Happy 90th Birthday, Susan Cooper!
Yes, today, 23rd May 2025, is the 90th birthday of my favourite author of all time, Susan Cooper.
I say of all time – at least since my eleventh year, when I first discovered her Dark is Rising sequence – or rather, the first four books of it. (See below…) They are books I return to year after year to reread – especially The Dark is Rising itself, which, along with very many people around the world, I read almost every Christmas season – trying to read the relevant chapters for each day from its opening on Midwinter’s Eve, to its climax on Twelfth Night (and, to be honest, rarely managing it accurately… But you can read all about the attempt here and here).
The paperback edition I bought with my first pay packet
The hardback edition I first borrowed from the libraryI loved the sequence from the moment I first found them in our local library. In those days, during school holidays I’d walk through the park to the library as often as I could, borrow the permitted three books, read them non-stop if my parents didn’t stop me and make me do something different for a change – then return to the library to pick up the next batch. I suspect I read the first four books in the sequence in couple of days, then returned to ask the librarian why the fifth book – Silver on the Tree – wasn’t on the shelf waiting for me to take it out.
Imagine my devastation when I was told it wouldn’t be published until at least the next year! I had a whole twelve months to wait to find out what happened to Will, Jane, Stephen, Barney and Bran… particularly traumatic given the events during the fourth book, The Grey King.

Only one other time in my childhood can I remember such a trauma (I had a very lucky and sheltered childhood) – at the end of The Empire Strikes Back when discovering I had three whole years to wait until the third film in the Star Wars trilogy would reveal what happened to Han Solo – and all the other characters of course. Young people today don’t know they’re born! Being able to stream whole TV series and sequences of films and binge watch them over a weekend!
If I sound like a rather aged person, I guess that’s because I am – I’ll be celebrating a big birthday of my own next month (not as big as Susan’s, but you can work it out yourself if you do the maths…) But that will come as no surprise to anyone who’s read my timeslip novel, Time out of Time – set in the long hot summer of 1976 (there – another clue!) And the first draft of that book included a heartfelt homage to Ms Cooper.
During the book, Allie often visits the local library to discover more about the history of her new/ancient house – and while there, she checks out various novels from the children’s section too. On her first visit, they include Over Sea Under Stone, the first in the Dark is Rising sequence, an Arthurian-themed adventure set in Cornwall. It’s reading an early chapter of this book while soaking in a shallow bath (all that was allowed during the UK drought) that gives Allie the idea that there might be something – a room? a staircase? – lurking behind the bricked up doorway in her bedroom.

All the other books were mentioned in sequence – from a comparison of the frozen Christmas of The Dark is Rising with the blazing summer Allie’s experiencing, to that traumatic moment when she asks her friendly librarian for Silver on the Tree only to be told it’s not yet been published.
Ultimately I had to cut all these references from the final version of Time out of Time owing to the length of the book – even at its current 92,000 words it’s viewed as rather long for the age group it’s aimed at. At it’s original 120,000 words it would have been far too long – only such luminaries as J.K. Rowling can get away with books of that length. For your information, my references to that author were also lost in the edit – where waiting an age for Silver on the Tree was likened to the waits a later generation had to endure between publication of the later Harry Potter books. (If you’ve read the later chapters of Time out of Time you’ll understand how a girl from 1976 can discover anything about a series of books published from the mid-1990s to the 2000s…)

That hellish wait to wrap up my favourite book series was what influenced me not to leave readers waiting longer than I had to between publication of my own Order of the White Boar and The King’s Man, and three years later, books 3 and 4 – King in Waiting and Sons of York. I knew how difficult it is for young readers (or perhaps those of any age) if they’re desperate to know what happens next. (Apologies here to anyone who’s waiting for the next book(s) in the sequence… in my defence, Books 1 and 2 formed a single story arc, and the same for Books 3 and 4 – each two-book story hopefully ends in a satisfactory way – although each time I hoped readers would want to move on to the next. When Sons of York ended, I wasn’t sure anyone – least of all me – would want to move on with the situation as it then stood for Matt and his friends … Since then, I’ve discovered readers (and I) do want to know more about what happened to them in the coming years. So, as they say, watch this space…)
Some readers have said they see the influence of Susan Cooper in my writing – I can’t say I’m surprised. Although The Dark is Rising, a fantasy book, is my favourite of hers, I’ve also loved her others, and two in particular – King of Shadows and Victory – are themselves timeslip books steeped in history and requiring meticulous historical research. A third, Ghost Hawk, her most recent full-length novel and sadly often overlooked, is an exquisite historical novel told in the first person by a Native American boy during the fraught period when their lands were being colonized by Europeans. These are nothing like any of my own books and I couldn’t hope to create anything of such high quality – but … is there some influence? Let me know if you see any.

