I totally know what you mean about how it can be overwhelming - it definitely can be.

What I've done is try not to force things too much. It's why some of my books take so long to write - for example, I'm finally getting near the end of writing my third novel, which is really my 2nd since I started it 8 years ago, but will be my third to complete. I take a lot of notes, and fill up notebooks with different ideas and then when I get a chance to sit down and write, I put those together into a draft.

The other thing that does help is that when I decide it's time to write, I just say "okay it's time to write." I don't go onto twitter or anything else while I'm doing it, and even though they're only bits of an hour or two here or there, having specific time focused on just writing really helps me make progress. I also recommend having a separate space where you can write, whether it be a place in your house, or a coffee shop - it helps to make you focus on just what you are trying to accomplish at that time.

Basically it's a balancing act, but above all try to avoid multitasking and instead focus on one specific thing at a time - even within a specific day. When you start jumping around doing everything at once you can end up getting nothing done.

Finally, set a goal for yourself. It's what I've started doing at work, in my writing, etc. Just a simple thing of "I will sit down and write for a half hour" or "I'll put analytics together for this specific marketing campaign." Then when I accomplish my one goal, I have positive feedback for myself in having accomplished something, which makes me more positive in my views as to if I can really do the things I want to. Small successes can be important for your self-confidence.

Hope this helps. I know it's kind of rambly.

Help Make My Short Film Happen

NO ESCAPE marks the debut film from me – the indie author, William F. Aicher. As tends to be the case in most of my works, NO ESCAPE will be an “existential thriller” – this time with aliens!

In the film, a woman who’s had enough of the ongoing emotional abuse of her husband decides it’s time for her to escape her situation … renting a house for a few days to find time

“Why should he care what someone called him? He was still the same entity; the same, living, breathing life force destined to endure existence until the inevitable day that his existence ended. On that day a person’s name definitely doesn’t matter. On that final day a person is no longer a person, but instead nothing more than a lump of carbon-based matter, returning to the earth from whence it came.”
William F. Aicher, The Trouble With Being God
