I grew up on a farm in northeast Iowa, the sixth of seven children born to Frank and Jackie (Wessels) Spielbauer.

Like my brothers and sisters, I played sports. Unlike them, I also had a strong interest in fantasy books, mainly The Lord of the Rings and the Xanth series. Love them!

I coached college basketball and am a college athletic director, so also writing historical fiction and fantasy is a strange combo. I developed a saying that it's only weird until it's not. I came with that when my first book came out, a fantasy book. What would people think? It was quite nerve-racking. The first few minutes after I made the announcement on Facebook, people freaked!