With my latest book, Tower of Shadows, publishing tomorrow, I guess there’ll be another opportunity to ponder this question. Perhaps some will pounce on the presence of rooks at one or two points in the book – used by Susan as birds of the Dark in The Dark is Rising. Mine have no such pretensions – but yes, I can’t deny I inserted them not just as a result of location research (there is currently a rookery in the trees around the Tower that was the inspiration for Coultry Tower, but would I have included it without the ‘hoarse, shrieking flurry rushing down dark out of the sky … in a dreadful blur of unreality’? Maybe not.). Perhaps my own attempt to focus on the celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hogmanay in Tower of Shadows might be seen as influence. What else might a keen eye spot?
Whatever Susan Cooper’s influence on my own work has been, I know it’s been huge on many other authors – the aforementioned J.K. Rowling among them. She is beloved of many generation of readers too – something I witnessed two years ago in the wide range of ages amongst the audience at a British Library interview with Susan I was lucky enough to attend. And I know many thousands of people around the globe will join with me in wishing Susan a very Happy 90th Birthday – and very, very many happy returns of the day.

Cover reveal for ‘Tower of Shadows’!
*COVER REVEAL*
I’m delighted at last to reveal the fantastic cover for my new release – Tower of Shadows
As with all my previous books, I’m thrilled that Olly Bennett from MoreVisual has come up with a fabulous design – and I do hope you like it too
It’s a little different from the covers of the Order of the White Boar sequence – but then so is the book itself rather different
Though steeped in history, as all my previous books have been, this one is my first to be set primarily in the present day, and I hope the cover reflects that.
So please meet Drew and Mairi – and Bilbo!

You’ll be able to meet them properly – and explore the ‘Tower of Shadows’ with them too – on 24th May when the ebook and paperback will be available to buy, or to read on Kindle Unlimited for free. I’ll announce the pre-order for the ebook just as soon as it’s available.
Save the day!

Tower of Shadows – coming soon!
No matter how often it happens, I love this stage of publishing!
When the story is ready to go, and it’s time for the cover to be designed. It’s always exciting to be the first to see a new design
And thanks to my regular designer Olly at MoreVisual I’ve a treat in store for upcoming release Tower of Shadows
With publication date to be confirmed (likely in early May), the design needs a few tweaks before the reveal a week or two before then. But suffice to say this beauty

will make an appearance – in a slightly disguised form anyway.

Do you know the place? It’s the architectural star of Tower of Shadows – although I’ll admit in fictionalized form and sporting a pseudonym.
As for the human stars – if you’ve read my previous posts about Tower of Shadows, you’ll know they’re named Drew and Mairi. I hope to be able to introduce them to you soon too.

FREE books to commemorate the reburial of King Richard III
Once again a big anniversary rolls round – this time it’s ten years since the reburial of King Richard III in Leicester Cathedral with the pomp and ceremony he was denied 530 years before. A whole decade! Where has it gone?

Well, in my case, I guess it’s easy to spot – albeit still unbelievable that it’s been so long! Most of the past ten years I’ve been writing and publishing novels about King Richard and his legacy – plus editing three anthologies. And to celebrate this amazing anniversary, I’m making the first of my books completely FREE to download.
Yes, you read that right. For the next five days, The Order of the White Boar ebook will be free to all and any who wish to add it to their ereader. And for the coming week, all my other books will be heavily discounted to. So now’s the time to pick up a bargain – or several!

