Interview with Rebecca Hogue: Main Character Monday-ish

Interview with Rebecca Hogue, Main Character MondayInterview with Rebecca Hogue: Main Character Monday-ish

Welcome to Main Character Monday. Yes, I am aware it is Tuesday. However, our main character’s book releases today, and I don’t think there’s a better day to interview her.

The Details

Rebecca joins us from Fireflies in Sacred Shadows (don’t you love that title?) by Tonya B. Ashley. This is the second book in the Lost and Found series published by Scrivenings Press. I’m currently reading the first in the series, Of Faith and Dreams, and I can’t wait to finish it and start this one. Both books are available in paperback and eBook formats. Stick with me after the interview for more information on Fireflies in Sacred Shadows.

Now, let’s meet Rebecca Hogue.

Interview with Rebecca Hogue

Welcome to Main Character Monday, Rebecca. Let’s begin getting to know you. Tell us about yourself

My name is Rebecca Hogue. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I run my family’s boardinghouse in Van Buren, Arkansas. Some days it feels a bit like managing a small town under one roof, but the Lord provides strength for every task. I have six siblings still living at home, each with their own personalities and needs, and much of these last five years I’ve spent holding them together since Mama passed. I don’t mind the work, though I won’t pretend I never grow tired. I do miss the days when I had the freedom to wander down to the creek on an autumn afternoon, before responsibility settled in so firmly.

Responsibilities do have a way of stealing time for relaxation. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

Most people think I’m the sensible, steady-handed one who keeps the household in order. But when I was younger, I was far less… contained. I used to climb the tallest oak behind our house and sit higher than any girl had good sense to. I loved the view, the feeling that the world stretched farther than I could see.

And once—just once—when Justin teased me relentlessly about a boy saying hello to me after church, I slipped a frog into his bed to settle the matter. He hollered so loud he startled the hens. I should probably feel guilty about it, but truth be told… I don’t. Not even a little.

I suppose there’s still a part of me that wonders what lies beyond our little corner of Arkansas. I doubt I’ll ever see it for myself, but some days, when the chores settle and the evening grows quiet, I think about that oak tree and how it felt to climb so high the town disappeared and only possibility remained.

A beautiful memory, beautifully stated. What is your favorite book of the Old Testament?

If I’m speaking truthfully, the book I’m most drawn to is Esther. I admire her courage more than I can say. The way she stepped into danger with only the faintest assurance that her obedience might truly make a difference.

But I’ll admit something else: her story scares me a little. Esther was asked to risk everything for her people. To speak when silence would have been safer. To stand in a moment she didn’t choose.

I suppose that’s why I return to her again and again. She reminds me that God places us where we are for reasons we may not understand and gives strength we don’t always feel. Esther’s story makes me braver… even when I’d rather stay small and hidden.

Is there a book of the Bible you have trouble getting through?

Leviticus. I know it’s important… but mercy, it does test a person’s determination. I tend to read it in small portions with extra coffee.

I can understand that. If you could meet anyone from scripture, excluding Jesus, who would it be?

Naomi. She knew loss deeply, yet she kept going. I want to sit with a woman like that. Someone who understands grief, but also the stubborn hope it takes to go on.

Great choice. Jesus had twelve disciples. Which one are you most like?

Probably Andrew. Quiet, steady, more comfortable bringing people to Jesus than standing center stage. There’s a gentleness about him that I admire.

Gentle can be good. Jesus says we are to be His light in the world. What does this mean to you?

Light isn’t loud. It doesn’t demand attention. It simply shows the way. To me, being His light means tending to the small, faithful things—kindness, service, mercy—so others can find their bearings when life feels like nightfall.

If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

You don’t have to be unbroken to be useful. God meets us in the places we’d rather keep hidden.

Before I let you go, I have a few more questions, just for fun. Nothing stressful. If you could have a superpower, what one would you choose?

Well… I’m not entirely sure I understand this notion of extraordinary abilities. Something about people doing impossible feats as if it were everyday business? If I had to choose, I suppose I’d ask for the ability to pause time long enough to finish all the chores before another mess crops up. Though truth be told, I’d settle for everyone putting their boots where they belong.

If offered the opportunity, would you choose to travel in space?

In space? You mean among the stars themselves? Goodness, no. The Lord placed me on solid ground for a reason. I prefer my feet where I can feel the earth beneath them—and where there’s a clear path home if I need it.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? I… don’t rightly know the difference. In my day, chocolate was mostly for drinking, and only if someone had a sweet tooth strong enough to counter the bitterness.

Roses or Daisies? Daisies.

Salad or Soup? Soup.

One final question. If you had three words to describe your author, Tonya B. Ashley, what words would you choose?

Hope in shadows.

That’s what I’d say. She seems to understand life isn’t without its dark corners, but she keeps her lamp trimmed just the same. She looks for light where others might give up searching, and somehow, she finds it—then writes it down so the rest of us can see it too .

Beautiful. You really do have a way with words. Thank you Rebecca, for joining me today.

Readers, thank you for joining me for this interview with Rebecca Hogue. Stick around for more about Tonya B. Ashley and Fireflies in Sacred Shadows. And don’t forget to leave questions for Rebecca or Tonya in the comments.

More About the Autho

Tonya B. Ashley is an award-winning writer who enjoys a thread of adventure, whether in story or in life. Fascinated with people, places, and nature, she loves to explore through writing, reading, creating art, and hiking. One of her favorite hiking destinations is Fuzzy Butt Falls, which exudes quite the Narnia experience despite its humorous name.

She and her firefighter/paramedic husband are the parents of an adult son, also a firefighter, and a Tonya B. Ashley, authorschool-aged son. Though she has past experience as a 911 dispatcher and volunteer firefighter, life with boys is her most incredible adventure. She has learned so much from them, including how to hike ten miles in 90-degree weather with 90 percent humidity, the easiest way to set up a hammock, the quickest way to the emergency room, and how to play a tenor saxophone. Sadly, attempts to teach her to play the trumpet only sounded like dying baby elephants.

A few things from Tonya’s adventure to-do list include the wild cave tour at Blanchard Springs, a hot air balloon ride, and hiking on a remote island searching for a rare kind of coffee. (Don’t tell anyone she hasn’t taken that coffee hike, though. That’s the story she uses when people ask how she split the tendon in her ankle. It’s much better than, “I was walking to the coffee machine in the kitchen.”)

When she is not writing, hiking, or enjoying time with family, she substitutes for the local schools. She loves to help students make connections through story and find their voices through writing. Her most treasured moments with students come when they have room to explore topics, situations, or emotions, and they wander into deeply profound or deeply humorous places.

Her favorite writer is C.S. Lewis, who offers enchanting worlds and flawed characters to explore in his fiction and no-nonsense, hard-hitting wisdom in his nonfiction. While she adores Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, her favorite book is the Bible, which she loves for its artistry, messy people, practicality, and ability to deepen her relationship with God. She often reminds herself that “the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6).”

Tonya writes stories of resilience featuring messy characters and a thread of adventure. Like a good treasure hunt, great stories ought to offer a gem the reader can keep. Along with her publication credits as a devotional and article writer, she received first place in an ACFW First Impressions contest.

Interview with Yonah: Main Character Monday

<yoastmark class=Interview with Yonah: Main Character Monday

Welcome to Main Character Monday and my interview with Yonah. Unlike many of my interviews, Yonah isn’t the main character in the series where she lives. Instead, she is a side character that lives in book one and book two of the A Certain Future series by Linda Dindzans. This is wonderful as she has a great understanding of the happenings in the lives of everyone in the series.

A Certain Man, the first book in the series released in 2024. Linda’s newest release, A Certain Mercy, releases on December 9, 2025. Both are published by Scrivenings Press, and A Certain Mercy is available for pre-order in eBook format. It will also be available in paperback starting on release day.

Interview with Yonah

Welcome to Main Character Monday, Yonah. Let’s start with something interesting I’ve heard about you. Your name is Yonah, but that isn’t the name you were given at birth. Who gave you this name and why was it chosen for you?

I was sent in secret to Shechem to serve as Dovekeeper for the High Priest of Samaria. My mother chose the name Yonah, meaning Dove. She said it was fitting for my new life.

It’s a beautiful name. Thank you for sharing. Now, I’d like to ask you to tell me and the readers a little more about yourself.

Though I am not the heroine in either A Certain Man or A Certain Mercy, my obedience to my mother—rather than refusing her evil schemes—proved pivotal in Mara’s reunion with Samuel after seven years of separation. Mara says the One God’s ways are not our ways. He can turn what was meant for evil to good.

That is very true. Now, you said you were sent to Shechem. Will you tell us why?

My mother lost favor with King Herod, who was known to plot the deaths of kinsmen and even wives. When she failed to regain his attention, she commanded me to dance for him—to dance for her life and mine. I obeyed, and it cost me dearly. After one night with Herod, I was left a raving madwoman, speaking all manner of treason.

I see you are dressed as a common Samaritan woman. However, you still carry yourself with dignity that isn’t often attributed by certain people to Samaritan commoners.

I am neither common nor Samaritan, but I am content in my new life. A Dovekeeper must be trustworthy and steadfast. Messages of great import pass through my hands. Those who cannot read come to me to read or write messages on their behalf

I’ve heard Shechem is a small village full of  “rumor ravens”. You are an outsider. Are you content with your life?

