When he gets to the other side of the room, I stare at him, and his eyes lock on mine. I raise my chin and straighten my back. He thinks he can scare me with that handsome but cruel snarl? He has no idea who he is dealing with. Slowly, like a panther going for the kill, he walks back over to me. The room seems to watch with bated breath. I swallow hard as we stand toe-to-toe, his shiny loafers to my open-toe platform sandals. He is easily twice my size. I try to hold my breath, not wanting to take him in. He smells so good, it’s disgusting.
His lip twitches. “So, you’re the one, eh?”
“Yes. I’m the stuck up bitch who plays the cello. Isn’t that what you called me?” I smile widely, and his eyes turn a deep, midnight blue.
Under his breath he tells me, “They must have really threatened you good to get you here today. I pegged you for many things when we met, and it seems I was right on all accounts.” He looks me up and down like I’m scum.
I finish the champagne, needing all the strength I can get. “The threat of death and money. That’s what it took to get me here. But if I knew it was you, no money in the world would have brought me here.”Break On Through
