If I don't know what to write I still spend that time thinking about what should happen in the story next. I usually don't start writing until I have a good idea of the story arc. I don't have to think about where the story is going, I just have to figure out how to get from my last sentence closer to the end of the story. Sometimes the story unfolds in ways I didn't plan. Sometimes characters I really like have to die.

The only major block I can think of was when I was writing Phoenician Dilemma. It was a novel about how history would have change if Carthage had won the punic wars. I was writing both in "modern times" and in the times when the wars were occurring. The story got too confusing and seemed very forced. In the end I abandoned the story. I might return to it someday.(less)
