her private chambers to freshen up before calling a meeting of her council.

Jalen landed in the main courtyard of the palace and enquired about Ambrose. No one could tell him where Ambrose was. He kept asking and finally he found some Lancers tending their horses. They told him Ambrose and his friends had stayed behind, when they rode back from a cave dwelling in the foothills.

Jalen immediately took off and started flying in the direction they had indicated.  After flying for over an hour Jalen finally spotted three small figures far on the horizon. He swooped down closer to the ground and sped towards them.

Ambrose and his friend’s had left Cargan behind in the tunnel. They had many questions but few answers and Ambrose wanted to get back to Pukavan. He needed to talk to the Princess about her next move. Cargan had told them, that if they came to the tunnel again and just whispered close to the wall. He would hear them and come to meet them.  Once again, he warned them against entering the tunnels on their own. He said his goodbye and strode away down the tunnel.

A whistle sounded above them, Ambrose and his friend looked up to see Jalen glide down. He landed next to them.

“Greetings friend. How was your trip?” Asked Ambrose.

“Aark. Fine. Raum has a good cargo, but we bring alarming news from Gymbala.” They continued toward Pukavan as they talked.

Jalen filled them in on the stories of destruction and terror from Volkmire and all the refugees that have flooded into the town.  Ambrose raised an eyebrow when he heard about their lucky escape from the crowds and how Jaymar has helped.

“I hope he didn’t attract attention from any Elementals.” Ambrose commented then added. “Jalen fly back to Raum and say we will be in Pukavan this afternoon. We will meet at the Inn and catch up on both our adventures.” Jalen said goodbye and took off back to Pukavan. Soon he was landing on the deck of the Golden Swan.

Grimhilda, Jaymar and Rafeeq greeted him.  “Aark. Ambrose will return to the city before nightfall. Where is Raum?”

“He is ashore organising our berth at the wharf.  Then we will start unloading our cargo.” Replied Grimhilda.

“Look. Here he comes.” Called out Jaymar as he ran to the railing.

The Keepers Secret – Ambrose has to flee Falsbrook

Tamplina:

Prince Melville and his son Theodor were in deep discussions in one of the palace meeting rooms when they heard a knocking on the window.  When they looked up there was a messenger bird standing on the ledge outside the window.  Prince Theodor went and opened the window and the messenger bird flew in and landed on the table.

The bird said in a low croaky voice. “Message for Melville.” It then stuck out its leg with a scroll attached.  Melville unfastened the scroll and the bird flew back to the window and sat waiting.

Melville passed the scroll to Theodor once he had read it. “As you can see the message is from a spy, Master Ambrose has hidden in Daarook.  Another two Centurions are on their way and I thought we were rid of them for the time being.  This means that the High Centurion is even more determined to locate the renegade Elemental.”

“Father, how long has Master Ambrose had a spy in Daarook and do we know anything about them?”

“I have no idea, Master Ambrose has been deliberately vague, but I know messages pass between them and this is not the first time I have received one.”

Theodor looked at the messenger bird and asked. “How reliable are these birds?”

“I know they are trained to deliver messages to specific people and that they will not usually allow someone else to take the message from them.  They have been used for hundreds of years and I believe they are effective and loyal.”

“So, what do we do about this latest news?”

“We have several days to think about that. If we get an opportunity to inform Master Ambrose we will.”

An Elemental Fight

Prince Jarl was having his breakfast alone in one of his private chambers when Centurion Issatoro entered.  “Your Highness, excuse my interruption, but I have details concerning Elemental Winslow.”  Jarl waved his hand signalling the Centurion to continue.

“Your Highness, Elemental Winslow is a water Elemental working for Prince Melville of Tamplina, but as you saw, he was wearing the green robe of an Earth Elemental. Our records also indicate he is very old and has a deformity.”

Jarl stopped eating his breakfast and enquired. “What is it?”

“He has a hunch back Your Highness.  Clearly, the man with Elemental Seaghan is not Elemental Winslow.”

“Go an arrest them immediately and I want this Winslow tortured to find out what they are really up to.”  Prince Jarl ordered.  Centurion Issatoro bowed low and left the chamber.