When I first came to Shechem, only caring for her husband Samuel’s infant daughter, Lyra, kept me from madness. At first Mara assumed I was Samuel’s wife, yet she showed me kindness. Now she knows Lyra’s mother died in childbirth. She married Samuel and treats me as a sister, though she does not know who I once was.

Madness? You seem stable and sane to me. What happened?

Yes. Both Mara and Samuel, each in their own time, met Yeshua of Nazareth and came to believe He was the Promised One. Their testimonies brought many in Shechem to faith. I was one— and my reason returned.

When was this?

Before Yeshua set the religious and  political world aflame—and before all three of us were immortalized in the gospels.

Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

Despite my scarlet past, I have repented and been blessed with friends. I have also found a good man—Ozri, Samuel’s apprentice. I hope one day as the story of A Certain Mercy unfolds, Ozri finds the courage to ask my mother for my hand.

Surely, you can share your birth name with us. Our readers pose no threat.

It is not safe. If I am found, those who sheltered me could suffer. Yet my true identity can be gleaned from history outside Scripture. Some believe I married Philip the Tetrarch—but that, too, was my mother’s cunning deceit. In A Certain Mercy, another famous Jew hiding in Shechem threatens to expose me.

What is your favorite part of  the writings of Moses, the prophets, or the psalms?

As a Herodian Jew and a young woman, I knew little of the holy writings, but I heard the Baptizer many times when he stood before Herod. His cry—“I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness”— a promise of the coming Messiah— filled me with dread and hope. Now, I long to hear Yeshua’s voice myself and see His miracles— perhaps I shall in A Certain Mercy.

God called Gideon to lead his army. Gideon didn’t believe he could, but he trusted and did as God asked. Like Gideon, have you ever felt unworthy of God’s call?

Often. Satan taunts me with the memory that I caused the Baptizer’s death. The Evil One wants to pull me back toward madness. But Mara and Samuel pray with me and remind me that the Lord’s mercy is certain for those with a penitent heart

Micah 6:8 says to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Which is easiest—or hardest—for you?

Samuel, Mara, and Ozri have shown me how to love kindness. Each day I seek to walk the path of mercy and show kindness to others, even those who remain suspicious of a stranger.

If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

The Messiah walks the earth, lives among us. He says His kingdom is come. One day we will have eyes that see and ears that hear. One day we will understand the mysteries He teaches.

Just for Fun Questions

Wow. I feel like you’ve lived a full life in your few years. And you’ve learned so much. Thank you for sharing with us. I do have a few fun questions for you, since everything to this point has been so serious.

If you could have one exotic pet, what would it be?

I am content with my messenger doves, but I do have a favorite white one I have named Metuka, my sweetie.

If you could travel through time, would you?

No. I have come to believe that the times of our birth and death and the days of our lives are appointed by the Lord. I only hope my story lives on to reach those who have never heard of Yeshua’s mercy and miracles.

Sunrise or sunset?

Sunset— the beginning of the Jewish day ,moving from darkness toward the light.

Chocolate or vanilla?

I do not know chocolate, but vanilla is an exotic flavor that Judean kings infuse into wine. It is a favorite of mine. In the House of Herod Antipas, this special treat was offered to certain guests as a sign of the king’s favor.

No electricity or no plumbing?

I do not know this electricity of which you speak, but I do miss the aqueducts, cisterns, and elaborate bathhouses in Herod’s palaces. We always had fresh water for drinking, gardening, and bathing. Here in Shechem we must go to Jacob’s well and draw water each day.

One last question for you before we say farewell. If you could describe Linda Dindzans using only three words, what would those words be?

Lively. Truth-seeker. Persistent.

Thank you for being with us today, Yonah. I hope you’ve enjoyed your time here as much as I’m sure our readers have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know you better.

Readers, stick around for more information on Linda Dindzans and her soon-to-release book, A Certain Mercy.

Interview with Riley Hudson: Main Character Monday

Mistletoe and Malice Interview with Riley HudsonInterview with Riley Hudson: Main Character Monday

Welcome and Book Details

Welcome to my interview with Riley Hudson on this week’s Main Character Monday. Before we begin, let me tell you a bit about Riley’s book. Mistletoe and Malice is a new release from author, Lori DeJong. This romantic suspense is published by Scrivenings Press and became available on October 21, 2025. Mistletoe and Malice is available in paperback, eBook, and also using your subscription to Kindle Unlimited. There’s more about the book below, as well as a purchase link.

Interview with Riley Hudson

Now, it’s time to welcome today’s guest, Riley Hudson. Riley, please, start us off by telling us a little about yourself.

I’m not usually comfortable talking about myself, but I guess a little is easy enough. (chuckles) I’m thirty years old, still single, but at least I live in my own place. I’m the youngest of three and very close to my family—my mom, dad, my grandpa Kevin who lives in the guesthouse at my parents’ estate, my two brothers, their wives, and my nieces and nephews. Our family has a strong legacy of faith, and we’ve been very blessed to be in a position to support several missions and non-profits not only financially, but with time and prayer.

I’m also a defense attorney who specializes in cases of wrongful conviction. It’s completely pro bono because when I’m convinced someone is doing someone else’s time, I’ll do everything in my power to remedy it. For my down time, I love hanging with my three best friends. We’ve been joined at the hip since fifth grade, and I don’t know what my life would be like without them.

Wow. I love that you have such a strong network of family and friends. And being a defense attorney. You must not be afraid of hard work Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I have a weakness for clothes. I know. Sounds materialistic, but I find clothes to be fun and versatile. Even mood-altering, if that makes any sense. The way I feel in a formal gown is different than I might wearing jeans, tennis shoes and casual top for a Houston Texans football game. But for every penny I spend on clothes, I send the same amount to one of the non-profits I work with. And every year, I send all of that year’s formal gowns and business suits to a charity that provides gowns to underprivileged girls for prom, their quinceanera, and so on, and suits to women trying to find jobs or starting new jobs.

That sounds like a beautiful way to enjoy the thing you love while not neglecting those who are less fortunate. What is your favorite book in the New Testament and why?

Ephesians. It tells us who we are in Christ. Not who we are in our own strength, but who He created us to be. Then chapter four is a little user manual, if you will, giving us guidelines for how we should walk with the Lord after committing ourselves to the Him. I love that book.

It’s one I enjoy reading again and again, too. God called Gideon to lead his army. Gideon didn’t believe he could, but he trusted and did as God asked. Have you ever felt like you weren’t equipped to do what God asked you to do? What did you do?

Oh, wow. Yes, on a regular basis, really. The brother of one of my best friends was wrongfully convicted of murder while we were in college. By the time I was in law school, he was fighting his way through appeals and had tens of thousands in legal costs he still owed. I changed my track from corporate law to criminal specifically to help him without requiring any payment.

From the beginning, I was in way over my head and worked myself into physical collapse. I had to lean hard on my faith for wisdom and guidance in getting him a new trial. He was exonerated, but every case I take, I feel like David going up against the Goliath of the judicial system. Juries are good and necessary. But they do get it wrong sometimes, and when someone loses their life to the prison system when they’re innocent of the crime, it’s truly tragic.

I love that you donated your time to your friend. I agree, there are downsides to our legal system, but I find there are strengths and weaknesses in any system people develop. I’m glad your friend didn’t have to suffer the weaknesses with you on his team. Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Is there one of these you find easier to accomplish? Is one harder?

I love every part of that verse, but if I had to pick one, the justice part specifically speaks to me because that’s my vocation – to find justice for those who need it so badly. Not just my client, but the victim, or the victim’s family – they all need justice.

Very well said. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

God loves you and wants only to walk closely with you. Don’t get so lost trying to find your purpose when your ultimate purpose is to simply follow Him. He’ll lead you to the work He wants you to do.

A Few Questions for Fun

We’ve talked about a lot of serious things today. For just a moment, I’d like to dive into the lighter side. If you could have one exotic pet, what would it be?

Does a koala bear count? I love koalas!

Koalas definitely count. If you could travel through time, would you?

That is an excellent question to ponder. Of course there are things I’d love to go back and do differently. And I wish I could go back and save my friend Caitlyn, who was murdered. But I can’t help but wonder how changing the past would change the present. Or the future. It’s an interesting thought.

I love that you think about far-reaching consequences. Must be a side-effect of being a lawyer. Sunrise or sunset?   Sunset

Chocolate or Vanilla?  Chocolate all day

No electricity or no plumbing?  No electricity

Riley’s Final Word

Riley, using only three words (which I realize may be difficult for a lawyer), please describe your author, Lori DeJong.

Faithful, sensitive, caring

Having met Lori on a few occasions, I have to say that I agree. Thank you, Riley, for joining me today. This has been a great interview, and I feel like my readers and I have gotten a great taste of who you are. I think we’ve all probably found several things we want to know more about as well and will be picking up your story.

Readers, before you go, take a moment to learn a little more about Lori DeJong and Mistletoe and Malice.

MY STILL HOLDING OUT FOR YOU REVIEW

Before I give my review, I do want to point out for my readers who are used to me reading Christian fiction only, that this book falls more into clean fiction than Christian fiction. As such, there are a couple reference to an unmarried couple sharing a bed, but there is not even a reference to sex in those instances, keeping it a very clean read. This did not affect my rating at all.

