One Big Heart

It’s been said that you ought to “write like a reader.” When it comes to children’s books, I use my son as my muse. We read stories every night , and I am constantly paying attention to what excites him and draws him in. I study which stories he wants to read each night and keeps going back to again and again.

I try to capture what fascinates him in my own writing. My son is almost 5 years old. I think he is a pretty good gauge for what other children in his age bracket will find enthralling. I hope children will enjoy the message of my latest book. At a time when our country is so divided, I felt this was an opportunity to send a message to the most impressionable among us that we ought to be better than that.

People often say that children don’t see color. I don’t believe that. They do see color. They just don’t assign a value to it. Holding on to that ideal is just one way that adults could learn a lot from children.
