I was trying to come up with a 1-to-10 gruesome scale for FRACTURED TIDE, but I can't really settle on a number. I think it depends on your perspective and your personal tolerance for gore. The monster attack scene has some gross moments, but I intentionally kept a lot of the gore off screen to make the creep factor go up, rather than go for pure shock. You'll also get some minor gore once our main character gets to the island, but those moments aren't over-the-top either, as often what the main character sees on the island is so horrifying to her that she feels the need to look away as soon as she gets a glimpse.

I absolutely hope you buy and read FRACTURED TIDE, but I also love giving recommendations. For Young Adult horror, I really like Danielle Vega, and SURVIVE THE NIGHT has a pretty decent amount of gore. I also loved Kate Alice Marshall's RULES FOR VANISHING, which has a super cool SILENT HILL quality to it (the film from 2006). My other suggestion would be to go to the Horror Writers Association website (horror.org) and click on the Bram Stoker Award link. There you'll find the short-listed novels for the Bram Stoker award; the young adult award this year went to OWARE MOSAIC by Nzondi. I haven't read it yet, but it's on my TBR list for sure. Kate Alice Marshall's book was shortlisted there as well. I love to find new authors by poking around on the HWA site, so you should definitely check it out! (less)

“DEAD BODIES DON’T COOPERATE”
Leslie Lutz, Fractured Tide

“You told me once the mind is an ocean, and most of us live on the surface. But the currents beneath, that’s what moves everything around. The currents make the boats shift position in the night, pushing the waves against the shore just so.”
Leslie Lutz , Fractured Tide
