The reclusive Ian Gregoire is a taciturn introvert residing somewhere in London, where he was born and raised. Of all life’s diversions, reading and writing are the only ones he ever deemed worthwhile enough to be passionate about. This eventually led to his belated decision to pursue his true calling in life as a fantasy and science fiction author. His debut novel, The Exercise Of Vital Powers, is just the first of many books he intends to inflict upon an unsuspecting world.

On the occasions he steps out of his reading and writing comfort zone, Ian has a fondness for computing, melancholy music, retro gaming, and Asian Cinema. Ian also loves peace and quiet, something that is in frustratingly short supply in his life.

I had a general idea of the English meanings of the terms I wanted to create so I would input those terms and check how they translated into half a dozen different languages and listened to how they are pronounced. After that I started messing around with those words, creating portmanteaus to see what new words I could come up with. Once I came up with combinations that looked and sounded good, it was just a matter of finalising a new word based on those combinations and altering the spelling of the finished words, enough to conceal all trace that the made up word was derived by combining real words from other languages.

To answer the second part of the question, the principal reason why I think Kayden's story was worth telling is because it confronts a complacent assumption that many of us have about abusing power. I suspect most of us believe that if we were given power over other people we would never abuse that power. Yet it would be so easy to allow self-interest to cause us to do just that and come up with justification for doing it, while denying that any abuse of power has occurred.(less)

Morgan of Sea and Storm by A.E. Marling
"This reminded me a of Lancelot in that it is a darker take on the Arthur/Merlin legend from a secondary character, with great prose. Though this one is magic-heavy whereas Kristian's book had essentially no magic in it. Both capture a post-Roman Brit" Read more of this review »

Ian added a status update: It appears I'm not the only person who was happy to learn that the proposed Buffy reboot has been cancelled. We obviously dodged a bullet, because the pilot filmed for Hulu must have been really bad for them to get cold feet about committing to the show.

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for when dealing with a stupid person than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison

“Let me tell you this: if you meet a loner, no matter what they tell you, it's not because they enjoy solitude. It's because they have tried to blend into the world before, and people continue to disappoint them.”
