The Owl House: Eda Clawthorne and Chronic Autoimmune Disease

Eda Clawthorne | Owl house, Eda the owl lady, The owl house

I love The Owl House for many reasons and that list of reasons seems to grow with each episode. Now, after episode 4 of season 2, it’s clear that Eda’s beast curse is a metaphor for chronic autoimmune disease–or chronic illness in general.

I wasn’t expecting this reading of her character or story, but episode 4 strongly positions it this way. Every other character I’ve seen in fiction dealing with a “beast within” plot doesn’t have their experience framed in this way.

Since I’m a year ...

When the Cicadas Came Last Time

Cicada, Insect, Bug, Nature

This is my second go around with the 17-year cicadas. With such a long natural cycle, I can’t help but think back to where and who I was last time they came.

I was 13 last time, just about to finish middle school, so in a sense, there they were at the end of one cycle in my life and the beginning of another. Social media was almost non-existent. Digital cable was the hottest way to watch TV. You had to dig through pages and pages of Google to find a good website to watch any obscure anime...

I Started a YouTube Channel

I’m now on YouTube! In 2020, I got really into YouTube, especially booktube and authortube, so I decided to give it a shot. Here are my first two videos.

I knew my AMV editing skills would come in handy one day!

Dear White Diaspora Puerto Ricans…

Twice within barely a week, I’ve caught wind of white Puerto Ricans whipping out Puerto Rican identity and/or diaspora experience as a shield against criticisms of racism or criticism in general. The first instance infuriated me and the second is meme bait, but both have provided a catalyst for some issues I’ve been thinking about for a long time, especially since I share identities with and have the same amount of privilege as the people who instigated these incidents.

The first is Soho Kare...

2020 Reading Wrap-Up: Everything I Read This Year

2020 was certainly a year, but one of my highlights is that I finally started taking my reading more seriously and became more open to different formats of reading because being an author who isn’t reading voraciously is kind of embarrassing.

I had just gotten into audiobooks at the very beginning of this year and then the pandemic hit and then I had personal stuff happen. Audiobooks became the primary reason why I drastically increased my reading despite all of that.

I still read print an...

At long last, we have reached the thrilling conclusion of my 10-year-old selfs magnum opus. Id like to thank the academy, Clippy from Microsoft Word, and Powerpoint.

Chapter 10

The next two weeks passed by surprisingly fast. We went back to school still blue but no one would notice.

Absolutely no one. Its fine.

We came back on the second Friday of January, which was very lucky, because we wouldnt miss the R.A.C. The R.A.C stands for Riverside Activity Center. Theres music in the cafeteria...

Is Happiest Season a Good Story?

Queerly Not Straight: 'Happiest Season' Spoiler-Free Review | Fangirlish

The Internet has been abuzz with discourse ever since Happiest Season dropped on Hulu, a lot of it heated and most of it critical. As the hours go by, the takes get wilder. I dont usually chime in on #discourse because Im often late to the game or just havent seen or read The Thing That Everyone Is Talking About™.

But this time, I watched The Thing™ right when it came out, before the discourse, and ever since Ive been reading both sides. I really enjoyed this movie and at the same time, it...