As you may well know, The Order of the White Boar is the first of four novels telling King Richard’s story through the eyes and adventures of a young boy, Matthew Wansford, and his friends in the service of, first Duke, then King Richard, and later … well, that would be telling. While aimed at children aged 10 upwards, the books have been enjoyed also by readers of all ages – many seeing them as a good introduction to the complex period of the Wars of the Roses, and of course how and why Richard became king.
While The Order is free to download, each of the sequels – The King’s Man, King in Waiting and Sons of York – will cost from just 99p/99c over the next few days. As the ebooks are on an Amazon ‘countdown deal’, the sooner you buy them, the cheaper they’ll be.

Not only that, but the ‘omnibus editions’ of the books (the 2-in-1 volumes) are also on a similar deal (maybe you prefer their covers? See The Order of the White Boar, Books 1 and 2, and King in Waiting, Books 3 and 4). Now’s your chance to catch up with all the sequence, whichever of the books you may have read so far – and also to nudge your friends and family into downloading them. It may be your way to make Ricardians of them all!

And to round things off – have you read my standalone timeslip book, Time out of Time? While not about King Richard (though the eagle-eyed will spot he does make a sort of appearance), it’s been enjoyed by many of my readers. One even said in a review, ‘I think this might be my favourite novel by this author yet’, while another called it ‘The best book I’ve read in a very long time!’ Why not give it a go? What’s there to lose at only 99p/99c?!

Time out of Time follows the adventures of young Allie Turner when she discovers a doorway back into the history of the ancient house her parents are renovating. Set during the long hot summer of 1976, it appeals both to children aged 10+ and to many adults who may remember that time well.
Just a reminder – The Order of the White Boar will be FREE for the next five days, while all the other ebooks will be from just 99p/99c for the next seven days. Bargains not to be missed!
And if you’d prefer a paperback of any of the books (perhaps to complement the e-version on your kindle), do message me for prices. I’m happy to send signed copies (and/or signed bookplates) anywhere in the world.

Don’t forget to sign up to this blog and follow me on social media to hear news of my forthcoming books. In the next few weeks, I’ll be revealing the cover and publication date of new standalone title Tower of Shadows. Join Drew and Mairi for ghostly adventures in the shadow of mysterious Coultry Tower. Be sure to look out for it!

Happy reading! And, as ever, loyalty binds us

The abominable tale of pirating by one of the world’s richest men… and an offer!
You may have heard about the major scandal currently rocking the publishing world. That Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has pirated millions of copyrighted books to use to train its AI.
The full details can be found here: The Atlantic
To my surprise (although maybe, given the numbers involved, I shouldn’t have been surprised), two of my books were among those pirated by Meta for this purpose, with no attempt to ask my permission or respect my copyright. These are the two:

Maybe I should be flattered? Maybe I should take the positive that at least Meta’s AI will have learned from my books that King Richard III was a good and just king, much maligned over the centuries, and that the so-called Princes in the Tower may well have survived into the reign of Henry Tudor.
But really the only reaction is to be horrified and disgusted that many years of work by so many creative people have been stolen from them to be used for the commercial gain of a conglomerate run by a person who’s already a multibillionaire.
I, along with likely thousands, or even millions of other authors will be campaigning for redress of this situation, and for our governments to pass legislation to protect our copyright from such infringements in the future.
In the meantime, don’t be like Zuckerberg! Get a legitimate bargain instead.
Both these books – King in Waiting and Sons of York – will be on a countdown discount deal with Amazon from 26 May to commemorate King Richard’s reinterment in Leicester 10 years ago
All my other ebooks (including the omnibus editions) will similarly be hugely discounted for a week – except for ‘The Order of the White Boar’, which will be FREE to download worldwide for five days from the anniversary!
Don’t miss out! Make sure you tell any friends or family who may be interested – perhaps you’ll set them on the road to becoming a Ricardian if they’re not already!

Oh, and don’t forget to watch out over the next few weeks for details of my upcoming new release – Tower of Shadows!

Ten years ago today… the start of King Richard’s final journey
It’s difficult to believe that it’s almost ten years since good King Richard was finally laid to rest in a known tomb after being lost for five hundred years.
Today, as notified in this post by the Richard III Society, is the tenth anniversary of of the day when Richard’s remains were placed in their coffin prior to his lying in state in Leicester Cathedral and the formal reburial ceremony on 26 March.

