I think many fiction writers and artists think of themselves as outsiders looking in. I know it’s true about me. Even in the real world I’m constantly searching for plot, theme and setting in everything around me. How do I fit in today’s story? My wife (an amazing writer, reality bender, and truth teller) and animals (currently a fabulous brown Newfoundland and a feral cat who’s not so feral anymore except when he is) keeps me grounded in (an altered) reality that most would consider fictional in itself; buried deep under the redwoods in a Hamlet of a small town on a river in northern California. I fish every day I can, when the river isn’t muddy or flooded. I lift and box to challenge my own personal myths. I talk story and magic and try n ...more

I will become interested in other idea, character or storylines that may not work on the story I am currently supposed to be working on.

Now I am not saying at times I don't write myself into a corner. This is common and at times it takes a bit to wriggle my way out. To deal with this situation I will write ahead, this will usually lead me to how I will solve my dilemmas.

Also as I get older I do find myself using outlines more. I used to believe that if I couldn't remember a plot device, dialogue, or any number of things, then it wasn't that good or important. Yeah. Age has kinda destroyed that philosophy. So I would recommend writing outlines and character sheets early on even on stories you may never write just to get in practice.(less)

So as a nod to the the apocalyptic fires in my area of Northern California:

The fire crept through the house burning his soul. His screams doused his flesh, leaving him conscious of the absolute devastation.(less)

Book Two Blues -- Why I'm not writing the second in the series

Why I’m not writing book two of my first published novel:

This might be one of the dumbest things an Indie writer can do, especially in speculative fiction. Shoot I’d advise an indie writer to have at least three ready to be publish books (in a series would be best) if you are looking to have a chance to break into the market. And I’m not doing it.

Oh! Believe me, I’ve started (about 5 years ago bef Read more of this blog post »
