The story's protagonist is Aaron Lortz, a Wall Street banker with a malignant tumor, a diagnosis that triggers clashes between Aaron and demons at the root of a peculiar anxiety that has plagued him since early childhood. Aaron frets over joy’s disappearance the instant of its arrival.
Frightening and angering his family, Aaron refuses chemotherapy and opts, instead, to take swims in the frigid Atlantic and to cycle late nights throughout the New York boroughs where he encounters talking wolves, his dead father, dead brother, and junkies.
Aaron also travels Israel, Brazil, and the Amazon River. His Israeli girlfriend, an imprisoned childhood friend, a 100-year-old former Coney Island strongman, and Aaron’s schizophrenic grandfather all help Aaron navigate his tumultuous search for serenity. Before his time unwinds, will he experience life free from his crippling anxiety or will his cancer devour him before he can wrap his body in time?
