But it’s not so much the fictional world that Richard Bach presents; it’s how throughout the story, he encourages an open-minded perspective and permission to create our own limitless world.

Richard created his world and story in which he is a pilot, hopping from field to field, selling rides in his biplane. For three one-dollar bills, the barnstormer promises ten minutes of cooler weather and flying with the birds and angels. When Richard encounters another pilot, Donald Shimoda who is doing the same work, he begins to witness unexplainable phenomena. For example, after flying and barnstorming for a month, there are no bugs on Donald’s windshield, spots of grease on his engine, or hay on the cockpit floor. Plus, he can make a wrench float in mid-air. Don’s explanation: “There are some things you do not know.”

This suspension of facts, knowledge, and belief is what I love most about of world of "Illusions." All of these are challenged when Donald gives Richard the Messiah’s Handbook ~ Reminders for the Advanced Soul. My favorite and still quoted pearls of wisdom include “You teach best what you most need to learn” and “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, there’re yours.”

From the very first pages of notes scribbled on lined paper, stained with mechanic’s fingerprints, to the unbelievable and shocking ending, the story dares and inspires to question reality, let go of beliefs, dive into the unknown, and discover life’s infinite possibilities. When I am in the world of "Illusions," I close my eyes and contemplate every sentence uttered by Donald Shimoda, drink deep of every word in the handbook, and imagine what my own world could be like. The world created by Richard Bach in Illusions is magical, unbelievable, and mysterious, but provides keys to unlock its doors. And somehow the adventure leaves you wondering what is reality and what is an illusion.
