However, I spent a lot of time in Elmhurst over the years, and not just on the ambulance. Lots of cousins there plus a grandma and I worked in my Dad's gas station [at the corner of 57th and Van Horn] pumping gas starting at age 13. I actually tried many times to write this book over the years, but never hit on a style I liked until a few years ago. I had a list of the stories almost from the beginning -- it was the telling that wasn't there. One evening a few years ago I stayed up to watch a certain movie* and when it was over, the next day, I knew how I would write the book. *More in this article:
