I give myself permission to marinate on a character or story ploy for a while. I also give myself a timeframe to stop marinating and start writing about the ideas that I have been jotting down. Sometimes, I have to start working on another part of the project until I feel good about the original portion that I was stumped on.

Most writers will tell you to keep writing even when you are having writer's block. That is great advice. Write about something - profile of your characters, outline your story chapters, develop your plot, etc. I find as I continue to work on my project eventually my creative juices kick in.

It is also important to give yourself realistic timelines to complete your project. Don't pressure yourself to complete a project when you are not able to devote to it properly with research and formatting. Unnecessary pressure will also give you writer's block. Relax and continue to write something.
