The best location is not my bed and pillow but my garden. Gardening not only cleanses my mind but especially brings to mind new writing solutions and ideas. Myself, I swear by fruits and vegetables, herbs and the blue sky. Have you noticed how the basilicum leans toward the eggplants, almost hugging them?(less)

“She knows he is there now, hedgehogged in terror. Like someone whose arm has been amputated, so, since they cut the umbilical cord, she keeps feeling him swimming and kicking in the placenta of the world, which as always is filled with gold fish and singing dolphins but also alligators and leeches and all sorts of mollusks. And people who in the blink of an eye turn into telescreens.”

“A garden is never finished. In that sense it is like the human world and all human undertakings.”
Karel Čapek, Gardener's Year

“I find that a real gardener is not a man who cultivates flowers; he is a man who cultivates the soil. He is a creature who digs himself into the earth and leaves the sight of what is on it to us gaping good-for-nothings. He lives buried in the ground. He builds his monument in a heap of compost. If he came into the Garden of Eden, he would sniff excitedly and say: "Good Lord, what humus!”
Karel Čapek, Gardener's Year

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
Benjamin Franklin, Memoirs of the life & writings of Benjamin Franklin

“The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