I’ve never read a book by Jennifer Carr before, and I didn’t know what to expect from this one. While I usually don’t enjoy books that open at the end and then go back and fill in the blanks for the majority of the book, the writing of this one was done in a way that it didn’t bother me. And I like the back and forth from one POV to the other in each chapter, though there are a few chapters in a row for each POV at times.

The love story set against the backdrop of a musical television reality show was a joy to read. Their fears of moving from friends to more was realistic and kept me rooting for them to take that next step beyond their fears. It is a sweet love story.

As wonderful as the love story is the portrayal of the friendships developed through the reality show where all reason would say they should be against each other instead of fostering a feeling of family. It was sweet and added depth to the story after the show ended.

I love some of the phrasing the author uses. In a story about musicians, there was a rhythm and use of description that was almost lyrical in itself. It paired perfectly with the story. And the story itself was not only sweet and beautiful but heartbreaking too. And so wonderfully written I found myself moved to tears at various points.

For my Still Holding Out for You review I give the story five stars.

My On A Midnight Clear Review

First, the cover is so compelling. It speaks to the time period and setting and drew me in completely. It’s so simple, but very effective for garnering attention. Now, for the stories.

I think this is a first book by Tracie Peterson for me. If you enjoy marriage of convenience stories, you’re going to love this one. Friends to more fans will also enjoy it as the two main characters have known each other since childhood. While remaining on the lighter side, the story does take a look at the struggles that can come when a grieving family, especially kids, are trying to move forward while still hurting for the ones they lost. Angel and Vincent and the kids are characters you’d like to get to know better, and their story is a sweet one to start your holiday reading off with.

I’ve read a few books by Misty Beller, and I enjoyed this one as I have the others. It is a quick and easy read full of the spirit of Christmas and romance. I enjoyed Vincent and Hope as individuals and was rooting for them as a couple. I love the idea that while Hope is capable and independent in many ways, she is completely open to love and marriage. She’s a strong character which is needed in her line of work. But she’s also so good and kind and nurturing. You see it in everything she does. These characters were a joy to watch fall in love.

A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer is a great finisher to this collection. Little bits of humor find their way to the page which is nice. And even though I am not at all a math person, I still enjoyed this story. I love the way the author tied the title in throughout the book. And the development of romance after building a friendship through letters is great. The author does a great job of portraying the angst that a couple might face when meeting for the first time, especially when both lack a little in the area of social graces.

Overall, this collection is an easy read. I finished in one day, but it could easily be broken down over three days for a sweet read to end your evening with. They may not be full-length stories, but that doesn’t keep them from being full of enough romance and Christmas spirit to put you in the Christmas mood. For my On A Midnight Clear review I give the collection five stars.

My Love Between the Pages Review

The title alone convinced me to read this book. I love stories that deal with authors, publishers, and book shops. Plus, there’s the whole childhood best friends to more trope. I love reading about couples who’ve known each other forever and slowly their eyes are opened to the fact that their love is more than friendship. And the characters are likable and relatable, all the characters, not just the main characters. The fact that their family and friends see what they refuse to see and don’t hesitate to stick their nose into Lisa and Jayden’s business is great.

I also like that the work-life balance is explored. Jayden wants to be present for future family, and he knows what he’s worked toward his whole life may not provide that opportunity. I know Lisa struggles to see that in him, but I’m not sure why as close as they are. Of course, Jayden is keeping a big secret from her. And while I get his reasoning for it to some extent, I feel the build-up for his nerves about it was huge compared to Lisa’s reaction to it. I know it was needed to add tension, but I felt he should have known her reaction. And his not telling her feels a bit like lying coming from a man of faith.

There is only one scene I really had an issue with and that was the one bed scene. Absolutely nothing happened between them in this scene, and for that, I’m glad. I think, though, that this bothered me because it wasn’t a one bed by necessity situation but one based solely on choice. And even after learning they’re sharing a hotel room (I initially thought a suite with two separate rooms or beds but was wrong), they make the choice to share the bed instead of sleeping separate as they originally planned. And it was presented with zero temptation even though they’re in a romantic relationship. And having them sleeping in the same bed together did nothing to progress the story, grow their relationship, or reveal anything new about the characters. They could have just as easily not shared the bed.

There are a lot of cute and fun scenes in the story that showcase not only Lisa and Jayden’s friendship, but also their relationships with both their mothers and Lisa’s best friend. These scenes invite the reader into their world, and you come away feeling like you know those people. You can probably even name who they are in your real life. I haven’t read the first book in the series, but I feel like I’d really enjoy the main characters because even as secondary characters, I liked them.