There will be various anniversary events taking place, especially in Leicester and at Bosworth Battlefield (details can be found on their websites).
To commemorate the tenth anniversary of this landmark moment (and the amazing efforts that finally achieved it), I’ll be making some very special offers. Watch this space nearer the time of the actual anniversary for more details.
And for anyone who’s interested in podcasts, you might find a new one from the Society of interest. Details can be found in this post or the podcast can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/show/4izt7JLe8y8R1ZSutrxW9q…

12 years ago today… *that* press conference!
I’ve blogged several times in the past about *that* press conference on this day in 2013, when it was announced that the grave of King Richard III had been found ‘beyond reasonable doubt. Today is the twelfth anniversary of that momentous day (and of the ‘birth’ of Matthew Wansford, my lead character in the ‘Order of the White Boar‘ sequence) and to commemorate it I’ve brought together a couple of my blogs from those years (links here and here). The first is from the seventh anniversary, the second from the tenth. Both mention special offers which aren’t currently available, but this is a heads up to watch out for a very special offer coming in the next few weeks.
Because another momentous anniversary is looming. In just seven weeks it will be a whole decade since King Richard was reinterred. Where has the time gone?
The Looking for Richard Project team at the Greyfriars dig, August 2012. From left to right: David Johnson, Wendy Johnson, Philippa Langley, John Ashdown Hill (not pictured: Annette Carson). Photo copyright: Philippa LangleyAs my books are aimed at readers aged 10+, very many of them now weren’t even born when King Richard was rediscovered or reburied. But when I speak to them at events, they’re all fascinated by his story – both the story of his life and the story of his rediscovery. So if you have a young (or indeed, not so young!) reader in your life who would be interested in reading more, watch out for the upcoming special offer.
In the meantime, please be sure to subscribe to this blog to ensure you receive emails when I post here – either about special offers or of course my forthcoming books. The next, titled Shadows of the Past, will be published in the spring. As a subscriber to the blog, you’ll be the first to hear all about it!

Online launch party for ‘A Spirited and Most Courageous Prince’ – Sunday 20 October
What will you be doing this coming Sunday afternoon between 3 and 6 pm (British Summer Time)?
Hopefully you’ll be joining me and several other Ricardian authors as we celebrate the launch of our new charity anthology, A Spirited and Most Courageous Prince.

Following publication on King Richard’s birthday on 2nd October, my fellow authors and I reckoned it was time to get together (virtually this time, of course) to launch the book to our friends and readers on Facebook.
The launch ‘party’ can be found at the following link:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1481849865798321/
Simply go to the page and click on ‘going’ or ‘interested’, and Facebook will alert you in good time to the start of the event.
I’ll be joined by Bridget Beauchamp, Wendy Johnson, Joanne Larner, Nancy Northcott, Janet Reedman and Jennifer Wilson to chat about King Richard, the inspiration for our stories in the collection, our other work, and – well, anything and everything that you might want us to! Do come along and ask us plenty of questions – and look out for competitions and giveaways!
And meanwhile, don’t forget A Spirited and Most Courageous Prince can be bought as an ebook, paperback, or read for free on Kindle Unlimited. Best of all, it’ll make a perfect stocking filler for any family or friends with an interest in King Richard or historical fiction generally.

Alex Marchant is author of two books telling the story of the real King Richard III for children aged 10+, The Order of the White Boar and The King’s Man, and a third in the sequence, King in Waiting, which continues the adventures of the young members of the Order in the following years. A fourth book, Sons of York, was published in June 2022.
Alex is also editor of Grant Me the Carving of My Name and Right Trusty and Well Beloved…, two anthologies of short fiction inspired by King Richard, sold in support of Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK), with a third coming in autumn 2024: A Spirited and Most Courageous Prince.
Alex has also published a standalone timeslip novel for readers aged 10+, Time out of Time, relating the adventures of Allie Turner through a doorway into history found under layers of old wallpaper at ancient Priory Farm.