Ambrose was up early as usual and had gone for a walk along the river.  Two of the guards stationed outside the Inn had followed him.  Just as he was returning to the Inn he felt a presence moving in the direction of the Inn.  One of the Centurions was approaching the Inn in a hurry.  Ambrose found Seaghan when he entered the dining room already having a light breakfast.  He grabbed him by the arm and urged him to follow him into the rear of the Inn.  Ambrose spoke as they went. “No time to explain, but we had better make a run for it.  I saw more guards coming along the river and one of the Centurions was with them.”

Seaghan replied. “They could be coming to collect us for the meeting.”

Ambrose pushed on through the Inn. “I don’t think so.”  Their travelling packs and other gear were already stacked by the back-door ready for a quick departure.

Outside they saddled their horses and then walked them out into the back laneway.  Two guards could be seen standing at one end of the lane leading to the river.  They had their backs to Seaghan and Ambrose, but once the horse’s hooves hit the lanes cobblestones the guards turned to see what was making the noise.

A yell rang out in the morning air. “Halt! You there, STOP!”  The guards came running towards them.  Seaghan mounted his horse and while he was not watching, Ambrose sent a blast of air down the lane.  The wind hit the guards and knocked them off their feet.  Ambrose then mounted his horse and they took off in the other direction.  They came to another lane and turned away from the river.

The guards outside the Inn had heard the alarm and rushed around the back to see what was happening.  They found the two guards struggling to their feet and heard the horse’s hooves clattering away up the lane.

Centurion Issatoro felt the surge of Elemental power and he urged the guards forward at a run.  They were still over a kilometre away from the Inn and on foot.  He suddenly sensed a powerful presence moving away from the river.  He knew his colleague would also have felt the same presence and he hoped he would raise the alarm and send word to the city gates to block any escape.

The guards in the lane split up, three took off after the horses and two went inside the Inn to see if anyone were still there.  They found Seaghan’s escort guards coming bleary-eyed from their sleeping quarters and they arrested them.  Another guard took off along the river towards the closest guard house to raise the alarm.  He met Centurion Issatoro and the other guards not far along the river. The Centurion halted his party. “What has happened?”

The guard was out of breath but managed to speak to the Centurion. “Your Eminence, the two Elementals have made a run for it.  One of them used Elemental power against two of the guards.  I was going to raise the alarm.”

“Good man.  Get a horse from the guard house and ride to the South-East gate.  Tell the guards to let no one pass.”  Issatoro then ordered his party on towards the Inn and the guard ran the other way toward the guardhouse.

Seaghan and Ambrose made their way along a series of lanes and finally, they came out on to one of the main streets that led from the centre of the city to the South-East gate.  Because it was still early in the morning the street was not overly crowded with travellers and they made quick progress.

Seaghan called to Ambrose. “You used Elemental power back there in the lane. I felt it.”

Ambrose ignored him. “Have any ideas about how we are going to get through the city gate?  By the time we get there, I am sure the guards would have been alerted.”

“Then we shall not go to the gate.  We should make for a section of the wall and I will make our own gate.” Seaghan yelled above the noise of the horse’s hooves.

As they got nearer the South-East gate, they slowed and started looking down the side streets to see if they led to the wall.  They finally found one which took them further South.  They turned down the road and quickened their pace.

The alarmed had been raised by the guard and Centurion Zappel, who was in the palace had also informed Prince Jarl.  Guards were now streaming towards all the city gates.  Issatoro had commandeered some horses from the Inn and he and several guards were now riding hard along the main street heading for the South-East gate.

Seaghan and Ambrose reined in their horses as they came to a dead end.  The road they had taken stopped at the wall.  Ambrose commented. “I hope we don’t get cornered in here.”

Seaghan dismounted and handed his reins to Ambrose. He walked to the base of the wall and then turned to Ambrose. “Move back as I am going to try and break a hole in the wall.”

Seaghan knelt on the ground and placed one hand on the wall and the other on the ground.  He started concentrating.  A low rumble started from under the wall, for Ambrose, it felt like a small earthquake.  He quickly dismounted to better control the horses.

