George Steiner worked as a geologist, surveyor, teacher and tour guide, on four continents. A prolonged stay with a Bushman family in southern Africa made him reconsider an evolutionary hypothesis that he had drafted in the 1980s. The result was 'Bushman or Buddha,' the author’s debut volume. He was later adopted by a Bedouin tribe of the Negev Desert, where he became involved in the study of petroglyphs and biblical archaeology. This has inspired his second book, 'Smiths and Prophets.' He has recently contributed a chapter to 'Understanding Human Behavior,' an edited volume that focuses on the evolutionary roots of the syndrome-like manifestations that plague contemporary society.