For my Love Between the Lines review I give the story three and a half stars (rounded to four). It’s a quick, easy, enjoyable read that features two of my favorite things, reading and writing.

Interview with Harriet Bailey Knight: Main Character Monday and Giveaway

Interview with Harriet Bailey KnightInterview with Harriet Bailey Knight: Main Character Monday

The Details

Welcome to another Main Character Monday and my interview with Harriet Bailey Knight. Harriet joins us from Borrowed Trouble by Shaen Layle. Borrowed Trouble is book 15 of 18 in the Mysteries of Cobble Hill Farm series. It is available in both paperback and eBook formats.

While today’s interview is with Harriet, I have had the pleasure of interviewing Shaen Layle. Stick around after today’s interview for the link to the author’s interview and a great giveaway opportunity. For now, let’s meet Harriet.

Interview with Harriet Bailey Knight

Harriet, for those who may not be familiar with you or this series, please, tell us a bit about yourself.

A year-and-a-half ago, I moved from Connecticut to England to take over my late grandfather’s estate and veterinary practice at Cobble Hill Farm. Moving was a risk but one I’m so glad I took. I love my community, my family and friends, and my new husband, pastor Will Knight (who I think is as handsome as any Jane Austen hero).

With such a glowing review, it sounds like Will is a swoon-worth match for you. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

Mysteries seem to find me at every turn! In fact, Will and I had to put our honeymoon on hold so that we could uncover who stole my family’s antique endearment brooch at our wedding reception. Another fun fact? My first pet was a box turtle named Sheldon.

Those are two very different fun facts, and I know readers will appreciate that look behind the curtain at who Harriet Bailey Knight really is. Of course, I think our favorite scriptures give people a lot of insight into who we are as well. What is your favorite book of the Old Testament?

I’ve always loved the Psalms, specifically Psalm 148, which talks about all the creatures of the earth being created for God’s glory. Some psalms lift me when I’m discouraged, while others remind me to cultivate a grateful heart. No matter what I might face, I can find a remedy in Psalms.

The Psalms have something for everyone, don’t they? Is there a book of the Bible you have trouble getting through?

To be honest, Leviticus is difficult to wade through at times! It’s easy to get bogged down by all the details. But I know that every book of the Bible is purposeful and divinely crafted. I just need to continue studying and praying that God would reveal the message He wants me to receive from His Word.

I have to agree with your assessment on all points regarding Leviticus, hard to read but has God-given purpose. If you could meet anyone from scripture, excluding Jesus, who would it be?

I’d like to meet Daniel. He was courageous in the face of adversity, loyal to God’s commands, and a person of steadfast faith. He leaned on God’s wisdom rather than man’s. I’d love to emulate his character and commitment to God in my own life.

He definitely lived life according to his faith. Jesus had twelve disciples. Which one are you most like?

I share some personality traits with Thomas. He was logical and needed evidence before he made decisions. I tend to be pretty practical, so Thomas and I have that in common. However, I also know that I need to balance that desire for knowledge with trusting God and His plans. It’s a work in progress!

Aren’t we all a work in progress? Jesus says we are to be His light in the world. What does this mean to you?

To me, it means that we have the privilege of sharing the hope that we have in Jesus with others. This message comes through in the way we talk, act, and conduct ourselves every day and should illuminate the dark corners of the world for His glory.

If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

When God calls you to it, don’t be afraid to take a step of faith! If I hadn’t done that, I never would have moved to White Church Bay, reconnected with family and made new friends, or met my husband, Will. Sometimes the best plans are the ones that we never make at all!

That is a great message. Sometimes those faith steps are hard to take. But it sounds like yours ended up just the way God wanted it to. Now that we’ve seen a little more of who you are in the area of faith, I’d like to ask you some quick answer questions to get a look at the less serious side of Harriet Bailey Knight.

Just for Fun Questions

If you could have a superpower, what one would you choose?

The ability to heal anyone at any time. It’s why I got involved in medicine in the first place!

If offered the opportunity would you choose to travel in space?

I think I would. How amazing would it be to have a full view of God’s creation?

Dark or Milk Chocolate? Either one. I don’t turn down a dessert!

Roses or Daisies? Roses, like the ones that grow in the garden at Cobble Hill Farm

Salad or Soup? Soup (to ward off the coastline chill!)

And one final question for you today. This one is to give us a peek into the one who authored your story. If you only had three words to use, how would you describe Shaen Layle?

Bookish, mystery-lover, tea-drinker

I think those are great words. And if the cover of your story is any indication, I think they must be very fitting. I want to thank you for joining me today. And I want to thank Shaen Layle for this interview with Harriet Bailey Knight.

Readers, stick with me a little while longer. I have more about Shaen and Borrowed Trouble.