Issatoro felt the Elemental power before he heard the rumble and pulled his horse to a halt.  The guards with him also reined in their horses and then they all felt the rumble.  One of the guards asked. “Your Eminence, what is it?”

He replied. “I am not sure, but they are not heading for the gate.  Come this way.”  He pulled his horse around and made for a side street.  The guards spurred their horses after him.

The rumble had grown in intensity and the ground was now shaking violently.  Small cracks were starting to appear in the wall as pieces of the rock started to fall down around Seaghan.  People in the nearby houses came running out into the street, yelling and screaming.  When they saw the two Elementals at the wall, they started running in the opposite direction.  Larger pieces of the wall were now falling near Seaghan, he dodged a few large rocks but didn’t stop his work.  Ambrose kept a watch down the road, occasionally glancing back at Seaghan.  It was now raining rocks and Ambrose was amazed that Seaghan hadn’t taken a direct hit.  Finally, Seaghan stopped and ran several metres back from the wall.  The rumbling started to subside.  The cracks were now very large and pieces of rock were still falling everywhere.  Seaghan knelt again and placed one hand on the ground.  Again, he started using his Elemental power. This time a crack started to appear in the road surface.  The ground was shaking so much now, that it was hard for Ambrose to keep his footing and control the horses.  Then there was a loud bang as a major crack, split the wall where the crack in the road met its base.  A hole had now appeared in the wall and it looked large enough for a person to pass through.  Seaghan stood up and the rumbling subsided.  He turned to Ambrose. “Quickly, let’s lead the horses through.”

Ambrose passed Seaghan the reins to his horse and they started to clamber their way over the rubble and through the hole.  Seaghan led the way and was halfway through, but Ambrose was struggling with his horse at the entrance to the hole when something caught his attention. He turned to look down the road.  A group of horsemen were approaching fast, led by Centurion Issatoro.  Ambrose raised one of his hands above his head, snapped his fingers and summoned fire.  A small ball of fire appeared in his hand.  He looked down the road searching for something to aim at and then he saw an old wooden awning jutting out from a house about fifty meters in front of the riders.  He threw the ball of fire at the house and it hit the awning.  The ball exploded and the awning erupted into flames.  Several of the horses shied away and a rider was thrown to the ground.  Centurion Issatoro and the others struggled to control their horses but managed to stay in their saddles.  Issatoro then urged his horse on again and raised his hand above his head.  A small ball of fire appeared in his hand and he stood up in his saddle and steadied himself, then he threw the ball at Ambrose.

Ambrose had just got the horse under control and moved it into the hole.  He saw the Centurion raise his hand and then throw the ball of fire.  Ambrose whacked his horse hard on its rump and it jumped ahead further into the hole.  Then he quickly summoned the wind with a whistle and as the ball of fire raced towards him, he forced a gust of wind at the fireball and pushed it to one side.  It was just enough to deflect the ball from its line and it hit the wall several metres to his right spraying sparks and flames as it hit.  Ambrose then turned quickly and scrambled after his horse.

Seaghan was waiting on the other side.  He had already mounted his horse and he held Ambrose’s horse by the reins.  Ambrose quickly mounted and they took off at a gallop.

Seaghan yelled at Ambrose. “What happened back there?”

“The Centurion threw a ball of fire at me.  His aim was off.  It hit the wall instead.”

Seaghan yelled. “Where are we going?”

“We will head South for the moment and then change directions and make for the mountains and try to lose them.” Ambrose then spurred his horse ahead to avoid answering any more questions.

Back at the wall; Centurion Issatoro and the guards had dismounted. They were scrambling their way through the opening.  Centurion Issatoro had sent two guards ahead of him to ensure the way was safe and to secure the other end.  He had also sent a guard back to the palace to inform Prince Jarl to what had happened and to let his colleague Centurion Zappel know that he was chasing a class two Elemental.

Tamplina

Centurions Pryborg and Rookardi both felt the faint use of Elemental power and it wasn’t just once, they had felt it several times.  It was very weak, meaning that whoever had used it was a long way off.  Centurions Rustilan and Maklana had felt it as well, but it didn’t register any concern with them.

