What fiction can do for society

Nauja Lynge This summer I swapped out years of op-ed writing for a summer fling as the author of an erotic diary at the Arctic Journal.

However, now it´s time to get serious again. My novel “Ivalu´s Color” is released this week. And I´m already working on a number 2.

I have made a name for myself as an outspoken proponent of keeping Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands together as a united kingdom.

I have been writing endless numbers of op-eds and even together with a Danish minister. I’ve also published an interactive book, organised debates and moderated a website devoted to discussing the politics of the North Atlantic relationship.

At the end of July I announced I was giving up on my project of seeking to get more people interested in North Atlantic and Arctic issues through the organisation I had established to do so. After years of taking the traditional approach, it was time to find new ways of reaching the public.
I can no longer be a part of forcing my countrymen into accepting that they should remain a part of the kingdom. Relationships need to be voluntary.

However, even though I have given up on the traditional approach I haven´t given up on the kingdom, or on trying to keep it together. I expect to keep working against populist movements in Greenland and the Faroe Islands that I feel are selling people the unproven idea of independence. The days of writing op-eds are over, though. I have received threats and, recently, I was so broken down due to this that I need a break from debating on the realm.
My message is still the same though.
If they want their own republics that is their decision, but it has to be the people who want it. I’d just like to make sure that people know what they are giving up before they agree to something else.

What a wounderful opportunity to write mystery novels now.
