This tale has always intrigued us with its compelling themes, and we believed it deserved a fresh exploration. Revisiting “Candle” allowed us to reimagine the narrative with advanced graphics, creating an immersive experience that was previously unattainable.
Our story begins with the haunting image of a woman compelled by extraordinary circumstances to undertake a perilous mission. She ventures into a dark power plant where seven people have mysteriously disappeared. With the power out, her only source of light is a Christingle—a simple candle within an orange, with another as a backup in her pocket.
For those unfamiliar, a Christingle is rich in symbolism. The term “Christingle” derives from the German “Christkindl,” meaning “Little Christ Child.” This tradition, established in 1747 by Moravian bishop Johannes de Watteville, uses a candle, foil, toothpicks, and a ribbon to visually explain the significance of Jesus to children.
Our heroine’s journey through the ominous power plant reveals the source of the blackout—an unsettling discovery far beyond a simple fix.
Candle 2Feedback on the episode has been overwhelmingly positive, and we were so inspired by the visuals that we crafted a sequel: “Candle 2.” This continuation delves into the fate of our protagonist when her Christingle finally burns out.
Listeners might have picked up on subtle clues hinting at the unfolding mystery—green lights, a gaping hole, and strange creatures. “Candle 2” promises to tie these elements together in a shocking finale, perfectly befitting Dark Pennine Tales, and rest assured, it doesn’t involve a spaceship!

Our Journey to AI-Enhanced StorytellingOur mission has always been to create engaging stories across multiple media platforms. From our early YouTube videos, which featured spoken word audio paired with either stock footage or our own location shoots, we’ve strived to blend compelling narratives with stunning visuals. If you are interested on how all this started you can check out our early videos here.
The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns put a temporary halt to our production plans. During this time, we explored new ways to create mini-videos to accompany our stories and contemplated restarting our live mystery series—without the long, grueling hours of traditional production (we’re not getting any younger!).

Exploring the Jubokko: A Bloodthirsty Tree in Post-Apocalyptic Tokyo
As I delve into ancient Japanese vampire lore for my series “Nightshade: Army of the Night,” I’ve uncovered fascinating elements that could add a whole new dimension to my vampire world. In the shattered remnants of Tokyo, where the scars of a great war are still fresh, the landscape is haunted by more than just memories of the fallen. Amidst the ruins and desolate streets lurks an ancient and malevolent presence—the Jubokko.
What is a Jubokko?In Japanese folklore, the Jubokko (樹木子) is a mythical tree born from the blood-soaked earth of ancient battlegrounds. At first glance, these trees appear ordinary, blending seamlessly with their surroundings. However, their twisted branches and dark bark hint at a more sinister nature.
Origins and TransformationA tree becomes a Jubokko after absorbing the blood of countless warriors who perished in battle. The blood seeps into the ground, nourishing the tree and transforming it into a vampiric predator. Legends say that the spirits of these fallen warriors might also become trapped within the tree, adding to its malevolent aura.
Characteristics and BehaviorThe Jubokko’s defining trait is its thirst for human blood. It preys on unsuspecting travelers who venture too close. The tree extends its branches like tentacles to snatch and ensnare them. Once it captures its victim, the tree drains their blood, sustaining itself with the nutrients.
Location and Warning SignsIn post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Jubokko trees thrive in areas where fierce battles once raged and countless lives were lost. These trees are often found in the most desolate parts of the city. They stand as eerie sentinels over the ruins. Locals know to avoid these areas, as the stillness and absence of wildlife often signal the presence of a Jubokko.
A Sinister Presence in a Ruined WorldIn my Japanese vampire series set in the ruins of Tokyo, the Jubokko serves as a chilling reminder of the war’s devastating aftermath. These trees not only symbolize the bloodshed and sorrow of the past but also pose a deadly threat to the survivors navigating this new world.
As my characters move through the ruined city, the presence of Jubokko trees adds an extra layer of danger and suspense. This reminds them that in this post-war landscape, even nature has turned against humanity. Beware the Jubokko, for its thirst is never quenched, and its branches are always ready to claim another victim.
ConclusionThe Jubokko is a terrifying addition to the lore of post-apocalyptic Tokyo. It enhances the eerie atmosphere and constant danger faced by the characters in my series. Its sinister presence and insatiable thirst for blood serve as a grim reminder of the horrors that can emerge from the devastation of war. As I continue to explore and expand the world of “Nightshade: Army of the Night,” the Jubokko will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and the challenges my characters must overcome.