Pryborg immediately broke camp and decided to head South. Fineen was right behind him.

Rookardi had been organising his search parties, but now he knew which way he had to go.  He started preparing to leave Tamplina that day. He would also head South.

Prince Melville and his son Theodor were at the docks unaware of what had happened.  They were seeing Princess Isabella and Ava off on their supposed voyage to Pukavan.  The royal barge Azzura was tied up at the royal wharf and the last pieces of luggage were being loaded.

Melville was saying his goodbyes to Isabella. “I have ordered the captain to take it slow and make port in Wycarba.  Mayor Judkin and Lady Nelligar will be thrilled to have you and Ava as their guests for a while.  We will come and see you for Ava’s birthday.  Fair sailing my love.”

Theodor was teasing his sister about her meeting her betroth and she was not happy.  They said their goodbyes. Ava joined her mother and they boarded the barge. The moorings were cast off. Melville and Theodor watched and waved as the Azzura slowly glided away.

Kyeamba

Jaymar was out in the stables at the Inn when he suddenly felt something and started to feel sick and dizzy. He was unsure of what had caused his sudden malaise. Suddenly, he thought it may have been caused by a Centurion.  He quickly dashed inside and called for his mother.  Grimhilda was there and comforted him saying he needed to concentrate and shield his power.

Ravenshowl

Far in the South, Princess Aliyah in her mountain fortress felt the use of Elemental power and also a small earth tremor. She called for a council meeting of her closest advisors and the Captain of her famous warriors, the Panthers.

Falsbrook

Seaghan and Ambrose kept riding all day taking the occasional pause to rest their horses.  They had to pass around two small villages along the road, but the road itself had been mostly clear of travellers.  All the time Ambrose was opening his senses to keep a track of how close their pursuers were.  They had opened up a considerable gap and attempted to cover their tracks several times to throw their pursuers off, but as far as Ambrose could tell the Centurion was still on their trail.  They had spoken little during the day and now as the evening approached Ambrose reined in his horse to a walk and turned to Seaghan. “Why are you risking everything to assist me?  You could have stayed and made up some excuse about not knowing who I was.”

Seaghan took a while to respond. “There is something about you Master Ambrose that intrigues me and His Highness, Prince Melville seems to place a great deal of trust in you.  So, for the moment I will ride with you and see how things play out.”  He paused to look around and then added. “Now what are we going to do for the night?”

“I know of a track that leads up into the mountains behind Ravenshowl.  I have deliberately been heading South, but now is the time to change directions.  By now you have probably guessed that I am an Elemental.”

“I had gathered that, but not just any Elemental.  I get the feeling that you are a class two Elemental and thus on a par with a Centurion.”

Ambrose stopped his horse and dismounted.  “I am going to try and confuse the Centurion and hopefully throw him completely off our trail.  It requires the use of Elemental powers, but since the Centurion already knows we are out here it won’t matter if he senses it.  In fact, since we left Falsbrook I have deliberately been allowing him to sense me. Now I am going to lift you and the horses over to that clearing over there on your left.” He pointed past Seaghan to a small clearing about twenty metres away.  “Hold on tight.”

Ambrose stepped a few metres away from Seaghan taking his own horse with him and then he let out a high-pitched whistle as he commanded the wind.  Leaves all around on the ground and in the trees started to rustle.  Ambrose was concentrating very hard, then he thrust his hands out in front of him and started to raise them up.  Seaghan hung on tightly to the horse’s neck as they started to lift off the ground.  The air was swirling around Seaghan and his horse as they were lifted further into the air.  Ambrose kept raising his hands and as he did the horse and rider went higher.  When they were just above the treetops Ambrose moved his arms in the direction of the clearing and they started to move over the trees.  The tops of the tree waved in the wind as the two passed over them.  Finally, they were above the clearing and Ambrose started to lower his arms.  He lowered them down with a thud and the wind stopped.  The horse stumbled a bit as it regained its feet. Seaghan waved his arms to indicate all was okay.

