Mark Groenen (1989) is a history and Dutch language teacher from Veldhoven, the Netherlands.
In his works he ventures into the surreal, the fantastic, and the horrific. While he is on the fence about the term, his work has been described as "grimdark magical realism". Even if it isn't 100% accurate, it at least sounds cool as hell.

The letter was specifically written for my son, whose name and adress were written down on the envelope. I did not know the kid on whose behalve the party was held, nor had I ever spoken or met his parents. It was also the child's fourth birthday party; so he was way older than my one year old. I can't fathom the boys having anything in common.

In the end we decided to not go to the party of this mystery kid. There was no phone number to call, so we could not tell the parents we were not joining them.

The only place where my son could have met this Baris, was at daycare. At daycare, however, I never heard of a boy named Baris, nor did any adults ever ask me why we didn't come to the party.

I'm all for partying, but this struck me as odd. It does make for a great suspense thriller...

Who knows, maybe one day I will write "Baris' party".(less)

“... zoals het terugtrekkende tij dat wat verhuld is onder water en zand blootlegt, zo keert mijn herinnering terug aan de bewoners van de plek in het helmgras.”
