But I'm hoping the enthusiasm and energy that is NaNoWriMo will rub off on me this year, and that I'll manage to get a rough draft of the final installment of the Redclaw Origins series done in November. Look for Bishop's Endgame summer of 2021!(less)

If the problem is because I'm trying to force characters into doing something that's not right for them or the scene, sometimes I have to put the scene on the back burner and work on something else until the solution comes to me.

If the problem is because my creative well is dry, I need to practice self-care and try being creative in different ways that do not entail writing--like posing action figures in scenes and making up stories about them! I'll also get up from the keyboard and take the dogs for a long walk, or put on some music while I do mindless chores. This frees my mind to work play and play is important to creativity.

If the problem is because I'm "not in the mood" or "my muse has disappeared" sometimes the answer is to sit down and bang away at the story until you work through the sticky bit.

All Good Art is Political

The title of this blog post is a quote from Toni Morrison, “All good art is political. There is none that isn’t.” She goes on to point out that Shakespeare and Aeschylus wrote plays poking at kings, and that good art should be beautiful and political at the same time. That she wasn’t interested in art that wasn’t rooted in the world.

There is a meme going around on TikTok these day

"Atmospheric, historically pitch perfect, thriller noir…

What an enjoyable read this is! Johnson has created a historical world that you sink into without any feeling of falsity or contrivance. There’s no nod-wink, let-me-slip-in-a-bit-of Bertie-Wooste" Read more of this review »

Henry David Thoreau
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.”