Ambrose moved away from his own horse, which was nervously prancing about. He started the process again. This time lifting his own horse up over the trees and into the clearing.  Seaghan grabbed the horse’s reins as soon as it landed to stop it from running off, it was clearly frightened.  Ambrose spent the next few minutes looking at the ground and covering some of their tracks. He then moved off the track a few metres, away from the direction of the clearing and found a rock.  He stepped up onto the rock and steadied himself. Seaghan watched with interest as Ambrose then crouched down. Seaghan heard him whistle again and then he sprang into the air.  The next thing Ambrose had landed next to Seaghan. He had leapt all the way over the trees and into the clearing.

Seaghan said with a smile on his face. “That was some trick.”  Ambrose mounted his horse looking very weary and replied. “Not something I do very often.  It takes a lot out of you.  Hopefully, that will confuse them for a while.”  He turned his horse East in the direction leading away from the road.  They walked the horses for a while to calm them before breaking into a trot.

Centurion Issatoro felt a strong surge in Elemental power and spurred his horse on faster.  He could sense his quarry ahead and commanded the guards with him to hurry along.  They were all tired from the long days riding, but did as they were told.  Then suddenly the Centurion yelled out in frustration. “Damn it.  They’ve gone.”  The presence he had felt up ahead was now gone.  All he could do was continue to the point he last felt the Elemental presence and then see what trail they could find.

Ambrose had his head down and had not spoken a word as they walked through the dense forest.  It was now dark and the going was slow.  Seaghan asked. “You’re very quiet.  Are you asleep on that horse? I’m getting very hungry and tired. What about you?”

Ambrose seemed to come out of a trance. “Just a little further.  I am concentrating on masking my powers and at the same time trying to keep track of the Centurion.  I think he has reached the spot where we left the road.  Another half hour and then we will rest and eat.”

Finally, Ambrose called a halt by a small creek and they both dismounted and tethered their horses.  They lit no fire and had to be content with cold food.  Just after they had settled down on their bedrolls it started to rain.  Ambrose went to sleep cold and wet, but with a contented smile on his face.  The rain would make tracking them even harder.

The Renegade has been Felt

On the other side of the mountains far away in Daarook, only the most powerful of Elementals felt the disturbance.  The Head Master and the High Centurion, both immediately called for a council of their most senior Centurions.

The High Centurion, Graguut, Santina, Oban and Donarto had all gathered at the Head Master’s request, but this time he had come to the Centurion Citadel.

“I am sure, like myself, you all felt the use of Elemental power.  There have been a number of instances and I believe they all occurred in the Falsbrook, Ravenshowl area.”  Most of the assembled Centurions nodded their heads in agreement.

“If the reports are true and a renegade Elemental is at large, then I am beginning to believe that this has been the work of that renegade.  What is the latest on the search?”  The Head Master directed his question at Graguut.

“Your Excellency Head Master, we have dispatched another two Centurions to Tamplina, they are to liaise with Centurions Rookardi and Pryborg.  I am sure they would have felt the Elemental power as well and would be heading to investigate it as we speak.”

“Don’t assume, find out.  Send urgent messengers. Plus I want those two extra Centurions instructed to head directly for Falsbrook and not Tamplina.”  The Head Master paused for a moment then continued.

“I am sending urgent messengers to both Prince Jarl and Princess Aliyah, informing them of the seriousness of this matter and for them to organise searches as well.  Does anyone have anything further to add?”

Gintaras replied. “Your Excellency Head Master, we will unite our resources and make the capture of this renegade our highest priority.” He looked at both Graguut and Oban for support.  They both bowed their heads slightly in acknowledgement.

The Head Master said as he turned to leave. “I had better see some results soon.”  The group remained silent as he marched out of the hall.  They then split up and went to their separate chambers to discuss the issue with their own factional groups.  Gintaras left with Graguut and Santina.

Tamplina

Centurion Rookardi had left Tamplina suddenly during the day and had taken three Elementals with him.  Word of his sudden departure reached Prince Melville and Prince Theodor. They agreed that with both Centurions now gone, there was no need for Theodor to travel to Middleton.  Instead, Melville instructed his son to ride South to Wycarba and meet up with his mother and sister. He would inform them that they cannot return home early as two more Centurions were coming to Tamplina.  Theodor made preparations that night and would leave early the next day.
