BOOK SIGNING, ABILENE TEXAS

Every one of my book signings are special to me, whether eight people come or eighty. After all, each in turn gives me the opportunity to share some time with those who are instrumental in whatever success I have had in this writing gig.

That would be you, my readers.

But every now and then I attend an event that I know will stick with me the remainder of my years. It brings to mind the old adage of “when the world was young and men were bold.”

On this day I was graced with the presence of several such men, men that are either mentioned in my latest book ‘Black And White: Tales of the Texas Highway Patrol,’ or at least cut from the very same whole, precious cloth.

They are the men who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me come what may, who never let me down for a second, and who have both honored and humbled me beyond measure with one single word: “Brother.”

And on this day, I was in their presence again.

Some came and went before I could get a camera lens on them. A few shared words, a handshake, an inscription on the first page and they were gone.

Yet their coming continues to linger amid gratefulness in my mind.

Others stayed for the entire program.

This essay is dedicated to them all.

God speed, Brothers.