Interview with Alana Somers: Main Character Monday

<yoastmark class=Interview with Alana Somers: Main Character Monday

Happy Labor Day! And welcome to another Main Character Monday and my interview with Alana Somers from Melody of Life by Beth E. Westcott. Melody of Life is the second book in the Love’s Refrain Series. The genre is contemporary Christian romance. Published by Scrivenings Press, this book is available in both paperback and eBook. And if you’re a member of Kindle Unlimited, this book is available with that subscription as well.

As always, please stick around after the interview for more about the author and book, including a purchase link. And now, on to the interview.

Interview with Alana Somers

Alana, I want to welcome you to Main Character Monday. It’s always a pleasure meeting new characters and finding out a little bit about their stories. To start us off, please, tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m twenty-five years old, single, and I grew up in Millvale. I’ve been an aid worker with the International Aid Society since I graduated from college, and I help refugees suffering from war and natural disasters. I’m home now to recover from malaria and reconsidering my future. My parents are away caring for my grandmother who is suffering from dementia. My sister Ellie, her husband Ben, and her baby boy Ian live in Millvale. Ian is the sweetest baby ever! And then there’s Mark Chambers, someone I’ve admired for a long time.

Hmm. Mark Chambers sounds interesting, but maybe we will come back to him. For now, tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

When I was six, I wanted to be a cowgirl.

That’s fun. I think we gain insight into a person when we see what people dreamed of as children and what they actually become. Another area where I think we get insight is from the scriptures people hold onto most. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

Proverbs 3:5,6 has become a significant Scripture for me since I contracted malaria and I’m facing some major decisions in my life, including the direction of my relationship with Mark Chambers. I need to trust God and believe He will direct me in the right way. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (NKJV)

I knew we’d come back to Mark Chambers! But for the moment I want to stick with the scripture theme. Is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

If I must choose one, it would be Ruth. Ruth learned to trust God through the many challenges and changes in her life.

Given what you’ve told us about dealing with malaria, I can understand that comparison. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

 I think joy.

I imagine working with refugees has been a great help in looking at your own life and finding reason for joy. Is there one that is more challenging than the others?

 Patience

If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Never say no to God.

A great reminder for whatever choices come our way. Since we’ve been talking about the more serious side of life, I’d like to end with some fun questions. Nothing too deep. Just little glimpses into the mind of Alana Somers. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

This is a hard one because my work has taken me to South America, Africa, and Europe. Maybe Hawaii.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

Public speaking.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? Dark

Beach or Mountains? Beach

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? A mixture of the two.

One final question for you. We’ve talked a lot about you, but I’d like to focus on your storyteller, Beth E. Westcott for a moment. Given only three words, how would you describe Beth?

Sometimes she’s grumpy

Okay. I admit, I may have chuckled about that answer. I think you may be the most honest person I’ve ever asked that question to. And it makes me want to know more about her journey from the beginning to the end of telling your story. Sounds like you may have butted heads along the way.

Thank you for joining me today, Alana. It was a pleasure to meet you.

Readers, if you’ve enjoyed my interview with Alana Somers, stick around. I’ve got more for you about her story and about Beth E. Westcott, who I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with many times and never found grumpy.

More About the Author

A life-long lover of books and reading, Beth has four previously published contemporary romance novels: Meadow Song (Love’s Refrain Book 1), Heart’s Desire, A Heart’s Journey, and Her Heart’s Longing, comprising The Three Sisters Series, and a rom-com novella, Snowflakes and Puppy Love, included in thePets Amore collection. Her short story “Sadie and the Princess” appeared in Heart-warming Horse Stories on Amazon.

After graduating from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, she married Frank Westcott. They raised three children and have five granddaughters and one grandson who is in heaven.  First with Child Evangelism Fellowship and then in pastoral ministry in several churches, Beth worked alongside Frank for 38 years. She became a 4-H leader when her children belonged to 4-H, and she home schooled her children for twelve years.

She enjoys reading, music, gardening, sewing, and photography and now resides with her husband in Otego, New York.

More About the Story

Alana Somers returns home to Millvale on medical furlough to heal from malaria. She loves her work with refugees although it’s emotionally and physically draining. She must fulfill her present contract with the International Aid Society and decide whether to renew her contract for another five years. A nursing degree will open new ways for her to help people, and her growing attraction for Mark Chambers unlocks other new possibilities for the future.

Widower Mark still grieves the death of his daughter fourteen months ago when he is blindsided by unexpected job loss. Reeling from his losses, he questions God’s purpose. God gives him a new calling and new direction, which may include a second chance for marriage and a family of his own.

Will their commitments keep them apart, or does God have something more than friendship in store for them?

