EXPERIMENT, release Fall 2019

I did not want to tease with Experiment until after the release of Grand Master, but I'm weak! :) I love this story and couldn't wait to share at least one tiny little teaser, especially since I'm almost done with the rewrites and it's going to the editor next week! <3

EXPERIMENT
Kealans came to Earth about nine years ago. Several giant flying saucers hovered over the major cities one fine morning. I was still in high school back then, and I shared the initial excitement everyone felt at the first contact with the extraterrestrial.

It didn’t take long though for the aliens to make it clear, they did not come in peace.

The Internet went first, then all televisions suddenly stopped working. The radio lasted a few hours longer, long enough to inform us that the alien invasion was deemed hostile.

All military attempts of the Coalition to attack the spaceships resulted in the immediate annihilation of our aircraft and missiles.

Then they attacked us. The entire population of several towns and small cities around the world was eradicated within minutes when the wide rays of black light descended on them from the flying saucers.

All capital structures, the machines, even pets had been left intact. However, the people in those cities were turned to dust. Literally, a handful of grey cold ash was all that remained from the person who happened to be within the reach of the black rays.

Human capitulation came quickly after that. The Coalition was relieved to find that Kealans’ demands were much less than could have been expected, which must have sped up the negotiations of the terms of our surrender.

The aliens claimed both Earth Poles as their territory. No official report on the purpose of that appropriation ever came, but I’d heard rumors that they ended up erecting their buildings there. With as little use as those locations had for human kind, this was actually seen as a lucky break for the Earth population, especially since Kealans still allowed the science expeditions to both poles, as long as the humans stayed away a certain distance from their facilities.

Another demand with more noticeable consequences for general population was mandatory medical examination. Every person over the age of sixteen had to go through a full annual evaluation.

At first, there were some protests about it. Not that any of us ever had a choice. Even I, a high school student from a small town, understood that the negotiations were mostly for the show of goodwill on their part. After that lethal demonstration of their power, they didn’t need our government’s permission to take what they wanted.

After nine years, the global medical exams had become the new norm. By now, hardly anyone questioned it, begrudgingly accepting having to go see the doctor once a year as something that had to be done—kind of like renewing one’s driver’s licence, or filing the taxes.

Other than that, it was easy for us to forget about the alien presence on Earth after a while.

We didn’t know much about them beyond the name of their planet, Keala. The location of the planet had also remained unknown to us and was believed to be outside of the range detectable by human technology.

I watched the news broadcast of the few official visits of Kealans with Representatives of Coalition. The images of their tall figures, draped in black cloaks, with hoods drawn low over their faces, left an unpleasant impression on me, bringing the Grim Reaper to mind.

Beyond those few videos, there was very little on them. The aliens never showed up in public, letting the drones and the Coalition Forces do their work. No one knew what they looked like under those cloaks.

These were the creatures who now demanded a marriage with me.

Please, let it be a mistake, a joke, a nightmare.
Anything but real.