The bustling metropolis of Tokyo, once a symbol of modernity and cultural fusion, now lies in ruins after the catastrophic “Eclipse War.” This devastating conflict, ignited by geopolitical tensions, blurred the lines between conventional and biological warfare, leaving Tokyo a ghostly shell of its former self. Mio and Yui: These former self-defense instructors are the muscle of the group. Mio’s strategic combat skills and Yui’s expertise in weaponry ensure that the Nightshade clan is always prepared for confrontation.
The Nightly RitualEvery night, as the sun dips below the horizon, the Nightshade clan rises from their sanctum—a dilapidated boutique hotel. Each member meticulously selects her attire, blending practicality with remnants of their past identities. This nightly ritual is both a preparation for survival and a reclaiming of their humanity.
Navigating the New World OrderPost-war Tokyo is a fragmented world, divided into territories ruled by supernatural entities. The Nightshade clan must navigate this complex political landscape, forming alliances and avoiding conflicts. Under Akari’s leadership, they negotiate with other vampire covens and map out gang territories, ensuring their survival in a city teetering on the edge of chaos.

Nocturne: A biotech company has commercialized synthetic blood, branded as Nocturne, allowing vampires to sustain themselves without harming humans. Suki, with her striking looks and vibrant personality, has become the face of this product, bridging the gap between the vampire and human communities.
Eclipse: A popular discotheque, Eclipse, is a cultural hub for the supernatural. The haunting blend of electronic beats and traditional Japanese instruments creates a surreal ambiance where the Nightshade clan can momentarily forget their eternal curse and revel in the remnants of human decadence.

Army of the Night
We recently joined several Facebook groups to explore current discussions about one of our favorite subjects: vampires. It’s fascinating to see that vampires still capture widespread interest.
Surprisingly, a significant number of people are enamored with the idea of becoming real-life vampires. If vampires ever chose to take over the world, it seems they wouldn’t face much resistance!
Our exploration didn’t stop at discussions; we delved into vampire art to see how these creatures are currently depicted. It turns out that the classic portrayals by Christopher Lee and Bela Lugosi, which I held dear, have become dated. This realization inspired us to create a modern vampire character that could resonate with audiences in 2024.
One challenge we’ve encountered involves AI art’s representation of vampire teeth, which is crucial for authenticity. This detail is particularly important as we develop visuals for “Sticky Valves,” my book featured prominently on this site. Vampires play more than a minor role in the narrative, making their accurate depiction essential.
As we continue to refine our vampire’s design, we invite you to stay tuned and join us on this creative journey. Our goal is not just to update the vampire image but to challenge and expand what modern vampires can represent in today’s culture.

As mentioned earlier, teeth are still an issue and so far we have found that having a Wide Open mouth seems to be the best way to signify some sort of Fang activity going on. This is hardly going to be practical for everyday use and would make vampires easy to spot in the real world. We will have to work on this more before we get to creating Norman or any of the other vampire gang.

Why We Chose a Podcast Format:
Our journey into podcasting was born from a mix of past trials and technological advances. Initially, our podcasting efforts felt like a high-effort, low-reward endeavor. However, the new tools available today have transformed our production process, allowing us to create high-quality episodes much faster than before. Moreover, although we’re not yet at the Audible audiobook level, we’re striving to reach that pinnacle of audio excellence.
The Process of Creating the Podcast:
Each chapter of ‘Sticky Valves’ is meticulously transformed into an episode. As of May 6, 2024, we have released up to Chapter 6. During this process, detailed scripting, voice acting, and careful editing ensure that each episode captures the essence of the written word, maintaining the suspense and horror that our readers love.

Additionally, one of the fun things about doing this, apart from listening to the story again, is that it gives us a chance to reimagine some of the iconic scenes from the book. I remember walking around Uppermill with a camera taking photos of landmarks that we could use in the book and then spending days working with Photoshop to get a half-decent image of what was in my mind.
Its going to be interesting when we move to the battle in the Civic Hall and the snow bound bus under the Viaduct.