Interview with Janell Goodrich York: Meet the Author Monday

Interview with Janell Goodrich YorkInterview with Janell Goodrich York: Meet the Author MondayWelcome to Meet the Author Monday

Yes, yes. I know I’m a day late with my interview. Believe me, I’ve apologized to this week’s author for the oversight. There’s been a lot happening in the Greer house, and I went through the day yesterday without once connecting the dots of it being Monday with the dots of posting a Meet the Author MONDAY.

But Tuesday is a great day for an interview as well. So, today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Janell Goodrich York. Janell’s debut novel, The Day Sarah Ran Away, released on August 19th from Scrivenings Press and is available in paperback and eBook. If you’re a Kindle Unlimited member, it is also available with that subscription.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get to the fun stuff.

Interview with Janell Goodrich York

Janell, since this is the first time some of our readers may have been introduced to you, please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a retired high school guidance counselor. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband forty years. We have three adult daughters, two son-in-laws, five grandkids, and two pups. I love to travel. I’m proud to say we’ve been to all fifty states! Our last state we traveled to was Hawaii this past May. I love the Midwest, but hope to someday live in Florida. Beach trips are my favorite destination.

It sounds like the beach draws you the way the mountains do me. It’s great to have those places in our lives, even if it is only to visit. What prompted you to write The Day Sarah Ran Away?

I missed my kids, so I started journaling my feelings about being an empty nester. Then, I Janell Goodrich York, authorstarted reminiscing on the numerous past conversations I’d had as a high school counselor with the parents of senior students. I found most dads were excited to have their kids out of the house, but most moms were tearful thinking about their kids leaving home. I didn’t truly understand their sadness until it happened to me. It’s a different kind of grief––A letting go of something that has been a joy. As I wrote down my feelings––Sarah and her story began forming in my imagination. At first, the story was turning out like Tom Hanks with his soccer ball friend, Wilson, so I decided she needed interaction with other people. Now, there’s a host of lovable characters in her story.

I’ve experienced the empty nest, but my husband decided we needed a dog before being alone could really sink in. I’d like to try the peace and quiet sometime! You write from a place of faith. Do you have a scripture that guides or inspires you in your writing life?

I have a small standing plaque on my desk given to me when I graduated high school. It reads, “With God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26. That plaque has moved with me from my college dorm, apartment, first home, and my current home now. It’s always been a wonderful reminder, God is with me, guiding me, and nothing is too hard for Him. Not having a background in creative writing, I knew writing a book would be a challenge. So, each morning I would say a prayer before I began writing to quiet my fears and doubts, remembering also Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Another favorite verse of mine.

Those are both wonderful scriptures for authors and everyone else, really. What do you wish you knew about being an author before you became an author?

All the new technology I’ve had to learn on my own to market my book. It’s been a challenge for me. Working at a school district, I had IT people to help navigate new programs. I continue to tell myself, it will be easier with the next book and I pray a lot. lol

What is the biggest blessing you’ve received as an author?

The support and encouragement from my community has been a huge blessing. I have so many friends, family, and acquaintances excited to read my book. I’m pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed by their response.

A supportive community is a gift. Who is the biggest cheerleader in your life?

My husband. He is good about allowing me to read a scene to him and offers great feedback. He’s my initial beta reader. He was so excited when I got my book contract, he told everyone in our community.

If you could go anywhere to write for one month and money wasn’t an issue, where would you go?

I would go to a remote cottage on the beach away from popular destinations. My desk would be in front of a big window overlooking ocean waves kissing white sand beaches.

Nice. Sounds very peaceful and conducive to creative output.

I want to thank Janell for joining me today. And readers, if you enjoyed this interview with Janell Goodrich York, stay with me just a little longer. I’ll share how to connect with Janell, more about her book, and purchase links to get your copy of The Day Sarah Ran Away.

More About The Day Sarah Ran Away

The Day Sarah Ran Away coverA heartfelt tale of discovery and resilience when plans fall apart.

Sarah Goodwin loved her life as a stay-at-home mom, pouring her heart into every moment with her only daughter, Emma. But now, Emma is off at college and rarely visits or answers her calls, leaving Sarah feeling adrift in a sea of routines—no more soccer games, fundraisers, dress shopping, or birthday parties. As each monotonous day blends into the next, Sarah longs for something more.

When Emma announces she’ll be home for the summer to plan her wedding, Sarah is thrilled at the thought of shared dreams, endless to-do lists, and the promise of reconnecting. But her perfect summer quickly unravels when unexpected events send her on a daring journey with new companions—an adventure filled with twists, revelations, and surprises she never saw coming.

As Sarah journeys west, questions loom. What will her husband do when he discovers she’s gone? Where will this journey lead her? And most importantly, what lies ahead for Sarah now?
