Play Ball!
Today the Tri-City Valley Cats open their 2018 season. Affiliated with the Houston Astros, they've been in Troy, NY, for 17 years, and I love going to minor league baseball games. This team was in part the inspiration for the story in my book, Empty Seats.
When I decided to write, I remembered going onto the field to sing The National Anthem at several games, looking into the dugout and seeing the faces of the young baseball players, hopeful that, one day, they'd make it into Major League Baseball. Since that time, several who have sat in that dugout--Jose Altuve, George Springer, Dallas Keuchel, Ben Zobrist, and more--have made it to the big leagues.
It's hard work. Not many actually do see their names on a Major League roster. But at one time, they head all been stars in their hometowns. The face challenges on and off the baseball diamond, and some are insurmountable.
I love baseball, and have since 1956. For some reason, this game has cast its spell on me. I cannot wait to head to the Valley Cats stadium, known locally as The Joe, to see the latest group of enthusiastic young ballplayers as they enter the wonderful world of minor league ball.
If you'd like to get a glimpse of what the journey might have been like in 1972, you might like to read my book. You can find more information here: https://www.wandafischer.com/buy-my-book or here on Goodreads.
