B. R. Johnson is a clinical psychologist and an adjunct professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, teaching in the Psychology and Sociology Department. He grew up in the Westside neighborhood where most of the fictional works he has written take place. He was born in 1943, and has lived in the Los Angeles area all his life. The Los Angeles he knew in his early years was not that different from Trudy Mansfield's. While he was too young to actually remember the war years, his mother and older brother told many stories about their experiences, accounts which have been incorporated into the narrative, have inspired scenes, and have added textural details.
